NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations announced the launch of “NBC Spot On,” a new advanced video advertising business offering local/regional CTV and OTT advertisers access to brand-safe long-form premium inventory that is fully owned or directly purchased. NBC Spot On can activate complex OTT/CTV campaigns across 100% of US DMAs and NBCUniversal’s sports regional networks, and deliver real-time business results. US consumers spend more time with TV than all other ad-supported platforms, according to preliminary results from the 2020 Media Comparisons Study from GfK in collaboration with TVB. The top medium for consumers was local broadcast TV, on-air and digital, found the study, with Adults 18+ spending 5 hours and 17 minutes with television daily; social media clocked in at 1 hour and 6 minutes. TV was also the top advertising medium influencing purchasing decisions – 63% higher than the number of those surveyed who cited social media. “Competition for consumers’ attention grows by the day, and yet television continues to stand tall as the medium with which people choose to spend most of their available time,” said Steve Lanzano, TVB President-CEO. “That continued dominance translates to dependable clout for advertisers across the marketing landscape. And at a time when accusations of ‘fake news’ fly from all corners of the media and social ecosystem, local TV in particular remains far and away the most trusted medium and source of information.”
ABC News yanked veteran correspondent David Wright from the air after he was recorded on a Project Veritas video describing himself a socialist, and saying, “Our bosses don’t see an upside in doing the job that we’re supposed to do, which is to speak truth to power and hold people to account.” Wright has been suspended, “and to avoid any possible appearance of bias, he will be reassigned away from political coverage when he returns,” said ABC News. Conservative organization Project Veritas is known for secretly recording media targets.
TEGNA and Gray Television struck a strategic partnership which has Gray acquiring a minority ownership interest in Premion, TEGNA’s CTV/OTT advertising business. Gray will serve as a reseller of Premion’s services across all of Gray’s 93 television markets. “Since our launch of Premion in 2016, we’ve quickly scaled the product and business to capitalize on the dramatic shift of audiences to streaming television. The Premion business exceeded $100 million in revenue in 2019, and we expect double-digit growth rates going forward,” said Dave Lougee, president and CEO, TEGNA. “We’re seeing tremendous growth opportunities in OTT, particularly at the local level. Our partnership with Gray will further accelerate Premion’s already exceptional growth by expanding our local footprint and leveraging Gray’s strong performing stations.”
truTV’s Impractical Jokers hit the big screen in a big way. Impractical Jokers: The Movie, an extension of the series, had a debut weekend total of $2.61 million and a per screen average of $7302 at 357 theaters. The film, directed by Chris Henchy (Daddy’s Home) and produced by Funny Or Die, will expand to over 1800 screens nationwide and additional markets including Canada in its second weekend. “We’ve always known the power of the Impractical Jokers fan base but this is more than we could have dreamed of for truTV’s first theatrical release,” said Brett Weitz, General Manager for TNT, TBS, & truTV. “In its eighth season on the small screen the Impractical Jokers’ audience and momentum has continued to build and now they’ve proven that the sky’s the limit for this comedy franchise.”
NBC moved the launch of new drama Council of Dads to Tuesday, March 24 at 10p, immediately following the season finale of This Is Us. The show, originally set to debut March 10, will slip into its new timeslot beginning Thursday, April 30 at 8p. New Amsterdam will air March 10 and 17 in its normal 10p timeslot.

Nickelodeon veteran Cyma Zarghami announced the launch of MiMO Studio, a full-service production and consultancy focused on kids and family content
. The New York-based studio will create content via multiple formats. “MiMO will challenge the typical content format and create franchise-potential properties that will engage kids and their families in deeper and more relevant ways,” said Zarghami. “MiMO Studio will be at the forefront of building a new franchise model for kids’ content in what is seeming more and more like a post-broadcast world.” MiMO’s first live-action movie, based on author Matt Christopher’s children’s book “The Kid Who Only Hit Homers,” began production earlier this month.
Amazon Studios is teaming with Macro Television Studios to develop a TV adaptation of 1987 sci-fi novel Dawn from Ava DuVernay’s Array Filmworks. Creator Victoria Mahoney (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) will adapt and direct the pilot.
BET+ picked up First Wives Club for a second season. “First Wives Club has been hugely successful on BET+, served as one of our signature originals at launch and helped us quickly become the largest African American focused SVOD service,” said BET+ GM Devin Griffin. “Our subscribers loved season one and are eagerly awaiting season two.”
ATX Television Festival is collaborating with Alamo Drafthouse to expand its footprint beyond Austin with the new event series, “TV at the Alamo presented by ATX,” showcasing screenings and panels in cities across the US. Events will feature content and personalities from major networks including AMC, The CW and more.
Sinclair Broadcast Group reported 4Q19 media revenues of $1.58 billion, versus $849 million in 4Q18, helped by distribution revenue of $1.1 billion, versus $334 million. Revenues from digital business increased by 36%. “2019 was a transformational year for our Company, as we almost tripled our enterprise value and transitioned into a more diversified media company,” said President and CEO Chris Ripley. “As the owner of the largest group of regional sports networks (RSNs) and a leading provider of local news, Sinclair is well-positioned to capitalize on the most desirable segments of the broadcast and media industry — live local content that resonates with viewers.”
AMC Networks posted full year revenue growth of 3%, up $88 million to $3.06 billion, while operating income dipped 14% versus the same period the prior year. The company passed 2 million subscribers for its four streaming services – Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now and UMC – and has plans to roll out its offerings internationally. “AMC Networks achieved its key financial targets for the year, against a backdrop of a rapidly shifting media ecosystem,” said President and CEO Josh Sapan. “We continue to move our organization in a new strategic direction, from what has been a cable channels company into a premier targeted content company that is now inhabiting the traditional pay-TV ecosystem, the advanced advertising world, as well as the emerging targeted SVOD marketplace.”
Financial results for Nextstar Media Group for the quarter included net revenue of $1.1 billion, up 37.9%, with a 76% increase in core advertising revenue, to $525 million. “Nexstar’s 2019 fourth quarter financial results capped an outstanding year for the company as we delivered another period of record off-cycle political year operating performance with net revenue, profitability, and cash flow metrics (before one-time transaction expenses) exceeding consensus expectations,” said Perry A. Sook, President and CEO, who noted growth in 16 of the 25 major ad categories. While retail in the fourth quarter didn’t meet expectations, he said, “The financial category was a pleasant surprise, as well as the service area.” Results reflect Nexstar’s acquisition of Tribune Media.

Season two of Shudder’s horror anthology series Creepshow will premiere on AMC ahead of its digital debut. “There’s absolute crossover between the brand and the content on some of our linear channels and OTT services,” said AMC Networks COO Ed Carroll during an investor call. “We think that [Creepshow] will be successful on AMC but will also then build audiences for the season two launch back on Shudder.”
Comedy dance competition The Funny Dance Show premieres on E! on Wednesday, March 11 art 10:30p, part of the net’s new “Laughter Hours” programming block. The series, based on Justine Marino and Heidi Heaslet’s live show developed at The World Famous Comedy Store, shows what happens when sometimes rhythmically challenged comedians become dancing competitors.
Disappearing ships, underwater anamolies and the Loch Ness Monster are some of the topics explored in new Science Channel series Mysteries of the Deep, launching Thursday, April 2 at 10p. Jeremy Wade (River Monsters) hosts.

Top Boy has been picked up for a fourth season on Netflix. The UK gang drama started life on Channel 4, moving to the streamer for its third season.

Meteorologist Jordan Steele will serve as weekday host for Quibi’s new show, Weather Today, launching on April 6 from The Weather Channel. The three-to-five-minute show will air seven days a week and feature the most important weather stories of the day, as well as a national forecast.
It’ll take three episodes for Bravo to cover the season ten reunion of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, as Andy Cohen hosts a conversation covering sex, cheating, eating disorders and more. First of three Wednesday-at-8p sessions airs March 4.
One week after the season finale of Netflix dating show Love Is Blind, the show’s couples will reunite on a March 5 reunion episode. In the “dating experiment” hosted by Nick and Vanessa Lachey, couples are paired off on dates, then followed after blind proposals.

Influencers marketing is “no longer the hot young thing making a splash at the party scene,” notes Linqia’s State of Influencer Marketing Report. Among the highlights: Influencer marketing is continuing to trend with 40% of marketers running six or more campaigns and 57% of marketers planning to increase their influencer budgets; micro-influencers (5-100K followers) continue to grow in popularity, while celebrity influencers are in decline; and being able to determine ROI from an influencer campaign remains the concern #1 among marketers.
Speaking of, Sylo, the third-party verification and measurement platform for influencer marketing, has joined the Nielsen Connect Partner Network. Through the partnership, Sylo is leveraging proprietary retail sales and shopper marketing data from the Nielsen Global Connect business to deliver insights on which influencers are influencing sales. Most consumers are okay with sharing personal information with government agencies if it means shorter wait time and better service, according to a study from Accenture. Seventy-eight percent of respondents said they see benefits from using AI-enabled assistants or chatbots, and 47% say they would like to complete some transactions using virtual agents.
Startup Clearview AI, compiler of photos for facial recognition technology, was hacked by an intruder who gained access to its customer list, the company informed its customers, which include law enforcement agencies and banks. “Unfortunately, data breaches are a part of life,” the company’s attorney said in a statement, adding that servers were “never accessed.”
Revenue from streaming music services increased nearly 20% in 2019, to $8.8 billion, according to a report from RIAA. The US streaming market for the year was larger than the entire US recorded music market two years ago. Subscription services accounted for the largest share of revenues, up 25% to hit $6.8 billion.
A+E Networks struck a deal to have some of its series stream on Comcast’s Peacock service, set to launch April 15. The agreement includes First 48, Storage Wars and Cold Case Files from A&E and Pawn Stars, American Pickers and Project Blue Book from History. A+E is a joint venture between The Walt Disney Company – which controls Peacock competition Hulu – and Hearst.

SVT has commissioned a six-part TV adaptation of Kerstin Ekman’s multi award-winning crime novel, Blackwater from Apple Tree Productions. Event series will be coproduced with ARD Degeto in Germany and Filmpool Nord, supported by the MEDIA Programme of the European Union and distributed internationally by ITV Studios.
Fremantle acquired 100% of British production company Naked Television, and tapped Naked’s founder Simon Andreae to serve as its UK CEO. Fremantle had had a 25% stake in the company. “I’m extremely proud of the brand we’ve built at Naked and am looking forward to supporting both them and Fremantle’s other world-class production labels as we shape a truly creative, collaborative and future-facing studio group,” said Andreae.

CBS News and BET+ drew over 15 million viewers for Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, according to Nielsen. That compares with 19.8 million for NBC/MSNBC’s record-setting knockdown in Las Vegas.
Add some syndicated shows to the list of Academy Award week winners, for the session ending February 16. Tamron Hall (1.0 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 11% from the week before) took viewers behind the scenes at the Hollywood event, while Live with Kelly and Ryan (2.2, up 5%) featured the program’s 9th annual “After Oscar Show” on February 10 and matched its highest rating of the season. Daily Mail TV hit a four-week high of 0.8 (up 14%).
Hallmark Channel’s “Love Ever After” programming event concluded this weekend, propelling the network to become the highest-rated entertainment cable network on weekends in February among Households and W18+. The four original premieres delivered the #1 program of the day every Saturday in February and averaged a 2.4 HH rating, 2.3 million Total Viewers, and 300,000 W25-54. The franchise made Hallmark Channel the second highest-rated and most-watched entertainment cable network in Total Day for the entire month among HHs and W18+.
