PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Mindy Kaling’s untitled coming-of-age-comedy got a 10-epsiode series order at Netflix. Co-created, co-written and executive produced by Kaling and Lang Fisher, who also serve as showrunners, the semi-autobiographical series explores the life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl. David Miner (30 Rock, Master of None) will exec produce with Kaling and Fisher. Universal TV, where Kaling was previous under a deal before inking with Netflix, is the studio.
Ava DuVernay, the creative force behind OWN series Queen Sugar, is bringing her next series to the network. With a straight-to-series order, DuVernay will create and exec produce Cherish the Day, an anthology series from Warner Horizon Scripted Television as part of her recently announced overall deal with the studio. Winfrey will executive produce alongside DuVernay for a winter 2020 premiere; filmmaker Tanya Hamilton (Queen Sugar, Night Catches Us) serves as exec producer/showrunner. Each season will chronicle the romance of one couple, with each ep spanning a single day.
Momentum Content inked an exclusive overall deal with Industrial Media, home studio of American Idol. Under the pact, the Momentum team will create, develop and produce new television content under the Industrial Media umbrella.
Netflix acquired rights to upcoming Mary Kubica suspense novel The Other Mrs., which it will turn into a feature film. The novel is slated for US publication in 2020. Kubica will exec produce the film.

Emmy winner Gavin Purcell signed an exclusive overall producing deal with Universal Television that comprises unscripted and scripted programming. Purcell most recently was showrunner and exec producer on Hulu’s I Love You America with Sarah Silverman. Before that he headed video at Vox Media.
Matthew A. Cherry, who exec produced BlacKkKlansman and directs on ABC’s new Whiskey Cavalier, is teaming with Sony Pictures Animation on the short animated film Hair Love, for which he ran a Kickstarter campaign two years ago that’s raised $300,000.
Nigel Williams, who penned Catherine The Great, is teaming with European producer Wild Horses on Three Lions, a period drama focused around King Richard I. Williams is writing the 10-part series, which was created by Nicolas Deprost, and begins when King Richard I is shipwrecked somewhere off the coast of Trieste and follows the power vacuum his absence and suspected death create.

From the creators of Deadliest Catch and Storage Wars, new eight-part docu-series The American Farm bows Thursday, April 4 at 10p on History. Series takes an authentic look at the hardship, dedication and personal triumphs of America’s farmers via five family farms across the country.
Dr. Diarra Blue, Dr. Aubrey Ross and Dr. Michael Lavigne are back in a new season of The Vet Life, premiering Saturday, April 6 at 9p on Animal Planet. New season continues to follow the daily lives of the passionate vets at their Cy-Fair animal hospital in Houston.
New episodes of The Book of John Gray, featuring pastor John Gray of Relentless Church in Greenville, SC, will debut beginning Saturday, April 6 at 9p on OWN.
Season 8 of Seaguar’s Extreme Kayak Fishing Challenge and season 10 of Jackson Kayak’s Kayak Fishing Show are set for spring debuts on Sportsman Channel on Sunday, April 7 at 2:30p and 6:30p, respectively. Both series are hosted by kayak angler Jim Sammons.
Business is booming for home renovation experts Clint Robertson and Luke Caldwell in season two of HGTV’s Boise Boys, premiering Wednesday, April 24, at 11p, when the best friends and business partners take new reno risks on properties with serious problems in the Idaho capital city.
Netflix yesterday dropped its first full trailer for season 3 of Stranger Things that tied in handily with its new adaptation of Motley Crue memoir The Dirt, which premieres tomorrow (March 22). While the new season of Stranger Things is months away, the trailer kicks off with the song “Home Sweet Home,” by the Crue.
Six fan-favorite couples return for TLC’s 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After?, which kicks off its fourth season of 12 two-hour eps on Sunday, April 28 at 8p. Special eps “90 Day Fiance: Pillow Talk” extend the franchise to a new night for the first time, beginning Monday, April 29.
WGN America dropped four new trailers for the second season of Pure, which drops Tuesday, May 28 at 10p.

Oxygen Media will air two-hour special The Piketon Family Murders on Sunday, March 31 at 7p. Hosted by Beth Karas, the special delves into a complicated and horrific massacre that stunned the small town of Piketon, Ohio, when in 2016 seven members of the Rhoden family as well as Hannah Gilley, the fiancee of one of the victims, were found murdered.
AXS TV dropped a first look at Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus: The Final Farewell, its documentary in conjunction with Feld Entertainment slated to premiere Monday, May 27 at 8p. In the clip, Feld Entertainment chair/CEO Kenneth Feld, producer and Feld Entertainment EVP Alana Feld, cast and crew reflect on the circus’ place in American history, discuss the personal impact the circus has had on their lives, and contemplate the emotional effects of the circus’ bittersweet ending.

Directed by Monika Mitchell and written by Cara Russell, the project follows an English knight who seeks out his true quest after a sorceress inadvertently sends him from the medieval era to the present, where he finds himself falling for a high school science teacher. Josh Whitehouse (Valley Girl, the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel), also stars.
Imagicomm Entertainment has made its INSP series Brush of Honor available through Amazon Prime Video. Series, narrated by Gary Sinese, follows artist Phil Taylor on a mission to pay tribute to America’s fallen military service members. In each ep, he embarks on a journey to learn as much as he can about them in order to accurately reflect the fallen hero’s true spirit in a hand-painted original portrait.

In the battle for YouTube subscriber bragging rights, India music and pop culture brand T-Series pulled ahead of s PewDiePie as the No. 1 most-subscribed channel on the platform briefly before PewDiePie’s restored him to the top slot with 90.40 million subs to T-Series’ 90.396 million at press time.
Apple announced an updated version of its AirPods wireless earphones that includes hands-free access to Siri and an optional wireless charging case that can he used with a wireless charging pad.
The European Commission ordered Google to pay $1.7 billion for suppressing competition, ruling the company prevented rivals from fairly competing and innovating with regard to online advertising with regard to Google’s AdSense contracts… In other Google news, the Supreme Court yesterday sent back to the lower courts a long-running privacy class-action against Google over whether the company harmed people by transmitting their search queries to publishers.
Glossier, which launched in 2010 as a beauty blog and is known for its line of beauty products, landed a $100 million Series D led by Sequoia Capital. The latest round values Emily Weiss’ business at $1.2 billion.
Launched by Hollywood producer Uri Singer of Passage Films and former Netflix and Apple exec George Berry, TaleFlick enables authors to directly showcase their works to movie and television studios. Hidden camera series comes from the producers of Undercover Boss and features celebrities who are transformed by a team of special effects artists to go undercover as substitute teachers, surprising classes of unsuspecting students. The premiere ep guest stars Jace Norman (Henry Danger).
In other Nick news… the net has built a strong digital and social campaign around the Kids’ Choice Awards, which air Saturday, March 23. The campaign kicked off with Double Dare host and YouTube star Liza Koshy announcing this year’s KCA nominees and host via a livestream, which fueled online voting to more than 36 million global votes in first three days, up triple-digits over last year.

The Last O.G. is giving back to Brooklyn. TBS and creator/star Tracy Morgan on March 28 will unveil the New Hattie Carthan Community Garden as part of TBS’ partnership with GrowNYC to renovate one of Brooklyn’s largest
