01/31/22: FOX Sports breaks down its plans for the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum

This week sees FOX Sports rev up for the new NASCAR season, offering fans a taste of the year ahead with the inaugural Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum on Feb. 6, with coverage that begins today at 6p with NASCAR Race Hub, and programming throughout the week from the LA Memorial Coliseum. Live Qualifying and pre-race coverage begins at 2:00 PM ET on FOX. Cynopsis Sports asked FOX Sports President of Production & Operations and Executive Producer Brad Zager about this weekend’s race, its challenges and what fans can expect in the year ahead.

Zager on The Clash: Having The Clash evolve from something tied to Daytona to a standalone event like this creates a different type of buzz for the start of the season. It’s always something the fans look forward to because it means that the season is here, but turning it into its own marquee event really opens up possibilities for the future on how NASCAR begins its season.

On thoughts when he first heard that the Coliseum would be hosting: Excitement … I loved everything about it! Right when you hear about it for the first time, you start imagining what it will look like and how it will work. Then you start thinking about how you can cover it in a different way than a normal NASCAR race and what we can bring to it in this setting for a race that we can’t in a usual NASCAR venue.

On potential challenges: To be honest, we didn’t look at anything as a challenge, only opportunity. We started talking immediately about how The Coliseum changes our coverage and what we need to prioritize for this event. What do we want the viewers to see when they turn it on, how do we make sure that we set up in a way that it never feels like any other race no matter what part of the race you are watching? I think our producer Barry Landis and director Artie Kempner have a great plan to make sure this broadcast is as unique to the viewers at home as it will be for the drivers racing in it.

On the season ahead: We can’t wait to get going this season, and we think that The Clash moving to Los Angeles is a great way to kick this off before we head down to Daytona. We have a brand-new graphics package launching this season that we are excited about showing off, and we are pushing forward with new tech to cover the races. The sport has given us some great stories to cover this season with the Next Gen Car, year two of Bristol Dirt (this year in prime time) and an amazing group of drivers that keep every race competitive and exciting to watch.

PROGRAMMING

Meanwhile, FOX Sports revealed the network’s broadcaster lineup for the 2022 NASCAR season, with play-by-play announcer Mike Joy joining analyst Clint Bowyer and Tony Stewart this year. They will be see Larry McReynolds partner with the trio from the FOX Sports studios in Charlotte. Veteran reporters Jamie Little, Vince Welch and Regan Smith cover the race from pit road. Shannon Spake hosts NASCAR RACEDAY prerace studio coverage with analysis from McReynolds and Jamie McMurray. Chris Myers anchors prerace coverage from the track alongside Bowyer. Tom Rinaldi also will contribute to FOX NASCAR prerace coverage. FOX Deportes serves up announcer Tony Rivera providing play-by-play and Jessi Losada and Giselle Zarur delivering analysis.

Platinum-selling recording artist Machine Gun Kelly was tapped to headline the entertainment for the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Game this Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The artist will take the stage during the second intermission presented by Ticketmaster and be televised live as part of the national broadcast of the NHL All-Star Game on ABC in the US and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada at 3p.

NBCUniversal announced plans to present 230+ hours of Paralympic Winter Games programming, including a record 120 hours of television coverage, for the 2022 Paralympics from Beijing, running March 4-13, across NBC, Peacock, USA Network, Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. The company also announced that the event will also receive “unprecedented” promotion and advertising support. NBCU’s coverage, which will once again be presented by Toyota, will feature a record 120 hours of television coverage; seven total hours on the NBC broadcast network, including three in primetime, a first for a Winter Paralympics; coverage of all events and competition on Peacock; live coverage of the Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony on USA Network; and comprehensive live streaming coverage on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.

ESPN is tipping off its WNBA free agency coverage tomorrow with a live WNBA Free Agency Special Presented by Google at 5p on ESPN2. Host LaChina Robinson will be joined by Rebecca Lobo, Carolyn Peck and Holly Rowe. The foursome will recap the storylines of the day and offer perspective on how various moves could impact each team and the league overall.

ESPN announced that today will see the company’s longest-tenured reporter, Mark Schwartz retire. He has held the role for 32 years.

NFL Network reporter Kim Jones announced that she is leaving the channel after a 10-year run with the outlet. Jones joined NFL Network in 2012 after seven years as a reporter for YES Network.

The NFL will kick off Pro Bowl Week festivities on Wednesday, February 2nd with the NFL green wetlands restoration project and Pro Bowl legacy press conference. Later in the week, the NFL will host its Pro Bowl Community Day, where NFL Legends will partake in hands-on volunteering activities alongside local youth.

The World Surf League announced a new partnership with Californian craft brewer Firestone Walker Brewing Company, making 805 Beer the official craft beer of WSL North America. “We are stoked to have Firestone Walker Brewing Company join the WSL family,” said Cherie Cohen, WSL Chief Revenue Officer. “805 Beer is born and brewed in California’s central coast, and has been supporting the surf community since their inception. This dynamic partnership includes creative storytelling and content throughout the Championship Tour, VANS US Open of Surfing, and the WSL Longboard Championships. The upcoming live action series based on the game Halo delivered a new two-minute trailer that premiered during halftime at the AFC Championship Game. Halo: The Series will officially debut on March 24, streaming on Paramount Plus.

DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Legends announced the acquisition of 4FRONT, a global data and analytics, innovation, and digital media agency. 4FRONT will retain its company name and operate as part of Legends Global Technology Solutions division. Co-founders Josh Kritzler and Dan Migala will now oversee Legends Global Technology Solutions. Kritzler will serve as Co-President and Chief Operating Officer and Migala will be Co-President and Chief Revenue Officer of the division.

The San Francisco 49ers and Vivid Seats announced an expansion and extension to their current partnership. Vivid Seats has been the Official Fan Travel Experience Partner of the San Francisco 49ers since 2017 and will continue to serve in that capacity. With the expanded partnership, Vivid Seats will now also serve as the Official Gameday Fan Experience Partner of the team, providing enhanced gameday fan experiences. Starting next season, Vivid Seats will be the Presenting Partner of Golden Opportunities – the 49ers’ game day experience platform – which will offer 49ers fans the chance to purchase “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunities at Levi’s Stadium.

ESPORTS

GameSquare Esports, owners of Complexity Gaming, forged a deal with NFT platform Arterra and will collaborate with the company on the platform’s official launch. With the deal, ARterra becomes the official NFT marketplace of Complexity Gaming as well as the organisation’s exclusive NFT platform.

Esports Entertainment Group named Stuart Tilly as the Company’s Chief Operating Officer. Tilly has more than 15 years of experience in the online gaming industry, having previously trained and qualified as a Solicitor and had held the role of the Company’s Chief Legal Officer prior to taking on his new position.

KRAFTON and PUBG Esports mapped out plans for the 2022 PUBG: Battlegrounds competitive ecosystem and will offer more than $740,000 in prize pools across four events. The slate includes the two more outings for the PUBG Continental Series as well as two ESL PUBG Masters events. PCS 6 will take place in April, with PCS 7 scheduled for September. Meanwhile, the PUBG Nations Cup returns in June.
