Viewership for the Oscars averaged 17.8 million, according to AdImpact, with peak viewership hitting 20.6 million at 9:03p. Linear viewing made up 64.4% of the audience, followed by YouTube and YouTubeTV at 19.4%. Other streaming platforms, including Hulu and FuboTV, accounted for 16.2%.
Disney issued a statement about Hulu’s livestream of the Oscars, which drew complaints for glitches and ended for many viewers before the two final awards were presented. “Yesterday evening, we experienced technical and live stream issues on Hulu which impacted some Oscars viewers,” wrote the company on Monday. “We apologize for the experience.”
Fox is aiming for football season to kick off its new streaming platform. Speaking at the Morgan Stanley media conference, Fox CEO Lachlan Murdoch discussed the success of the Super Bowl on Tubi. “This year, despite not the best game, we achieved record ratings, 126 million viewers,” said Murdoch. “Tubi generated about 24 million viewers, and about 15.5 million concurrent views watching the stream.” And notably, about 40% of the audience on Tubi had not used the service before. |
Free TV Networks’ fourth OTA digital broadcast network, Busted (tagline: It’s Criminal Not to Watch”) has launched, with programming like “Car Chase,” “Cops Reloaded” and “Bounty Tank.” “Busted is the only dedicated broadcast channel that takes audiences on vicarious real-life ride-alongs to witness justice in action,” said Jonathan Katz, Free TV Networks President/CEO. “While the migration from cable forces many legacy media businesses to contract, Free TV Networks continues to grow as more and more value-conscious consumers combine antenna usage with streaming.” The network joins Free TV sibs Outlaw, The365 and Defy.
Journalist Aaron Katersky has been promoted to ABC News Chief Investigative Correspondent based in New York. “Aaron is a one-of-a-kind and formidable journalist who is always one step ahead, quietly working behind the scenes on the next scoops that make the loudest impact,” said ABC News President Almin Karamehmedovic. “With his extensive investigative experience, he will continue to break stories that dominate the news cycle for years to come.”
Over at MSNBC, Eugene Daniels just started as Senior White House Correspondent. The former co-author of Politico’s Playbook newsletter and President of the White House Correspondents’ Association has made frequent appearances on the network, joking to “Morning Joe” host Mika Brzezinski on Monday, “You guys put me on TV all the time, so now they just stuck me there. So this is all your fault.” Responded Brzezinski, “We’ll take it.” |
Global streaming network Ticker News is now available across the US and Canada on TugoTV, home to family-friendly entertainment spanning news, sports, and faith-based programming. “At a time of so much change and uncertainty, our mission is to deliver sharp, insightful news that helps viewers navigate an increasingly complex world,” said Ahron Young, Founder and CEO of Ticker News.
Americans’ trust in the media is at its lowest point in over 50 years, according to Gallup polling. About two-thirds of Americans in the 1970s trusted the mass media either “a great deal” or “a fair amount” to report news “fully, accurately and fairly.” By 1997, confidence had fallen to 53%. Now, 31% of respondent say they trust the media a great deal or a fair amount, 33% say they do “not [trust it] very much,” and 36% (up from 6% in 1972) say they had no trust at all. Republicans’ lack of trust in the media topped 50% for the first time in 2020 and has since remained at the majority level. Lack of trust is also up sharply among independents, now 42%, while it continues to be low – 6% this year – among Democrats. Another 29% of Republicans, 32% of independents and 40% of Democrats in 2024 reported having “not much” trust in the news media, resulting in the vast majority of Republicans (88%) and independents (74%) and nearly half of Democrats (46%) having low trust in the media. Conversely, 12% of Republicans, 27% of independents and 54% of Democrats trust it “a great deal” or “a fair amount.” |
