Twitter’s overhauling its mobile app. It started today, with a small update to its look, in connection with the release of Apple iOS 7. A more comprehensive revamp is expected soon after, says All Things D. Among other upgrades, any multimedia will now appear automatically, instead of through an attached link.
In Other Words: The biggest part of the refresh will be a TV-trending conversation stream, to take advantage of recent acquisitions – and conversation trackers – Trendrr and MoPub.
Microsoft announced a $40 billion share buyback program yesterday. The move comes after an already big year for the tech giant, with a management reorganization, CEO Steve Ballmer’s retirement, and the purchase of Nokia.
In other words: Microsoft is investing in its own stock in order to stay competitive with Yahoo and Apple; the two companies launched similar buyback programs in the past year.
AOL On’s latest original docu-series Flat Out is now available on www.FlatOutDK.com and the AOL On app. The 10-episode series coproduced with NASCAR Productions, follows the life of Dylan Kwasniewski, the youngest driver ever win the K&N Pro Series West Championship.
Original Star Trek TV show actor George Takei is hosting a new YouTube tech news web series called Takei’s Take. Series sponsor AARP ordered 12 eps of the four-minute videos. Takei currently has a formidable digital presence, with 4.56 million Facebook fans and 817,000 Twitter followers.
Madonna thinks piracy is ok… if it promotes freedom of speech. The pop star is releasing a short film called Secretprojectrevolution on piracy platform BitTorrent as part of her Madonna’s Art For Freedom internet project. BitTorrent users can access the short film on Sept. 24.
Yahoo-ABC News Network is top of the heap as August’s most visited online news source, with 2.6 billion views and 82.2 million unique visitors. CNN placed second with 1.8 billion page views, and Huff Post Media Group News with 1.4 billion views snagged third. Last month, Yahoo-ABC News Network launched two web video series: World News: Beyond the Headline, Nightline Fix, and live-streamed coverage of the 50th anniversary of MLK Jr’s “I Have a Dream Speech.”
Bing is the latest to join the logo redesign trend along with Yahoo, YouTube and Google. The new logo is a flat yellow, specifically showcasing a lowercase angular letter “b.”
In Other Words: The Verge reports the new logo is part of Bing’s complete renovation of the search engine’s design and features – in order to keep up with rival Google.

Online craft marketplace Etsy.com launched Pages on Tuesday, to allow brands to recommend the site’s products while simultaneously promoting its own product through a Pinterest-like page set-up. Babble, Martha Stewart Weddings and SwissMiss are already using Pages.
Facebook‘s auto play video ads have been spotted in newsfeeds on Android devices this week. Facebook first announced auto play ads in April, and the tests indicate that it’s likely Facebook will roll out the technology sooner rather than later.
YouTube is experimenting with Chromecast so that viewers can use it to send videos from third-party sites from their browser to their TV. YouTube acknowledged the testing.
…Another video streaming service – Amazon Instant – updated its app to include AirPlay, so it can be used on Apple TV devices.
In other words: AppleTV has yet to include the actual Amazon Instant app – perhaps because Amazon is rumored to be creating its own over-the-top device, according to Tech Crunch. Google’s Chromecast doesn’t have an Amazon Instant app available, either.
FremantleMedia North America hired Gayle Gilman as the new Executive Vice President of Digital Content. Gilman was previously Senior Vice President of Original Productions Entertainment Networks, and was a co-executive producer of Emmy nominated Ice Road Truckers.
Research company International Data Group Communications promoted Pete Longo to Chief Digital Officer for Media Brands in the U.S. and Michael Friedenberg to CEO, IDG Consumer & SMB. IDG Communications also promoted John Gallant as Chief Content officer for IDG Consumer & SMB.
