Amazon jumped into the a la carte movie and TV show rental business with its Amazon Video On Demand service 4 years ago. But despite aggressive pricing and several device integrations, digital video content sales has never been a big moneymaker for the Seattle-based company. Amazon is now out to launch a subscription-based video service – a la Netflix – and is in talks with NBCU, Time Warner, Viacom and others to shore up programming rights, reports the WSJ. The company is proposing to bundle the service with its Amazon Prime premium service, which offers free shipping on all items for $79/year, as away to launch it to an existing pool of subscribers.
Microsoft is jacking prices for its Xbox Live broadband “gold” service from Nov. 1, about the time Sony introduces its premium $50/year PlayStation Plus service. Xbox Live allows console users to access game updates, customization features and video content offerings such as the ESPN 3 broadband channel added in June. New pricing will run $9.99/mo., $24.99/3 months and $59.99/year. Subscriptions to the Hulu Plus offering ($10/mo.) are extra.
We’ll find out for sure tomorrow, but Bloomberg is reporting that the new iOS-based Apple TV set-top will include access to the Netflix “Watch Instantly” service in addition to cheaper a la carte TV show episodes, despite the fact that it competes with iTunes downloads.
Logo‘s stand-alone, travel-themed site, is soliciting user votes for its second annual TripOut Gay Travel Awards to honor the hottest LGBT travel destinations. Last year’s inaugural awards gave the site a significant audience boost, according to MTV Networks, helping increasing ave. monthly uniques and ave. monthly video streams to the Logo constellation by 11% and 111%, respectively.
Well-funded start-up LightSquared plans to compete with Clearwire in the wireless 4G data market, per Bloomberg, hoping to enter up to nine U.S. markets including Chicago and Dallas. Backed by Philip Falcone’s Harbinger Capital Partners, the company plans to sell resell capacity on its network to MSOs, consumer electronics firms and technology companies to spur demand for high-speed mobile devices.
Buy and sell-side internet video ad platform adapt.tv has introduced a new set of tools built to help brand marketers increase their ROI and comfort level in the online video space. Because adapt.tv is built upon an open source platform, the company has been able to adopt third-party technology to solve a number of issues associated with its video ad exchange launched in Feb. Its new Brand Impact offering includes:
- A solution from Affine Systems that analyzes in-stream content frame-by-frame to weed out objectionable content
- Vizu‘s Ad Catalyst enables real-time measurement and optimization
- Targeting and audience verification tools from eXelate, Lotame and TARGUSinfo
Adapt.tv’s platform, currently utilized by 1400 sites and 400 publishers, has so far racked up over 300 million ad views in the U.S. and close to 1 billion globally – largely due to the transparency it has helped bring to the marketplace, according to adapt.tv President Toby Gabriner.
Yahoo and Dex One are expanding their partnership, allowing businesses which advertise on Dex One’s DexKnows search site to have their online listings appear in Yahoo! Local search results. The integration, expanding an arrangement that covered the 14-state Qwest region where Dex One publishes the phone directory, broadens the reach of Dex One’s local advertiser network, which directs users to detailed information on local businesses.
Samsung, the world’s top TV manufacturer, is doing its part to whip up developer’s interest in its TV apps platform, introducing a new developer’s kit at an event at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, CA yesterday and launching a contest that is offering up to $500k in prizes for new apps. The Samsung Apps store currently offers some 200 apps from 120 countries – triple the number available 5 months ago. New content-related apps include ESPN Next Level and the subscription-based Hulu Plus.
Thanks to the continuous roll out of smartphones, tablets and other devices, mobile content revenues will increase three fold in the next 5 years, from less than $1.15 billion in 2009 to more than $3.53 billion in 2014, according to new eMarketer estimates – a compound annual growth rate of nearly 20%. The fastest growth will come from mobile music, which starts from the smallest base and will move from ringtones to cloud-based subscription music services such as Zune.
WiMax wireless broadband provider Clearwire unveiled a commitment-free new pay-as-you-go option for all 49 markets it covers. Dubbed Rover, the service is priced at $5/day, $20/week or $50/mo. for unlimited 4G network usage. In order to connect with your laptop, you must buy the round Rover Puck for $150 or the Mac OS compatible Rover Stick for $100.
Roku announced it is reducing the already industry-lowest prices of its digital set-top boxes. The entry level Roku SD now goes for $60, the Roku HD is $70 and the Roku HD-XR is $100. All 3 ship with Wi-Fi capability, with the latter models supporting HD streaming. Roku also announced plans to support 1080p streaming on its most expensive HD-XR box later this year via a free software update.
Social news site Digg has hired former Amazon GM of Consumer Payments Matt Williams as its new CEO, per TechCruch. He replaces Jay Adelson who departed this spring, leaving founder Kevin Rose to run the company.
The NHL has named NFL programmer Charles Coplin to the new position of EVP/Content. He is charged with integrating all league media and content (including NHL.com); overseeing programming and production for NHL Network; managing all TV broadcast and rights-holder relationships; and directing the NHL Digital Studios and original broadband productions.
Amy DiTullio will join HarpersBazaar.com as Site Director overseeing and developing programming for the site. She starts on Sept. 27 and will report to Anna Pezik, Hearst Magazines Digital Media’s Fashion and Beauty Sites Director.
Media-based ad planning firm Invision hired Kami Ragsdale as CFO, reporting to CEO Lynda Clarizio. Kami formerly served as SVP/Financial Planning and Analysis at AOL.
London-based social gaming company Zattikka has hired Jim McDonagh as External Producer. Jim has developed games for Ubisoft, Eidos Interactive and The Creative Assembly, among other companies.
When Facebook introduced its location-based Facebook Places service earlier this month it also promised to release an API to allow third party developers to incorporate the technology and many wondered what the killer app might be to marry location services with social networking. How about dating? Location-based mobile dating service MeetMoi has beat others to the punch to be the first to allow its users to check-in using Facebook Places. Currently available for Android and awaiting for approval for the iPhone, MeetMoi’s NOW app allows you to create a profile and automatically update your location on the fly so that eligible singles nearby can look for compatible users near where they are. (You can even set it to alert you when a match is in the area.) It’s like having a professional matchmaker, or shadkhen in Yiddish, constantly on the prowl for you. Oy Vey.
