Facebook has banned commerce listings and advertisements for medical face masks, part of an attempt to limit exploitation of the COVIS-19 outbreak. The company is also limiting ads for medical products that create a sense of urgency among buyers, as well as ads promising virus cures or prevention. Coronavirus-themed groups and pages will be blocked from Facebook’s algorithmic recommendations.

The ConnecTechAsia/BroadcastAsia event has been rescheduled for September 29-October 1, due to COVID-19 concerns. The event was originally slated to take place June 9-11 at Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. “Our ability to deliver an event that maximizes our attendee’s investment in time and resources is our biggest priority, and after considering all aspects, we have taken the decision to postpone this year’s edition,” said Ivan Ferrari, Director, Tech, Media & Entertainment Events, Informa Markets.

TVU Networks pulled out of the 2020 NAB Show, set for April 18-22 in Las Vegas, also over coronavirus fears. “While we will miss being there in person to meet with our colleagues from all over the world at this key industry event, we’re prioritizing the well-being of our staff, colleagues, and their families at this very critical time,” said Paul Shen, CEO, TVU Networks. “We did not make this decision lightly.” TVU is looking at “alternative ways” to participate, Shen added. Nikon is also bowing out of the event, citing coronavirus concerns.

Amid growing concerns over the security of its platform and data privacy issues, TikTok has hired cybersecurity expert Roland Cloutier as Chief Information Security Officer. “As TikTok grows and serves an ever-larger, more diverse global community, we have a clear responsibility to continue to maximize security on our platform,” said TikTok head Alex Zhu. “We are confident in our ability to earn the trust of the broader community by delivering world-class security systems, processes and policies.”Cloutier was previously Chief Security Officer at payroll services company ADP.

Google and Facebook ad revenue is set to top TV spend for the first time this year, forecast to reach $231.9 billion. According to new figures from Warc, TV ad spend will rise by 2.5% to reach 29.2% of all global advertising. The increase will come as a result of the 2020 US election, which will see over $ 3 billion spent on promoting presidential campaigns.

A federal judge tossed presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard’s lawsuit against Google over a several-hour suspension of her Google Ads account. While Gabbard claimed Google violated her right to free speech, Google countered that the suit should be dismissed since it isn’t the government, and therefore should not be bound by the First Amendment’s prohibition on censoring political speech. (Google also said the suspension occurred because its automated anti-fraud system flagged unusual activity, not for any reason tied to politics.) Noted U.S. District Court Judge Stephen Wilson, “Google is not now, nor (to the Court’s knowledge) has it ever been, an arm of the United States government.”

Twitter is testing “Fleets,” which let users share comments, pictures, videos and GIFs for a short time, like “Stories” on Snapchat and Instagram. “We want to make it possible for you to have conversations on the platform in new ways, with less pressure and more control,” said Twitter product manager Mo Al Adham on Twitter’s blog. US tweeters will have to be patient – the test is starting in Brazil.

Firstlight Media is teaming with Highview Capital Partners to buy Quickplay, a company specializing in distributing video content to connected devices, from AT&T. Firstlight, which runs a proprietary user engagement platform for OTT providers and content owners, will merge with Quickplay. Firstlight founder and CEO Andre Christensen, previously COO of Quickplay and Head of Product Development of AT&T, will run the combined business, which will operate under the Firstlight name.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises introduced its first AR experience: Dr. Suess’ ABC – An Amazing AR Alphabet! app, allowing kids to direct their own experience. Dr. Seuss Enterprises created the app in partnership with Sugar Creative; it’s available on the Apple Store and Goggle Play.

Apple will pay up to $500 million to settle a class-action lawsuit accusing it of slowing down older phones as it launched new models. The agreement, which requires judicial approval, has Apple paying $25 per iPhone affected. Apple denied wrongdoing; following early complaints about throttling, the company apologized and lowered the price for replacement batteries from $79 to $29.

When consumers are asked which TV networks and sources they’d keep if they were limited to only a few, about 4 in 10 said Netflix is one of their indispensable TV sources, 11 points higher than second-ranked CBS, according to Hub’s “Evolution of Video Branding” report. Among young consumers, 53% of 16-34-year-olds consider Netflix a must-have TV source, twice as high as second-ranked Hulu. Disney+, launched just three months ago, comes in third. For viewers 35+, the top three sources are broadcast networks.

Streaming television service Pluto TV, acquired by ViacomCBS last year, is rolling out a series of initiatives to enhance user experience, as well as a new brand identity and a consumer marketing campaign with the tagline: “Drop In. It’s Free.” Paired with the new campaign is the release of Project Venetia, delivering new features and design changes that enhance the platform’s ease of access. “Today marks another major step for Pluto TV in its mission to entertain the planet. Project Venetia makes it even easier for viewers to find and enjoy their favorite streaming TV programming,” said Tom Ryan, CEO and Co-Founder of Pluto TV. For details, go here.

Sports streaming service DAZN is expanding into 200 countries and territories, up from nine. Its first global live event, Canelo Alvarez’s Traditional Cinco de Mayo Weekend Fight, takes place May 2. While the service, launched in 2016, has focused on boxing, “fight sports is just the first step,” said DAZN EVP Joseph Markowski.

Hulu’s live TV subscription service is now available on PlayStation 4 consoles, nearly three years after its debut. While Hulu’s VOD service has long been available on PS4, its live TV service was not. The move means PlayStation 4 users will now to be able to subscribe to Hulu + Live TV, gaining access to channels including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in most U.S. markets, as well as cable channels, including ESPN, Fox News, CNN, FX and TNT.

Tubi struck a deal with technology company Enseo to launch its library on Enseo’s in-room entertainment platform accessible in over 30,000 hotel rooms. Hotel guests can choose from 20,000 movies and TV shows free from over 250 content partners. Tubi is available in guest rooms in over 20 hotel and resort brands, including independent boutique hotels around the country.

Waypoint TV selected Wurl, the provider of streaming video distribution and advertising services for connected TV, to power its Samsung TV Plus delivery. Wurl is enabling Waypoint TV’s catalog of over 1,000 hours of fishing and hunting shows and films to reach Samsung TV Plus users, with plans to expand the channel’s reach to additional OTT streaming platforms in the future.

AT&T TV launched nationwide last week. The contract-based, $49.99/month service offers an Android TV set-top box, hundreds of live TV channels, and the ability to install apps like Netflix, and control smart home devices with the remote.
