Pop-under Ad: A pop-under ad is a type of web ad, essentially identical to a pop-up ad, except that it loads under a webpage. Marketers often consider a pop-under ad to be less intrusive than a pop-up ad, because webpage visitors often don’t see it until after they’ve clicked to close their current browser session.

Apple announced that its App Store pulled in $2.7 billion in 2016 subscription fees – a whopping 74% uptick from the year before. Netflix, HBO Now, Line, and Tinder were among the year’s most popular purchases. The company also says it paid app developers $20 billion last year, a 40% increase from 2015. Apple’s standard revenue share of any transactions on the App Store is 30% – and app-makers haven’t always been too happy about that. But last year, Apple revised its terms to placate its partners: For subscription services that have been in the App Store for a full year, the fee will drop to 15%.

ADVERTISING
At CES, Verizon’s AOL is announcing the launch of BrandBuilder, a new set of goal-based advertising formats and programs across display, video and mobile. The program is divided into the separate programs Director, Buyer, and Beta. The Director program is aimed at building brand awareness, while the Buyer program is designed to drive direct responses such as email signups and clicks to shop. Beta, meanwhile, is more of an incubator program, designed to let brands work with AOL using the company’s new ad formats. To start, the Beta program includes two new options: DataPerks, described as a “value-exchange,” will offer Verizon subs additional wireless data in exchange for ad engagement – for instance, downloading a coupon. The other Beta option, called Player Up, is a new suite of formats that allows ad creatives to create customized 3-7 second ad experiences. EBay was among the first companies to use the Beta program, and AOL says the company “helped influence” Player Up.
Medium is abandoning its ad product, dubbed Promoted Stories. The product made its beta debut in April, but never rolled out to a wider user base. Created by Twitter Co-Founder Evan Williams in 2012, the self-publication platform seems to be radically rethinking its business model in general. Just this week, Williams announced plans to lay off 50 employees, or one third of the company’s staff. “It’s clear that the broken system is ad-driven media on the internet,” wrote Williams in a blog post.” What’s not entirely clear is how Williams intends to fix it, or what he envisions as the company’s primary revenue generator moving forward.

Twitter acquired a whole lot of live video content in 2016, striking deals with news orgs and, most prominently, sports leagues like the NFL. It looks like Twitter is throwing some golf into the mix as well. Under a new pact, Twitter is now the exclusive free distribution platform of the PGA Tour. The social service will stream select PGA Tour coverage throughout the rest of the 2016-2017 season. All told, Twitter will stream over 70 hours of live competition in 2017, starting with the CareerBuilder Challenge on January 19. The streams will be available at the handle @PGATour and at PGATourLive.twitter.com.
PLATFORMS, APPS + DEVICES
Huh. Anthony Pompliano, a former Snapchat employee who worked as the company’s growth lead for a grand total of three weeks in 2015, just filed a lawsuit against his former company in a Los Angeles court. His allegation: Snapchat has been exaggerating its growth numbers in order to boost its value ahead of a planned IPO. He claims the company fired him after he refused to participate. In a terse statement, Snapchat simply said that the lawsuit “has no merit,” and is “totally made up by a disgruntled former employee.”
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
HTC, maker of the Vive VR headset, announced a new tracking module at CES. The module, a small device that can be integrated into essentially any random accessory, is designed to let developers turn all sorts of objects into VR controllers with full motion tracking capabilities. Called the Vive Tracker, it weighs less than three ounces. Company exec Daniel O’Brien says HTC plans to give thousands of the trackers away to developers over the coming months. The company also announced that it plans to launch a new subscriptions service for Viveport, its VR app store. Viveport President Rickard Steiber argued that, as has been the case with online music services, VR users will eventually gravitate toward subscriptions and away from one-off downloads. Steiber says it already has 1,000 VR titles on its subscription platform, and expects the number to hit 3,000 by the end of 2017.

Vivendi has named Amos Genish, formerly the President and CEO of Telefonica Brasil, as its new Chief Convergence Officer. He’ll be tasked with overseeing convergence strategy between platforms, content and distribution. Vivendi owns Universal Music Group and French entertainment property Canal Plus Group.
