Fresh off of a historic docuseries in The Last Dance, ESPN has now lined up another project, this time with Tom Brady. The nine-episode series will be titled The Man in the Arena: Tom Brady, and look from Brady’s perspective at the six NFL titles and three Super Bowl defeats he was a part of. The series will be produced by ESPN, 199 Productions (Brady’s production company) and Gotham Chopra of Religion of Sports. “Through the series, we’re defining the key moments and challenges that were seemingly insurmountable, but through hard work and perseverance, became career-defining triumphs, in both victory and defeat,” Brady said, per ESPN.

PROGRAMMING

NASCAR continues to roll with Wednesday’s Toyota 500 on FS1 (the first NASCAR Cup race on a Wednesday since July 4, 1984) drew an average of 2,087,000 viewers to rank as the most-watched telecast on the network since the Busch Clash at Daytona. NASCAR Race Hub at 5p leading directly into the Cup window posted 257,000 viewers, up 154% compared to its Wednesday average.

A cancellation of the 2020 college football season would cost $4 billion to top-tier schools with ESPN reporting the 65 Power 5 schools would collectively lose more than $4 billion in football revenues, with at least $1.2 billion of that due to lost ticket revenue, according to its reported analysis. “Each Power 5 school would see at least an average loss of $62 million in football revenue, including at least $18.6 million in football ticket sales.”

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum unveiled plans to stage a five-fight card on June 9 at the MGM Grand, marking the the first of a series of fights over the next two months that will take place at the Las Vegas resort, including a second fight card will be held two nights later. ESPN will carry both cards, and offer twice weekly shows at the hotel through June and July. No fans will be allowed at the venue, with everyone involved at the site tested at least twice during fight week

The Professional Bowlers Association returns to FOX on Saturday at 7p with the first-ever PBA Strike Derby. Peyton Manning returns to host a second season of docuseries Peyton’s Places this fall on ESPN+. The 15-episode season will again feature Peyton exploring football’s history and cultural impact through conversations with players, coaches and other key figures. The season is expected to debut Thanksgiving weekend with two new episodes per week, culminating Super Bowl weekend in February 2021.

With the 2019-20 TV season in the books, NBC’s Sunday Night Football finished as primetime’s top TV show in all key metrics for the ninth consecutive year, per official live plus same day data provided by Nielsen. Sunday Night Football also ranked as the top show in the 18-49 demographic for the 10th consecutive TV season. The franchise posted a Total Audience Delivery average of 20.5 million viewers in 2019 – up 5% from the prior season (19.6 million) and a 12% increase over 2017 (18.4 million),

GOLF Channel will celebrate college golf and the NCAA Women’s and Men’s Golf National Championships – originally scheduled to take place the next two weeks at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale – with enhanced encore tournament programming, the premiere of a new original series, GOLF on Campus, as well as interviews with coaches and players throughout the network’s linear and digital platforms. GOLF on Campus presented by Golf Pride MCC Teams will launch on GOLF Channel’s YouTube on Monday, with a half-hour special premiering on GOLF Channel Wednesday at 2:30p and 7:30p.

Amazon picked up additional rights to carry this weekend’s Bundesliga matches of Hertha BSC Berlin vs Union Berlin and FC Schalke 04 vs FC Augsburg in Germany and Austria. “We are delighted to extend our Bundesliga offering for Prime members in Germany and Austria at no additional cost to their membership”, says Alex Green, Managing Director Sport at Prime Video. “It is great that Prime members will be able to see the capital derby Hertha BSC vs Union Berlin as well as FC Schalke 04 vs FC Augsburg this weekend.”

Stateside, June 5 sees Amazon Prime Video debut El Presidente, a new Amazon International Original series inspired by the real-life characters and events behind the 2015 “FIFA Gate” corruption scandal and starring Karla Souza.

The Premier Lacrosse League is launching Virtual Senior Day presented by Chipotle, a social initiative that recognizes high school seniors who missed out on their final season of lacrosse due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the partnership, the PLL and Chipotle are teaming up and sending video messages from the game’s top stars to high school seniors who are playing for their respective alma matters. The New Orleans Saints confirmed that their naming rights agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the Superdome will not be renewed after it expires next year. The team told told Forbes that the team is seeking a new partner that will not only lend its name to the legendary venue.

With sports returning in part this past weekend, data from ISpot and Inscape offered viewership insights, noting that the most popular live sports that were on TV this weekend by share of all TVs, auto racing (NASCAR) was tops (10.01%), followed by golf (7.31%), Saturday soccer (1.44%) and Sunday soccer (1.30%).

PUBG Mobile Pro League South Asia signed on Mountain Dew as part of its relaunch efforts with play slated to resume today following a suspension of play. The deal sees Mountain Dew serve as a “platinum sponsor” of the league, with the Mountain Dew logo prominently featuring on newly-released PMPL South Asia branding.

New sports fan data from Kantar revealed that while 26% of sports fans indicate that they’ll go to sporting events as soon as it’s allowed, two-thirds of sports fans say they’ll only do it if they’re sure it’s safe (45%) – or won’t go until a COVID-19 vaccine is developed (20%). An additional 8% of sports fans say they won’t go to sporting events anymore. That said, 62% of sports fans agreed that “No matter what the product is, I will pay more if I know it’s clean and sanitized” (vs. 53% of non-sports fans). 68% of sports fans believe it’s somewhat/very likely in five years that “Facemasks will be a normal part of public life in America”

The broadcast world paid respects to pioneer Phyllis George who passed late last week. She was 70. Of the who’s who of voices and executives who heaped praise on George was longtime broadcaster Tim Brando who worked with Phyllis at CBS. He said:
“She was a Beauty Queen a Miss America (and what’s really wrong with that?) But more serious female journalists were critical of her and didn’t like her for it. Even worse, there were men in television who cringed over her invading their space in sports. She dealt with petty jealousies with dignity and grace.”
George joined The NFL Today in 1975. Her studiomates included Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek.

LeBron JamesThe Decision on ESPN in 2010 averaged 9.9 million viewers. Michael Jordan’s The Last Dance averaged 5.6 million viewers over five weeks. But ESPN’s polling of viewers after the docuseries ended Sunday night, clearly and overwhelmingly demonstrated that fans consider Michael the better player.
