IN THE NEWS
Disney Advertising Sales is presenting a Virtual Roadshow in place of an upfront event. A 30-minute video, including Disney talent, execs and video compilations, will be customized for each agency and their holding company in presentations running May 26-June 1. “In addition to showcasing our brands, our reach and our premium capabilities, we also plan to bring back some Disney traditions the market has come to look forward to from our event,” teased the company.
ViacomCBS’ virtual upfront will take place May 18-19, as a series of short visual presentations. Monday, May 18 will cover cable networks, Pluto TV, ad solutions and digital platforms. The next day will showcase CBS’s fall lineup, and programming on CBS All Access, CBS Sports and CBS News. “Our newly integrated team across ViacomCBS has come together even more quickly than I could have expected despite the pressure of extenuating circumstances,” wrote Jo Ann Ross, President and Chief Advertising Revenue Officer of Domestic Ad Sales, in a letter to clients and agencies. “This incredible progress gives me optimism for the days ahead.”
Ahead of its upfront showcase, CBS announced it is bringing back 23 series – or 80% of its lineup – for the 2020-21 season, including freshmen All Rise, Bob Hearts Abishola, Evil, FBI: Most Wanted and The Unicorn. “Thanks to these exceptional shows, we’re going to win the current season by 1 million viewers,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “Next year, we’ll have these strong returning series as our foundation…and Super Bowl LV too. It’s a well-balanced lineup across Entertainment, News and Sports that will put us in an incredibly stable position for 2020-2021.”
Comcast took a look at how the coronavirus lockdown is impacting TV habits and found it is blurring weekday and weekend viewing habits. While typically, customers watch far more programming on the weekends, Monday has become a more popular viewing day than Saturday. There’s also an upswing of 40% in viewing during late night hours, and a 6% decrease between 6-8a. And Comcast found a big uptick in VOD usage (50%), and double-digit growth for discovery-related commands like “what to watch” and “surprise me,” suggesting viewers are seeking new shows.
NBC Sports will televise lacrosse tournament PLL Championship Series Powered by Ticketmaster, from July 25-August 9. There will be no fans in attendance, and players, coaches and officials will be quarantined during the event. Games will air live on NBC, NBC Sports Network or NBC Sports Gold, as well as stream on NBCSports.com and the NBS Sports app. The league played its first season last year.
As marketing leaders face extreme advertising budget pressures, Kantar and Roku’s whitepaper, “Exposure Frequency Optimization for Addressable Ad Platforms: A Decision Science Approach,” demonstrates how Multi-Touch Attribution and Optimization can be applied to drive improvements in campaign brand lift outcomes, “With years of experience applying MTA and Optimization under our belts, we wanted to share our learnings as they are now more relevant than ever because of budget pressures due to COVID-19,” said John Cripps, Principle, Analytics Practice, Kantar. “Despite this, most digital advertisers are still spending ineffectively and leaving money on the table. The paper discusses the ways in which media planners go astray in analyzing brand lift data, and how media planners should use an algorithmic approach rather than relying purely on analytic intuition. There are large gains in efficiency to be made through selective reach and frequency trade-offs, and much improved ad targeting, all captured in our algorithmic approach.”
Adtech innovators are facing an uphill battle in part due to the Covid-19 crisis, and as a result, we’re seeing new strategies and creative initiatives emerge from small players and larger publishers alike. The Cynopsis Adtech Awards was created to applaud the adtech community’s ability to thrive despite a cookie-less future and challenges spurred by the COVID pandemic. Have a company in mind? ON THE MONEY
Broadcast revenue for Disney’s ABC and O&O stations were up 3% in the fiscal second quarter ending March 28, reported Disney Senior EVP/CFO Christine McCarthy during an earnings call, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a decline in the current quarter. “The net impact is what we are expecting is a significant decline in ad sales,” said McCarthy. “We’ll see it more at ESPN, due to the lack of live sporting events, than we will at the broadcast network.”
US ad revenues at Discovery Inc. were stable for the first quarter. Total advertising sales were flat despite a decrease in linear subscribers, driven by increases in pricing, continued monetization of content offerings on next generation platforms, and higher inventory. “We will continue to focus on maintaining a healthy balance sheet with robust liquidity and investing in our businesses to position ourselves for long-term growth amid the changes in the pay-TV landscape,” said David Zaslav, President and CEO. As for the Tokyo Olympics, which is carried by Discovery overseas, being moved to 2021 is “probably going to be a little better for us,” Zaslav said during a conference call. With the Summer and Winter Games only a few months apart, “We can get advertisers into both of them together.” While US ad revenue dropped 20% in April amid the pandemic, the May and June appear slightly better, said CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels – cautioning that with so much in flux, investors should take that projection “with a grain of salt.”
Sinclair Broadcast Group reported 1Q20 media revenues grew to $1.6 billion, versus $673 million in 1Q19 and just under analysts’ expectations of $1.65 billion. Political revenues rose to $42 million from $2 million, distribution revenues grew to $1.2 billion versus $352 million and revenues from digital businesses saw a 38% hike. The company, which acquired 21 regional sports networks and Fox College Sports from Disney last summer, as well as a 20% ownership in the Yankees’ YES Network, withdrew its financial outlook for the year because of uncertainty over the coronavirus crisis. Still, “We are confident that our diversified revenue streams, content, and delivery platforms will allow us to see our company through the pandemic’s effects and that we will be able to meet our liquidity needs,” said President and CEO Chris Ripley.
Nextstar Media Group also saw a rise in revenue, to $1.1 billion from $627 million from the first quarter of 2019. Nexstar acquired Tribune Media in a deal that closed in September. “Our strong first quarter financial results reflect healthy levels of core and digital advertising spending in January and February, robust political ad spending across several key markets, significant distribution revenue growth and a cash distribution from our 31% ownership stake in TV Food Network,” said Perry Sook, Nexstar Chairman, President and CEO, who cautioned the impact of COVID-19 “is uncertain as conditions continue to evolve.” Sook also told analysts that three-hour nightly news show News Nation is moving forward as planned, with a September 1 launch on WGN America.
Fox reported revenue for the fiscal quarter rose 25%, beating analysts’ estimates, boosted in part by a 44% jump in ad revenue for the Super Bowl. “We delivered exceptional operational and financial results in the quarter, highlighted by our successful broadcast of Super Bowl LIV on Fox,” said CEO Lachlan Murdoch. “While we remain focused on continuing to execute against the strategy that drove this strong performance, we are acutely mindful of the global health crisis and its countless impacts. Our highest priority remains the safety and well-being of our employees and their families.”
