Nielsen announced the launch of Nielsen Streaming Video Ratings, a syndicated service that provides visibility into total viewership and advanced audience demographic insights by streaming platform alongside linear TV ratings. “Now more than ever, it’s important for our clients to have a clear understanding of the streaming landscape, both from a program or content perspective, which our SVOD service does, as well as at a macro view of audience consumption that takes into account the total use of streaming platforms comparable to linear TV,” said Kevin Rini, SVP Product Management, Nielsen.
Comscore struck a new strategic partnership with DISH Media, extending its data license to vMVPD Sling TV. The expanded license agreement protects consumer privacy data and includes first party matching rights to improve accuracy of campaign results and national addressable measurement of programming networks. “Comscore’s new partnership with DISH Media continues our company’s significant steps in our transformation of television and cross-platform measurement of linear and OTT,” said Bill Livek, CEO, Comscore.
Ad buyer optimism is on the rise in 2021, according to the IAB’s first quarter impact study, with only 15% of ad buyers reporting that 2020 events had great impact on their annual budgeting. “Ad buyer optimism for 2021 has increased in just the past five months,” notes the new IAB report. “Confidence in 2021 ad budgets has reduced the need for frequent re-examination and reallocation of spend, which was common in 2020.”
HBO and HBO Max now reach a combined 44.2 million US subscribers, up from 41 million at the end of 2020. In its first quarter earnings report, AT&T said 30.9 million subscribers are “wholesale” customers who subscribe to HBO and get HBO Max for free, while 9.7 million subscribe directly to the streaming service.
Snapchat added 15 million new users in 1Q21, and the number of daily active users rose 22% year-over-year, to hit 280 million. “We began 2021 by achieving our highest year-over-year revenue and daily active user growth rates in over three years during the quarter, and delivering positive free cash flow for the first time in Snap’s history as a public company,” said CEO Evan Spiegel. “The strength of our business underscores our relentless focus on product innovation and is a testament to our team’s ability to execute well together over the long term.”
The FCC voted 4-0 to require stations to let viewers know when foreign governments purchase time on their airwaves. Instances of Chinese and Russian sponsored programming were cited as examples of foreign governments increasingly leasing time on US stations.
New York Comic Con has been set for October 7-10 as an in-person event at the Javits Center, but with “very limited” attendance for now, according to parent company ReedPop. “You’re probably wondering what the heck a photo op may look like and how panel seating will work,” said ReedPop’s US Comic Portfolio Director, Kristina Rogers. “We’ll be sharing more information in the months leading up to our shows, and we are committed to being as transparent as possible.”

Lifetime docu-series “Cellmate Secrets” revisits some of the most infamous stories of criminals as part of Lifetime’s Summer of Secrets lineup. AT&T’s data-enabled technology platform Xandr shared results of premium video and CTV spend on its platform for 1Q21. Total digital video spend globally grew 75% year-over-year, with the primary driver CTV; total global platform spend was up 235%. Video now represents 35% of overall spend on Xandr’s platform. Growth in international platform spend is contributing significantly to Xandr’s overall global platform growth – total platform spend in Xandr’s markets outside of the US grew 30% year-over-year, with video spend up 55%.
Twitter is launching a live test of “Professional Profiles,” a customizable module format within Twitter Business that will allow brands, as well as publishers and creators, to display information about their businesses on their profiles.
