Reddit stock jumped 48% for its IPO on Thursday. The initial offering price was $34 per share; shares opened at $47 and closed at $50.44. While the company has not turned an annual profit since launching in 2005, it is touting the potential of selling its users’ data to information-hungry AI companies for training tools. For now Reddit’s revenue primarily comes from advertising, with eMarketer projecting its digital ads business will grow 30% in 2024.

The U.S. Dept. of Justice, 16 states and the District of Columbia filed an anti-trust suit against Apple Inc. on Thursday, alleging the iPhone maker engaged in practices aimed at keeping customers reliant on the company’s smartphones and less likely to switch to devices from competitors. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, claims that Apple’s actions “built and reinforced a moat around its smartphone monopoly,” prevented other companies from offering apps that competed with its products, and that its policies hurt consumers and its smaller competitors with “higher prices and less innovation.” The government is asking the court to cease from engaging in those current practices and an unspecified financial penalty.

Digital World Access Corporation shareholders voted on Friday to merge with Donald Trump’s social media company, Trump Media, parent of social media platform Truth Social. The merger calls for Trump to own about 79 million shares, or 58.1% of the company, to be renamed Trump Media & Technology Group. Digital World shares fell 14% by the end of Friday.

Parrot Analytics announced the launch of Parrot IQ, a consultancy arm designed to offer data-backed consulting within the media and entertainment industry. “Parrot IQ stands as a beacon for those navigating the complex interplay between content and finance, aiming to set a new standard in IP valuation,” said Wared Seger, CEO of Parrot Analytics. “Our goal is to transform these insights into an industry benchmark, guiding our clients toward unprecedented financial success.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The government of Saudi Arabia is creating a $40 billion fund to invest in artificial intelligence. The New York Times reports representatives of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund have discussed a potential partnership with Andreessen Horowitz, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm, along with other financiers. A fund of that magnitude would make Saudi Arabia the world’s largest investor in AI.

Following up on an announcement made in November, YouTube introduced a new tool in Creator Studio requiring creators to disclose to viewers when realistic content is made with altered or synthetic media, including generative AI. Examples of content that require disclosure include using the likeness of a realistic person, altering footage of real events of places, and showing a realistic depiction of fictional major events, like a tornado moving toward a real town. However, “We won’t require creators to disclose if generative AI was used for productivity, like generating scripts, content ideas, or automatic captions,” said YouTube in a blog post. “We also won’t require creators to disclose when synthetic media is unrealistic and/or the changes are inconsequential.”

Companies that invest in AI tools have seen an average increase in revenue of 24%, according to data from Keen Decision Systems. Among marketers at mid-size and enterprise companies, 61% plan to invest in AI/ML tools for marketing measurement in 2024. Currently, 60% of companies invest in AI tools to support marketing measurement, with companies with less than 1,000 employees being 20% more likely to invest in AI. “While AI continues to be a buzzword for many industries, its application is actually having positive business impacts for marketers,” said Greg Dolan, CEO of Keen Decision Systems. “AI can significantly improve forecasting and measurement for marketers, leading to increases in revenue and ROI.”

Don’t tell SAG-AFTRA. Twenty-two percent of respondents to Deloitte’s Digital Media Trends survey said gen AI could write TV shows and movies that are more interesting than those written by humans. Millennials were the strongest believers in AI-as-creator, (30%), followed by Gen Z consumers (25%). Overall, 42% of those surveyed said generative AI and humans can each produce entertaining content.

Advertisers leveraging big screens are seeing interactive CTV campaigns achieve engagement rates 4.6x higher than mobile video and 10.3x higher than desktop video, according to Innovid’s “The CTV Advertising Report 2024: Your Data-Driven Source for CTV Performance Trends.” Key findings include:
· CTV accounted for 53% of video impressions – up 12% compared to the year prior. The average CTV campaign reach in 2023 more than doubled compared to two years prior.
· The average frequency delivered has increased by almost 80% – up from 4.08 to 7.40 – over the past two years.
· Audiences expect relevant, 1:1 content – even with ad experiences – and it shows with the amount of time they spend with advanced creatives. Interactive ads had an average of 92 additional seconds of time earned vs. standard pre-roll video. Dynamic ads, those personalized to the viewer, generated more than 38 seconds of additional time earned.

At Wednesday’s One24 event, NBCUniversal unveiled new tech and data capabilities including audience segments powered be generative AI; the Olympics being made available to advertising programmatically; shoppable innovations like Virtual Concessions, enabling viewers to have items delivered to their doorstep; One Platform Total Measurement, a new framework that supports the company’s cross-platform planning and activation technology, One Platform Total Audience by bringing viewership insights and outcome-based metrics together; and new partnerships with VideoAmp, EDO, and Kochava. “Television today is a full-funnel performance vehicle where marketers can launch, build and grow their brands across any screen at scale,” said Mark Marshall, Chairman, Global Advertising & Partnerships, NBCUniversal. “At One24, we’re continuing to drive our legacy of innovation, moving consumers from aspiration to action and partnering with marketers of all sizes to use technology to move their businesses forward.”

Cinch announced today their adoption of Unified ID 2.0 (UID2), a privacy-conscious identity solution built for the open internet, into their identity framework. Clinch is the first client-side ad server to incorporate UID2, pioneered by The Trade Desk. “To streamline the complexities of multiple currencies, we’re prioritizing identity-agnostic support for agency and advertiser partners,” said Charel MacIntosh, Head of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships. “This proactive approach aims to facilitate a smooth transition for our clients amid the uncertainty third-party cookie deprecation brings.”

MEASUREMENT

Comscore has gained accreditation by the Media Rating Council for the Total Household Rating and Average Audience estimates in its national and local TV time-based grid reports, the first time a TV measurement provider has been accredited in all 210 measured local markets based on device tuning measurement. “Comscore is to be commended for the significant effort they have made over a number of years to put enhancements and upgrades into place in response to our feedback,” said George Ivie, Executive Director and CEO of MRC, adding that the distinction “will benefit the industry as a whole.”

Integral Ad Science also got good news from MRC, winning accreditation covering its third-party calculation and reporting of Google ADH-MP measurement data from the Google Ads, Display & Video 360, and YouTube Reserve services.

STREAMING

Acorn TV has a new look, and a new tagline: “Brilliant.” “Acorn TV is a beloved streaming brand that goes deep on international mysteries, dramas and thrillers,” said Kim Granito, CMO of AMC Networks. “It was one of the world’s first targeted streamers and we’re excited to broaden its audience potential with a modernized campaign that frames Acorn around the shows our subscribers love.”

Streaming viewing in February was up10% year-over-year to a 37.7% share for total day viewing, according to Nielsen. YouTube hit its best share ever at 9.3%, up 0.7% from January, to lead premium streamers. Netflix was in second place, dipping from a 7.8% share to 7.5%. Among major FAST channels, Pluto TV rose 10% to a 0.8% share, Tubi, saw an 8.3% lift to 1.7%, and Roku Channel was up 8.1% to a 1.2% share. With a Super Bowl boost, Paramount+ was up 24%, for a 1.1% share in February.

Streaming’s share of viewing time has increased from 49.3% to 57.5% in Q4 since 2021, while cable/satellite has fallen from 41.5% to 33.8%, according to Inscape’s Q4 2023 TV Market Trends report. Of note: Smart TV app usage has leveled off over the last nine months, landing at around 5.5 native apps used per device. Inscape notes that this is “perhaps a sign to the market that consumers have had their fill and are simply fatigued by an endless array of subscriptions and authentications to navigate.”

There’s a new AVOD in town. Or there will be starting April 30, with the launch of The Network, described as a platform that “seeks to declutter the streaming experience, eliminating audiences’ endless scrolling to find appealing series and films.” The streamer will release two originals at a time: dramas on Tuesdays and comedies on Thursdays. Created by Aram Rappaport, founder of the creative ad-agency The Boathouse with backing from BH Media Holdings, the service will be available on all devices across Apple, Android, Roku, Amazon Fire, and web.

Paramount+’s international ad-supported subscription offering, the “Basic (with ads)” plan, will roll out in April in Canada and in June in Australia, priced at $6.99 CAD and AUD, respectively. The Paramount+ “Premium” plan is also headed to Europe, beginning with France this month.

TCLtv+, the flagship streaming service offered by electronics company, TCL, has added 13 new FAST channels. Offerings include Judge Faith, Nolly Africa, Craftsy TV, Beyond Paranormal, Pursuit Up, Air & Space, FloRacing, MavTV Select, WatchMojo, Hipstr, Travel Escapes, GoTraveler and FamilyTime.
