Which network is the best to work with? NPACT, the trade association for non-fiction production companies, announced the results of its annual survey of producers of unscripted, documentary and reality series ranking their favorite (and least favorite) networks and streaming/digital platforms across 11 categories. HBO emerged as the favorite overall, with Netflix, Nat Geo WILD, Oxygen, ID, CNN, History, USA, Bravo and A&E rounding out the top 10. Most improved honors went to Netflix, followed by Travel Channel and Nat Geo.
Customer brand loyalty has increased on average 20% from 2019 to 2020 across 85 categories, according to Brand Keys’ 25th annual Customer Loyalty Engagement Index. “Analysts, consulting firms, and research practices that declared brand loyalty dead are talking about a consumer loyalty model that expired in 1990,” said Robert Passikoff, President of Brand Keys. “But loyalty didn’t die. Rather, it has evolved in a more complex marketplace with more sophisticated consumers.” Media companies that made the top 20 list include WhatApp (+25%), Amazon (+23%), MSNBC (+21%), Apple (+17%), Fox News (+16%) and Google (+14%).
People spent 33% more time watching video in 2019 than they did the year prior, according to Parks Associates. Consumers spend an average 20 hours of week watching video on TV sets, according to the “360 View: Digital Media and Connected Consumer” report, versus about four hours on a mobile phone. “Understanding consumers is key to driving acquisition and minimizing churn among video services,” said Steve Nason, senior analyst at Parks Associates. “Different demographics show markedly different attitudes and preferences.” While Parks reports half of US broadband households subscribe to Netflix, one quarter of households said local broadcast channels were their most enjoyed type of channel.
ION Media announced the purchase of KMCC-TV in Las Vegas from Entravision Communications Corporation. The acquisition will add nearly one million TV households to ION’s broadcast footprint, giving the company 71 full-power stations in 62 of the largest US markets. “Over-the-air broadcasting has grown to be the primary source of live linear television for nearly a quarter of the US population,” said Brandon Burgess, Chairman and CEO of ION Media. “We serve this demand by offering ION content via over-the-air broadcast spectrum in high growth markets like Las Vegas.”
Yahoo Finance has launched 24 hours daily of linear news programming on Verizon Fios. In addition to eight hours of bell-to-bell weekday stock market coverage will be shows like weekly series Influencers with Andy Serwer; Breakouts, featuring start-up leaders; and My Three Cents, about the role money plays in the everyday lives of newsmakers. Relevant programs from across the Verizon Media ecosystem, including Autoblog, Engadget and TechCrunch, will also air on the channel.
Tumblr has launched a new campaign, #Issues2020, in partnership with organizations like When We All Vote, Black Girls Vote and more. The campaign, which aims to provide a place for people on Tumblr to discuss topics like reproductive justice, mass incarceration, immigration, climate change, gun control and more, kicked off yesterday; the first Issue Time will go live mid-February with Black Girls Vote.
