Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Microsoft dished out an impressive $7.8 billion for Nokia’s Device and Services as well as the licensing of its patent portfolio, both companies announced on Tuesday. Nokia and Microsoft have been a pair since 2011, when the companies created Windows system smartphones like Lumia 920 and Lumia 1020.
In Other Words: Microsoft wants to increase its share (and profit) in the mobile device market, and Nokia likes the financial boost and the opportunity for reinvention. However, there’s no consensus on how good an idea this is: After the announcement, Microsoft shares dropped 5 percent and Nokia shares increased by 40 percent.
As Netflix recently promised, more original humor is on the way with comedian Russell Peter’s stand-up routine Notorious and docu-series Russell Peters vs. The World. Netflix will exclusively premiere the stand-up routine and four-part documentary on Oct. 14.
Yahoo has stopped providing news and community services in China, an announcement on China’s Yahoo homepage said on Tuesday. The company has already discontinued email services in the country, and says the latest exit is about “adjusting its operations strategy.”
New York Fashion Week, which runs from September 5-13, will be more of a digital event than ever before. Here’s what’s planned:
- The mercedes benz fashion week site will be live streaming 59 shows
- Made Fashion Week’s website will be streaming 15 fashion shows.
- Style network will also include live streaming of runway shows.
- Google+ created its own page for the event, and will feature Google hangouts with designers like Rachel Zoe.
- DailyCandy will have designer sketches, runway playlists and coverage on its Instagram handle.
- Oscar de la Renta will live-pin its show
- iVillage will include coverage with Pinterest boards inspired by the week’s designers.
Use hashtags like #nyfw and #mbfw to find conversations about the event on Twitter.
Vimeo, the video streaming site, wants to make a deal with Toronto International Film Festival filmmakers. Those who accept a $10,000 cash advance will have their video distributed on Vimeo for 30 days or until the company makes its money back. If the filmmaker chooses to continue streaming her film after the initial period, she’ll snag 90 percent of the profits made. The festival runs from September 5-15th.
In Other Words: This is Vimeo’s play to grab a spot in the third party video streaming market by becoming a major independent film distributor.
There’s cord cutting, cord thinning and now a term called cord cheating that’s pushing pay-TV on-demand services to the wayside. Digitalsmiths Q2 Video Discovery Trends Report defines the term as consumers who are opting for VOD offerings through services like Netflix, Hulu and Redbox. The study found that 73.3 percent of pay-TV customers have never purchased on-demand content from the provider, 35 percent have a subscription to an over-the-top service and 22.1 percent regularly use a third party rental service. The survey used data culled from more than 1800 consumers, from April to June.
Microsoft’s latest Nokia purchase has upped previous Nokia CEO Stephen Elop as Microsoft’s new Executive Vice President of Devices and Services.

Yahoo may want to savor its July victory over Google just a little longer, because it’s now facing a sales dip in homepage ads, according to the latest Macquarie Securities Q3 ad-tracking report. Yahoo’s front-page ad sales dropped to 28 percent from 35 percent last year, and sales made with click-through of those advertisements fell to its lowest level in two years at 39 percent from the 74 percent in 2012.
In other words: Even a new homepage design and Yahoo management overhaul may not be enough to boost ad sales for the company.
A flood of new technology is hitting the markets over the next few months, and companies continue to release sneak peaks, which we are dutifully passing on to you:
- Apple is expected to release two new iPhones this year, the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. The iPhone 5C is supposedly a budget-friendly version with the same design of the iPhone 5 but with different hardware. The new iPhone will have different colors and will, of course, be meant to phase out older versions. Yesterday, Apple finally confirmed the 10AM PST Sept. 10 iPhone announcement, which will take place on Apple’s campus in California. The new iPhones are rumored to be released the week following the event.
- Mobile software company ACCESS is pairing up with Vestel TV to provide software called ACCESS’ NetFront Living Connect that allows DVR recorded TV programming to be streamed on mobile devices. The company will demonstrate the new technology at IFA Berlin, which runs from September 6th to 11th.
- HTC announced a new Bluetooth subwoofer BoomBase for phones, the HTC One in the “Vivid Blue” color, and the new Desire 300 and Desire 601 smartphones. The subwoofer is part of HTC’s new accessory store, launching in October. Vivid Blue HTC One will be released at the end of 2013, and the upgraded HTC Desire models will roll out in October.
- Nokia could be entering the “phablet” market with the possible six-inch Lumia 1520. Evleaks published an image of a larger than usual home screen, which suggests that Nokia’s new gadget will be a tablet and phone crossover. Nokia has not confirmed the leaked images.
- The PlayStation 4 is one of the big all-in-one entertainment systems to be released this fall. Digital Spy says the new system includes a console and the controllers, the latter of which has a button that share screen shots and videos. The PlayStation 4 will be released on Nov. 15.

Prada’s Miu Miu has just released another short film as part of The Women’s Tales online series, the company’s elegant branding campaign. The new short, titled Le Donne della Vucciria, focuses on stories of Sicilian dressmakers, and is in the same mood and tone as the other five films in the series. This fifth installment, The Door, was so well-regarded that it premiered as part of the Venice Film Festival Giornate degil Autori on August 29. Check it out at www.Cynopsis.com. All six shorts can be watched through the Miu Miu site and YouTube channel.
