Amazon positioned itself as a potentially serious competitor for Google’s ad business with the confirmation of its agreement to acquire the ad server operation of bankrupt ad tech firm Sizmek. Once the deal closes, Sizmek Ad Server and Sizmek DCO will operate separately from Amazon Advertising for the time being, said the company on its website. “Sizmek and Amazon Advertising have many mutual customers, so we know how valued these proven solutions are to their customer base,” said Amazon. “Sizmek has been searching for a buyer for Sizmek Ad Server and Sizmek DCO, and we are both committed to continuing serving their customers at the high standards they’ve come to expect.” Sizmek declared bankruptcy in March.
 
Google is being investigated by the US Justice Department for possible anti-trust violations regarding search and advertising policies, reports the Wall Street Journal, based on complaints about its practices forwarded to the Justice Department by the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC closed an investigation into Google in 2013 after the company said it would make changes to its search practices.
 
Foursquare has agreed to buy location-based measurement company Placed from Snap Inc. Placed Attribution will become Foursquare’s flagship measurement product, and Placed founder and CEO David Shim is joining Foursquare as president. Snap acquired Placed in 2017; its partnership with Foursquare, which powers Snap Geofilters, will continue.

Search engine Reelgood took samples from its most active users and found that 91% of Hulu subscribers, 77% of Prime Video subscribers and 51% of Netflix subscribers still pay for cable television. One reason older viewers went back to, or stayed true to, cable TV is that “switching between different streaming services, to see where a particular show or movie is available proved very frustrating and time-consuming for them,” reported Reelgood.
 
Tinder announced a new version of Boost. The upgrade, Super Boost, will be offered to Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold premium subscribers, and gives users looking for love (or whatever) the chance to be seen by up to 100 times more potential matches. That’s versus Boost, which can increase views by up to 10 times. The dating app is testing different price points.
 
AT&T added Locast’s interactive app on its DIRECTV and U-verse platforms. Locast, a public service application that offers viewers with broadband-connected receivers access to their local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and other broadcast stations streamed via the Internet, is currently available to 27 million users in nine markets: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Washington, Houston, Boston, Denver and Baltimore. “AT&T continues to offer consumers new ways to access the video content they want. We believe Locast’s public service offering will make sense for many of them,” said the company, which will continue to offer its complimentary Local Channel Connector service when a local station is otherwise unavailable.
