IN THE NEWS
Following its lowest-rated show ever, the 2022 Oscars will have trio of emcees: Wanda Sykes (“The Wanda Sykes Show”), Amy Schumer (“I Feel Pretty”) and Regina Hall (“The White Lotus”). The past three years, the show has gone host-less; Kevin Hart had the job in 2019, until old homophobic quotes prompted his exit. The Oscars, produced by Will Packer, airs Sunday, March 27 on ABC.
In more Oscars news, a fan-voted category has been added. Twitter users can vote for their favorite film; the winner will be revealed on the Academy Awards broadcast. Voting runs through March 3, and three Twitter voters will win a trip to LA to present an Oscar award at next year’s show.
“The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah will host the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner on April 30. “Trevor is an incredible talent who keeps us laughing — and thinking — four nights a week,” said Steve Portnoy, President of the WHCA. Noah is also hosting the Grammys ceremony, taking place April 3.
Tegna and Mediacom reached a retrans agreement just in time to bring Tegna stations back to Mediacom in time for the Super Bowl. “We appreciate the patience of our viewers while we worked to reach an agreement,” said Lynn Beall, EVP and COO, Media Operations and Tegna, and Italia Commisso-Weinland, EVP of Programming and Human Resources for Mediacom.
Viewership of Super Bowl ads on YouTube during game day rose over 35% in the living room from last year, according to YouTube, and the top national trending moment during the game was “50 cent super bowl,” with an increase of +26,000%. (50 Cent was the surprise guest during the halftime show.) The top ads by Gameday Views were Amazon’s Mind Reader; Zach Braff and Donald Faison’s duet for T-Mobile; and Hyundai’s History of Evolution ad, which did not run within the Super Bowl broadcast, but racked up views during the game on digital.
There were 6.4 million Tweets mentioning the Super Bowl this year, the most since 2018, where there were 6.5 million mentioning the match-up on game day. That data comes from ListenFirst, which also reported Pepsi was mentioned in 410,100 Tweets on February 13, with 314,705 Tweets using the hashtag #Pepsihalftime specifically.
Men paid more attention to Super Bowl commercials this year than women, according to TVision. Men scored a 126.7 index for “commercial attention,” versus a 120.3 index for women. Viewers age 55+ paid the most attention to ad spots (131.4), while those under age 18 scored 97.4.
Robert Costa joined “CBS Mornings” on Monday. It was his first CBS News appearance since being named CBS News Chief Election and Campaign Correspondent. The former Washington Post political reporter later appeared on “CBS Evening News.”
Weigel Broadcasting announced a March 28 launch date for Story Television Network, offering historical and factual programming. The network will be available on the broadcast television stations of Hearst Television, Marquee Broadcasting, Maranatha Broadcasting, Weigel Broadcasting Co. and other affiliate partners. Series will include the likes of “Biography,” “The Men Who Built America,” and “World War II in HD.”
“Wendy wants you to know she is fine; she is of sound mind and disappointed about falsely circulated statements from an industry she has devoted her life to,” read a statement from Wendy Williams’ lawyer, after Wells Fargo froze the talk show host’s bank accounts. Wells Fargo had asked for a hearing to legally determine if Williams needs a temporary guardianship. Williams, who has been on hiatus from “The Wendy Williams Show” since the summer reportedly because of her Graves’ disease and thyroid conditions, pins the blame for the situation on a former assistant.
