IN THE NEWS

CBS News and The Weather Channel are partnering for weather reports, as well as investigative reports on climate. “By bringing together CBS News and the Weather Channel’s weather teams and virtual view technology, we will not only be able to forecast the weather but show viewers what it’s really going to look like,” said Neeraj Khemlani, President and Co-Head of CBS News and Stations. The Weather Channel’s reports will air on the network’s morning and evening news, as well as the CBS News Streaming Network.

The most-discussed Oscars topic on social media was no surprise. There were 3,357,759 Tweets mentioning Will Smith on March 27, and 2,096,580 Tweets mentioning Chris Rock, according to ListenFirst. Will Smith and Chris Rock were mentioned together in a tweet 1,410,714 times, while a tweet sharing the Japanese television feed of Smith slapping Rock with uncensored audio got 609,953 engagements and was the most popular Tweet mentioning both of them. All told, there were 6,782,662 tweets that mentioned the Oscars on March 27, up 164% from 2021, including one from Oscars producer Will Packer: “Welp…I said it wouldn’t be boring.”

Packer’s tweet drew some criticism for being flippant, comments he addressed on Monday. “Black people have a defiant spirit of laughter when it comes to dealing with pain because there has been so much of it. I don’t feel the need to elucidate that for you,” he posted. “But I also don’t mind being transparent and say that this was a very painful moment for me. On many levels.”

As for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which initially addressed the situation by tweeting, “The Academy does not condone violence in any form,” the group on Monday condemned Smith’s actions and said it has started a formal review. The Academy stated it “will explore further actions and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law.”

Ratings-wise, the Oscars telecast delivered 15.4 million viewers and 2.9 among A18-49 in early Nielsens, a big jump from last year’s 10.4 million viewers and 2.1 in the demo, but still the second-lowest-rated ever.

Thirty-eight percent of the commercials that aired on the Oscars were part of the media and entertainment category, up from 24% in 2021, by MediaRadar’s count. Seventeen percent in the category were ads for TV shows. Major technology companies accounted for 14% of the commercials shown during the broadcast.

Also crunching Oscars ad numbers was EDO, which found that Lucid saw the most engagement for its spot. The car company had one million additional searches after the ad for its EV aired. Incremental searches in the auto category overall nearly doubled from last year – 33% of the total searches during the Oscars’ ad breaks this year were a result of auto advertising.

The Walt Disney Co. was quick to respond after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law House Bill 1157, aka the “Don’t Say Gay” bill, banning the instruction of gender identity and sexual orientation to young children. The bill “should never have been signed into law,” said a Disney spokesperson. “Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that. We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.” The swift rebuke follows criticism of the company for not speaking out more forcefully earlier.

IPG Mediabrands lowered its US ad growth estimate by 1.5 points, from the 13% expansion in 2022 projected in December. “The Ukraine crisis has already hit consumer and business confidence,” said Magna EVP-Global Market Intelligence Vincent Létang. “It will slow down economic growth in 2022 and fuel the inflationary trend.” The national linear TV marketplace is forecast to slip 5% this year, while national AVOD, OTT and CTV is expected to grow by 27%.

Sesame Workshop unveiled a new Muppet character, Ameera, a spunky 8-year-old girl who uses a wheelchair and crutches. The character aims to call attention to the over 12 million refugees and over 240 million children worldwide who have a disability. Next week, Ameera will debut as part of “Ahlan Simsim” (“Welcome Sesame” in Arabic), the local version of “Sesame Street” in the Middle East. In addition to appearing in “Ahlan Simsim,” Ameera will feature in new animations designed to quickly respond to children in active crisis contexts, including Ukraine.

TECH TALK

President Biden’s proposed 2023 budget includes $600 million in additional spending for the ReConnect program, to build high-speed internet access in rural communities. To be eligible for funding, applicants must serve an area without broadband service at speeds of 100 megabits per second downstream and 20 Mbps upstream, and commit to building facilities capable of providing broadband service at speeds of 100 Mbps (downstream and upstream) to every location in its proposed service area.

Ad spend on Digital Audio (audio streaming and podcasts) is approaching parity with investment on Terrestrial Radio, after being just a third of the market three years ago. According to Standard Media Index’s new Digital Audio Advertising Spend and Pricing Solution, the increase is being driven largely by ad spend on podcasts, which grew 68% year-over-year in 2021 and that now account for 8% of all Digital Audio spend. “Podcasts are not a new format, but over the last several years and especially during the pandemic, consumer consumption has accelerated and advertisers are following their audiences to the channel” said Ben Tatta, President, SMI. “Due to their highly-contextual ad formats, such as custom/native spots and host read-ads, Podcasts are commanding heavy premium CPMs.”
