PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Two half-hour comedy pilots, Best Intentions and Ride or Die, got the green light from Pop. Best Intentions, from American Pie writer Adam Herz, A+E Studios and Propagate, follows a teenager, his single father, who happens to be the guidance counselor at his high school, and the women of their fumbling affections. Ride or Die, from writer Matt McConkey (Paramount Network’s Heathers), The Gotham Group and Nomadic Pictures, centers on a down-on-her-luck outsider who teams up with a true-crime buff to find the killer after an elite spin studio is shaken by a murder.
Busy times at Syfy, which landed rights to develop a Chucky TV series centered on the possessed freckle-faced doll from the Child’s Play horror films. Project hails from the film franchise’s creator/writer Don Mancini, producer David Kirschner and writer/producer Nick Antosca (Hulu’s The Act). Mancini will write the adaptation for Universal Cable Productions. Syfy also ordered two new scripted pilots: father-son artificial intelligence drama Cipher (working title), from Allison Miller (Strange Angel) and Rough House Pictures (Halloween); and dark comedy (Future) Cult Classic (working title), from Shay Hatten (Ballerina) and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video. The pilots are produced by Universal Cable Productions.
CNBC beginning in May will unleash a slate of new and returning originals focused on real estate during primetime. The network has green-lit Listing Impossible, which follows real-estate agent Aaron Kirman and his team as they work to sell multimillion-dollar estates that have been languishing on the market; Cash Pad (working title), a home reno series in which Bachelorette couple-turned-home flippers JoJo Fletcher and Jordan Rodgers transform ordinary homes into short-term rental properties; and Five Day Business Flip (working title), featuring a husband-and-wife design duo who remodel small businesses. In addition, Simonsen Says (working title), featuring broker Lisa Simonsen, has been added to the development slate and The Deed: Chicago, which follows real-estate mogul Sean Conlon, will return for a second season.
Optomen Productions, an All3Media company headed by Maria Silver, entered a co-production partnership with British production company Chalkboard TV, headed by Mike Benson. The two will partner on original and UK formats to pitch directly to U.S. broadcasters.
Blue Ant International commissioned a second season of Architect Films-produced baking competition Best Cake Wins, currently in production in Toronto, Canada for BYUtv.
Writer/producer Anna Winger launched new independent production company, Studio Airlift, in Berlin. Studio Airlift has optioned two books slated for series: Deborah Feldman’s Unorthodox, a story of emancipation to be set in NYC and Berlin; and Hennie van Vuuren’s thriller Apartheid, Guns and Money.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Inspired by the untold rise of iconic music and dance program Soul Train, BET Networks original series American Soul debuts Tuesday, February 5, at 9p. Series stars Sinqua Walls (Power, The Breaks), singer Kelly Price, Jason Dirden (Greenleaf) and Iantha Richardson (This Is Us) in a story of battles with record labels, off-camera drama and the struggle for substantial funding as thirstysomething Don Cornelius sacrifices all that he loves to follow his dream.
Project Runway returns to its original home, Bravo, with a 90-minute ep on March 14 at 8p. After 11 seasons on Lifetime, the newest iteration of the series features supermodel Karlie Kloss as host with former Project Runway champ and fashion designer Christian Siriano as mentor. Elle Editor-in-Chief Nina Garcia returns as a judge along with fashion designer Brandon Maxwell and former Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief Elaine Welteroth. Original production company Magical Elves is producing alongside new Weinstein Co. owner Lantern Entertainment.
COMING UP
Verizon is producing a 30-minute doc focusing on the backstories of the first responders featured in its Super Bowl Campaign. Directed by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) with Gary Sinise as the narrator, it will air on CBS Sports Monday, February 4, at 9p.
TCA DISPATCH
The impact of the #MeToo movement in television was parsed during NBC’s “Women of Drama” panel yesterday as the Television Critics Assn. winter tour got under way. “Last season, when everything was coming out, we had a lot of male guest stars actually ask us questions, which we found interesting and nice,” Good Girls star Retta said. Referencing an on-set This Is Us meeting to discuss inappropriate behavior, actor Susan Kelechi Watson noted, “There was a consciousness about that that I found really respectful.”
“It’s a nice comparison, but I think our show is much better,” Abby exec producer Josh Malmuth joked about the new midseason NBC show when asked if it was created to fill shoes left by Cheers decades ago. Added exec producer Mike Schur, “There is no way to beat that show. If you can get in the conversation with that show, it’s a dream come true.”
DIGITAL DATA
After nearly a seven-month blackout, Dish Network is suing Univision for patent violations as the companies’ distribution standoff rages on. Dish filed a federal lawsuit in Delaware alleging Univision’s products, including subscription streaming service Univision Now, the Univision app and Univision Deportes, violate four Dish-owned patents covering adaptive bit-rate streaming. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction barring Univision from using the patents plus unspecified monetary damages.
SHORT FORM
Canvas Media Studios launched short form series Limelight on Yarn, the chat-based fiction app that targets teens and twentysomethings. Limelight, which stars influencer Chloe Lukasiak (Lifetime’s Dance Moms), received more than 2 million views the first month. Canvas Media Studios CEO David Tochterman, exec producer of the project, will moderate the panel “Finding the Right Platforms for Premium Short Form Video” at the Cynopsis Short Form Video Fest, March 6 in NYC. For details and to register, go here. Among other content creators producing series for Yarn are AMC Networks, Drama Fever, Syfy and Warner Bros.
KIDS NEWS

Series is set to air on Disney Junior and other territories in 2020. Playmates Toys has acquired worldwide toy rights, excluding China.
Independent global kids content distributor Jetpack Distribution acquired international distribution rights for four family films: A Horse Called Wish, Camp Getaway, Inspector Sunshine and The House on Seahorse Bay from UK-based Perplexia Pictures.
