NBC Sports Group topped $1.25 billion in national advertising for the summer Olympics in Tokyo, a new record. “The momentum for Tokyo 2020 remains strong, but inventory is growing scarce as advertisers continue to value the massive reach of the Games and are eager to align their brands with the biggest media event of the year,” said Dan Lovinger, EVP, Ad Sales. Ad for coronavirus concerns, “We have insurance and contractual protections,” said Comcast CEO Brian Roberts at a media conference on Tuesday.
The Magicians is about to wrap. The fantasy drama’s current fifth season will be its last, with its final episode scheduled to air on Wednesday, April 1. The show, which premiered in January 2016, has been one of Syfy’s top series.
NBC is once again partnering with Comic Relief US and Red Nose Day for a three-hour block of themed programming on Thursday, May 21 to raise money and awareness for children living in poverty. Kicking off the night at 8p, executive producers Ben Stiller and Jack Black will participate in one-hour show Celebrity Escape Room, featuring Hollywood A-listers.
Inside Edition celebrates Deborah Norville’s 25th anniversary as anchor on Thursday, March 5. Norville, a former co-host of Today, joined Inside Edition in 1995 from CBS News, where she was anchor and correspondent.
Disney nixed plans for its European press launch for Disney+ in London, the latest industry gathering to be hit by coronavirus fears. The party was scheduled to take place at the Exhibition London event space on March 5 and include exclusive presentations from key executives and creative heads. Instead, Disney will promote the Disney+ launch via social media and press notices, as well as showcase the streaming service to select journalists during a demo in central London on Friday.

Quibi greenlit Sex Next Door, a docu-series exploring the lives of four sex workers in Seattle , reports Deadline. Directed by Anthony B. Sacco, the series takes and intimate and introspective look at the personal and professional lives of young people working in the sex industry.
In other Quibi news, the short form digital platform is partnering with Levity Live to produce new daily comedy series Hot Off The Mic. Established and emerging comedians will offer their takes on the latest headlines… Usher will serve as a judge and executive producer on The Sauce, Quibi’s upcoming dance competition series. Produced by Thalia Mavros’ The Front, The Sauce will be hosted by brothers and Atlanta-based dancers Ayo and Teo.

Ross Dinerstein’s Campfire partnered with Acast to launch Abuse of Power, a crime podcast that examines injustices at the hands of law enforcement and others in the criminal justice system. Husband and wife criminal defense duo David Rudolf and Sonya Pfeiffer, who have dedicated their lives to combating egregious abuses in law enforcement, will serve as hosts. The podcast is set to launch in late May.
STREAMING SNIPPETS
Hulu’s live TV subscription service is finally available on PlayStation 4 consoles. The move comes nearly three years after its debut. While Hulu’s VOD service has long been available on PS4, its live TV service was not. The move means PlayStation 4 users will now to be able to subscribe to Hulu + Live TV, gaining access to channels including ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in most U.S. markets, as well as cable channels, including ESPN, Fox News, CNN, FX and TNT.
Apple TV+ debuts Home on Friday, April 17. The docu-series offers viewers a never-before-seen look inside some of the world’s most innovative homes.
Disney moved upcoming teen drama series Love, Victor, from the writers of film Love Simon, from Disney+ to Hulu. Sources shared that Disney+ executives felt that certain themes, like underage alcohol use and sexual exploration, did not fit the streaming platform’s “family friendly” programming, according to Industry trades.
Tubi struck a deal with technology company Enseo to launch its library on Enseo’s in-room entertainment platform accessible in over 30,000 hotel rooms. Hotel guests can choose from 20,000 movies and TV shows free from over 250 content partners. Tubi is available in guest rooms in over 20 hotel and resort brands, including independent boutique hotels around the country.
Waypoint TV selected Wurl, the provider of streaming video distribution and advertising services for connected TV, to power its Samsung TV Plus delivery. Wurl is enabling Waypoint TV’s catalog of over 1,000 hours of fishing and hunting shows and films to reach Samsung TV Plus users, with plans to expand the channel’s reach to additional OTT streaming platforms in the future.
Amazon will stream 21 New York Yankees games this season via a deal struck by the New York Yankees, Amazon Prime Video and the YES Network, at no additional cost to Prime members. The first game is scheduled for Friday, April 17. Yankees live streams will feature Amazon’s X-Ray technology, which allows fans streaming on Android, iOS mobile and Fire TV to access live in-game stats, team and player details, and real-time play-by-play information as they watch.
Endeavor owns a piece of digital content platform Tongal. Tongal announced a $13 million investment round led by previous investor Insight Partners with participation from Endeavor. In recent months, Endeavor has been using Tongal to develop video content, podcasts and series across many of its businesses.

Google and Facebook ad revenue is set to top TV spend for the first time this year, forecast to reach $231.9 billion. According to new figures from Warc, TV ad spend will rise by 2.5% to reach 29.2% of all global advertising. The increase will come as a result of the 2020 US election, which will see over $ 3 billion spent on promoting presidential campaigns.
Firstlight Media is teaming with Highview Capital Partners to buy Quickplay, a company specializing in distributing video content to connected devices, from AT&T. Firstlight, which runs a proprietary user engagement platform for OTT providers and content owners, is will merge with Quickplay. Firstlight founder and CEO Andre Christensen, previously COO of Quickplay and Head of Product Development of AT&T, will run the combined business, which will operate under the Firstlight name.
Dr. Seuss Enterprises introduced its first Augment Reality experience: Dr. Suess’ ABC – An Amazing AR Alphabet! app, allowing kids to direct their own experience. Dr. Seuss Enterprises created the app in partnership with Sugar Creative; it’s available on the Apple Store and Goggle Play.

Sky and Disney agreed to a multi-year deal, making Disney+ available for purchase in the UK and Ireland on Sky Q, followed by NOW TV in the coming months. Customers will be able to watch shows like The Mandalorian, Forky Asks a Question, The World According to Jeff Goldbum and more. The agreement includes the first-pay window for 20th Century titles.
Earth Touch signed a host of international broadcast deals for Smithsonian Channel’s Epic Yellowstone. The series has been sold to ARTE, Discovery Asia, KBS, TVB Hong Kong, SVT, FTV Prima, Mediaset, Viasat, Ushuala TV and Thai PBS.

Rookie syndicated show Judge Jerry (0.9 L+SD national Nielsen rating, up 13% from the week before) made a double digit splash the week of February 17 despite Daytona 500 preemptions and the lightly viewed President’s Day. Dr. Phil (2.6, steady) was talk show king, leading the pack for the 177th time in the past 181 weeks. Meanwhile, the Nevada Democratic primary debate caused preemptions among the magazines and the show were without the Oscars, which had buoyed the category in the previous frame. Entertainment Tonight (2.9, down 3 %) was the highest rated magazine for the seventh week in a row.
