Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, September 5, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

NBC Universal has found a digital distribution outlet more to its liking. NBCU reached a wide-ranging distribution agreement with Amazon.com to make a variety of broadcast shows, cable shows and movies available for purchase on its Unbox platform including several packaging options and incentive plans. NBC has been dabbling with Unbox for the past year, but the new agreement allows Amazon to offer full seasons of hits including 30 Rock, The Office, Heroes and the 3 Law & Order incarnations at volume discounts, with new episodes to be added the day after they premiere this fall. The pilots of new shows Bionic Woman, Chuck, Journeyman and Life will also be available for free from September 10, then for $1.99 per episode following their premiers. NBCU Digital Distribution President Jean-Briac Perrette praised Amazon’s user interface, flexibility and commitment to copyright protection in an interview.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~
 

ESPN360.com completed a relaunch featuring an entirely new look and updated user interface enabling broadband users to view up to 10 simultaneous events at once. The next generation player features DVR-like controls and improved video quality delivering 640 x 360 images displayed in either 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratios. ESPN is hoping the new features and a revamped line up of more than 2,000 live sporting events in the next 12 months (including NBA, NASCAR, College Football and College Basketball) will convince more broadband providers to carry the service. So far AT&T, Verizon, Charter and Mediacom are the only major carriers paying ESPN for the privilege of offering it to their subscribers, giving about 17 million homes access.  
 
The unpopular iVillage Live will return to NBC O&Os on Monday, September 17 with the new name, look and focus. The reworked talk show will try to leverage iVillage.com’s content and user base, inviting contributors regularly on the show and integrating interactive elements such as live chat and polls. In the Loop with iVillage will be taped live in front of a studio audience at NBC’s Chicago station WMAQ, this time around with a trio of new hosts: Actress and comedian Kim Coles, season one The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic and TV personality Ereka Vetrini. It airs daily at noon ET/PT and at 11 a.m. CT.
 
Cartoon Network‘s New Media division launched Master Control, a 15-week initiative enabling kids to vote on their favorite shows and meet other fans on CartoonNetwork.com. Young users can join one of three Master Control teams, each of which have home pages that serve as virtual hangouts for the team. The network will roll out various team-themed activities and extras throughout the season, culminating in a tournament style competition.
 
Baby boomer-targeted AmericanLife TV Network launched a video on demand service on September 3 in partnership with on demand content aggregator TVN Entertainment. The no-additional-charge service will offer four programming categories: Classic TV, Cooking & Living TV, Caring & Sharing TV and Lifestyle TV.
 
WCSN
announced a deal with FOXSports.com to provide Olympic-style and World Championship event video content to sports fans on MSN.FOXSports.com and within the MSN Video platform. WCSN will launch a branded channel users can link to from FoxSports.com’s “More” category, with additional content appearing in the “Olympic Sports” section. Coverage will include interviews and behind-the-scenes looks at the Beijing Olympics as well as streaming of cycling, gymnastics and alpine skiing events. WCSN.com also announced it is offering free live coverage of the World Gymnastics Championships this week.
 
Entertainment ‘zine site OK-Magazine.com relaunched with new exclusive content including continuously updated breaking news, celebrity updates, photo galleries, videos, reviews, blogs and numerous interactive features.
 
CBS Corp.’s collegiate sports site CSTV.com reported a unique user base of 1.2 million as of College Football kickoff Saturday on Sept 1st, a 27% year-to-year increase. The overall CSTV network, which includes 215 official collegiate websites, recorded 8.2 million page views last Saturday.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

The New York Television Film Festival will introduce a Fellowship Program at this year’s fest, providing four recipients with mentoring from some of TV’s most influential executive producers. Michael Davies, Tom Fontana, Mitchell Hurwitz and Phil Rosenthal will hand select the pilot makers they would most like to work with, based on work submitted in the festival’s Independent Pilot Competition. The lucky winners will be announced at the Closing Night Ceremony on September 9.
 
Mobile content publisher Airborne Entertainment and digital distribution company Iris Distribution struck a partnership to offer mobile subscribers a line up of digital music tracks, wallpapers and music videos. The content is sourced from several independent labels featuring artists including Kid Koala, Amon Tobin and Bad Brains.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

After throwing in the towel on the music download business, Sony is gearing up to challenge Apple and Microsoft with a new video download service tied to the PlayStation 3, the PSP handheld and its line of Bravia HD TV’s, reports the Wall Street Journal. Although the article provides few details, Sony’s differentiator appears to be the ability to offer shows and movies in HD.
 
The McClatchy Co.
is retaining its 14.4% stake in online jobs site Careerbuilder.com amid declining classified revenues at its newspapers. Gannett and Tribune each maintain a 40.8% stake in the site. 
 
Netherlands-based KPN Global Carrier Services has teamed up with Narrowstep to provide a wholesale Internet TV offering to mobile and fixed network operators, ISPs and content parties. KPN will offer a bundled service to its customers that will enable them to monetize video content and “de-commoditize” bandwidth sales. The new service will launch in October 2007, and as part of the deal, Narrowstep will use KPN’s global network infrastructure to extend its Content Distribution Network.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Yahoo acquired online ad network BlueLithium for $300 million in cash. BlueLithium specializes in targeting based on users’ interests, custom segmentation and extending frequency against a marketer’s targeted audience. 
 
Video advertising company VideoEgg raised an additional $15 million in funding according to TechCrunch, led by Focus Ventures with existing investors WPP, Maveron and August Capital also contributing.  The company has raised more than $32 million since its founding in 2005. VideoEgg recently struck a deal with Facebook to sell ads directly into applications developed for the social networking site.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~
 

Peer-to-peer downloading still dominates internet traffic according to the preliminary results of a survey conducted by Germany-based ipouque, accounting for somewhere between 50-90% of the bits delivered on the world wide web. BitTorrent leads all P2P providers serving 50-75% of the global streams. A survey of BitTorrent shared files in October of last year found audio music to be the most popular genre (accounting for 22.3% of all downloads), followed by movies (21.24%), adult video (15.04%) and TV series (11.25%).
 
Grassroots initiative Help! Change TV complained that Nielsen’s decision to produce Hispanic TV ratings through its integrated National People Meter sample fails to address the issue of Nativity (that is, it fails to account for whether or not the audience is U.S. or foreign born.)
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CraveOnline hired three new sales executives in the U.S. Noreen Van Der Waag will be joining as Account Executive for the Western Region, based in CraveOnline’s Los Angeles headquarters. Lauren Jaramillo will be AE for the Northwest Territory, based in the company’s new San Francisco office. Cory Rotkel will be an Eastern Region AE, based in New York. All three will report to David Cohn, SVP/Advertising Sales.

AvatarLabs, the California-based motion graphics and online design studio for the entertainment industry, employed Brendan Lundeen as Director/Production. Brendan will manage web and interactive marketing for the company’s client base.

Digital media becomes really intriguing when entirely new entertainment formats are created. Sort of The Sims meets Ugly Betty, Supple is a new spoken dialogue-driven episodic game that combines elements of the sitcom with virtual world playability. Players are immersed in the offices of “Supple Magazine” (as in Single Urban Professional Women) as Arin Costello, a young woman who most use her charms to get ahead in the world of high fashion publishing. Flirt with co-workers and stab the boss in the back without suffering the consequences in real life! The game goes for $19.95, but a free 60-minute trial is available on the site.
