IN THE NEWS

CNN’s news and sports employees will likely be heading back to the office in a few months. In a company email, CNN President Jeff Zucker said the network is targeting September 1 as the day to open offices and studios in New York, San Francisco and LA locations, with safety protocols in place. “We have operated in a way that most of us never would have imagined possible,” Zucker told staffers. “That is a true credit to every single one of you.” Zucker’s email was just one that went out to alert WarnerMedia employees of a slow return to offices starting in September.

Over at ViacomCBS, the goal is to give US employees the option of returning to the office right after July 4th weekend, at the earliest. In a memo to employees, CEO Bob Bakish said the return would be limited and “completely voluntary.”

Not only is ad inventory for the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament “virtually sold out,” but there were price increases in all rounds through the championship weekend, said John Bogusz, EVP,CBS Sports Sales in a call with reporters. New corporate partners include Aflac, Invesco and Great Clips.

Cable TV saw its highest share of time spent in the second half of 2020 versus the year prior, with 71% of that attributed to consumption of cable versus broadcast and premium networks in Q3, according to Effectv’s latest Television Viewership Report. Key findings include:
· Comcast households saw a shift toward live TV in 2H 2020, accounting for 89% of daily viewership.
· Over the last three full years of viewing data, time spent with cable networks and live viewing has been up or flat year-over-year every quarter.
· Cable TV news drove a large percentage of the increase in time spent with live TV in 2H 2020 at 25%, up from 16% the same time the previous year.
“TV viewing in the second half of the year was impacted dramatically by the unique circumstances of 2020, and it was particularly interesting to see how live viewing surged as a result of some of those factors,” said James Rothwell, VP, Global Agency, Brand and Industry Relations at Comcast Advertising, Effectv’s parent company. “Time spent with cable news…was the most dramatic driver of that increase in live viewing and illustrates the continued importance of TV for advertisers, as well as audience-based tactics to adapt to media consumption trends.”

Both the New York Times and Fox News have weighed in on FNC host Tucker Carlson’s mocking NY Times reporter Taylor Lorenz, who had tweeted about online harassment. Calling Carlson’s multiple criticisms of Lenz “calculated and cruel,” the paper said, “Journalists should be able to do their jobs without facing harassment.” Responded Fox News, “No public figure or journalist is immune to legitimate criticism of their reporting, claims or journalistic tactics.”

Carlson also got backlash for comments about accommodations for women in the US military. “So we’ve got new hairstyles and maternity flight suits,” said Carlson. “Pregnant women are going to fight our wars. It’s a mockery of the US military.” Responded the Sergeant Major of the Army, Michael A. Grinston, via tweet: “Women lead our most lethal units with character. They will dominate ANY future battlefield we’re called to fight on.”

Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and George W. Bush and their wives are featured in an Ad Council campaign, “It’s Up To You,” to encourage COVID-19 vaccination. The PSAs are airing nationally in space donated by media outlets. Shortly before the campaign went live on Thursday, former president Trump, who was not a participant, released a statement saying, “If I wasn’t president, you wouldn’t be getting that beautiful ‘shot’ for 5 years, at best, and probably wouldn’t be getting it at all. I hope everyone remembers!”

Do ad execs have half-baked ideas about a cookie-less future? While 67% of data leaders report that their organizations are prepared for the impending loss of third-party cookies and identifiers, the industry shares concerns regarding future limitations for targeting (45%) as well as for ad campaign measurement (41%), both tasks essential to conducting business-as-usual, according to the “IAB State of Data Initiative 2021” study. Noting that publishers will have to replace up to $10 billion in ad revenue with a combination of first-party data, gathered through a combination of paywalls and required registrations, and updated contextual targeting and probabilistic audience modeling, the study warns advertisers will need to build new data strategies or cooperate with walled gardens.
