Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Just in time for the iPhone 5 launch, YouTube released a new standalone iOS app early yesterday morning. Now available in the Apple App Store, the new app has been built by YouTube engineers and offers access to the site’s expansive library of video content. Features of the app include: A channel guide to your YouTube subscriptions, which can be viewed by swiping from the left edge of the screen; enhanced video discovery via new search tools that offer suggestions as you type and the ability for users to flip through related videos and information while watching a video; and the ability to share videos on Google+, Facebook, Twitter, or via SMS or email. YouTube said that it’s still working on a version that’s optimized for the iPad, which should be available “in the coming months.” Until then, it’s the same user interface across all three iOS devices. Oh, and it should be noted, ads are now also a part of the YouTube iOS experience.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Viacom have expanded their TV Everywhere partnership to allow TWC customers to access full-length episodes from multiple Viacom networks “wherever and whenever they want” online. Available to all TWC customers who subscribe to Viacom as part of their cable package, these customers can log into any of Viacom’s on-demand websites for BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Spike, and VH1 with their Time Warner Cable ID in order to watch full-length episodes of shows airing on that particular channel. TWC and Viacom’s existing TV Everywhere deal allows customers to watch live Viacom programming when inside their home via the TWC TV web and mobile app.

Beginning this week and running through October 7, CNN is programming a multiplatform global initiative called “Our Mobile Society,” which will examine the impact of mobile devices on topics such as personal relationships, work habits, cultural quirks, health, finance, and etiquette. CNN’s mobile apps and mobile website, as well as CNN.com, will feature a special section that offers stories and videos related to the topic. Additionally, CNN iReport will allow users to create and share iReports directly from the company’s mobile website for the first time. Our Mobile Society extends to the television screen as well, as CNN has plans to air a full week of coverage regarding the topic beginning on September 24.

FOX Sports is reporting record-breaking online traffic numbers for the month of August, citing the recent London Olympics as a reason for the boost. Based on comScore’s August 2012 Media Metrix data, the FOXSports.com on MSN digital network, which includes FOXSports.com, Yardbarker, and Scout.com, among others, reached 45 million unique visitors in August 2012. This broke the network’s previous high of 38.8 million uniques during last November. Based on the company’s internal video data, FOXSports.com pulled in a total of 1.7 billion minutes in time-spent viewing content, 1.5 billion page views, and 31.3 million video streams, all of which are new records.

Rich-media ad platform provider Republic Project has landed $1 million in Series A financing, led by Google Ventures with contributions from the likes of Ludlow Ventures and Tremor Video Co-Founder Andrew Reis. According to Ad Age, which was the first to report the investment announcement, Republic Project offers a content management system that allows advertisers to add interactive elements such as photos and videos to standard IAB ad units, mobile web apps, and Facebook apps, all in unison. The goal is to simplify the process and minimize the cost of developing and running rich-media ad campaigns. In fact, the start-up charges a flat rate of $5,000/month per campaign.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Digital marketing solutions provider Lyris has unveiled Lyris ONE, a new automation platform that analyzes consumer interaction data from structured and unstructured sources, including social, email, mobile, and hundreds of enterprise applications, to power digital marketing campaigns. The solution captures consumer profile data from multiple sources to create what Lyris says is a “live” view of every individual in a single location so that marketers can improve targeting, messaging, and conversions. Lyris ONE also features a proprietary “event processor” that can help marketers define specific engagement scenarios, including exact trigger factors and ranges, target segments, and content delivered.

Free apps will account for 89% of total downloads in 2012, according to a new Gartner report, which also projects worldwide mobile app store downloads to surpass 45.6 billion during this year. Gartner also expects Apple’s App store to hit more than 21 billion downloads, an increase of 74% over 2011, indicating to the research firm that there’s still a healthy demand for mobile app content. On the topic of in-app purchases versus paid apps, Gartner argues that the former is a better business model as it gives developers the ability to entice a user with great design and app performance, convert them, and then retain them with a continuous good user experience and regular product updates, which open the door for a recurring revenue stream. The firm forecasts that in-app purchases will drive 41% of the global mobile app store revenue in 2016, as it believes that the number of app downloads featuring in-app purchase will increase form 5% of total downloads in 2011 to 30% in 2016.

Millennial Media has released its latest Mobile Mix report, which covers trends and data the mobile ad company has seen across its network in the second quarter of 2012. Among the notable findings, Apple stands tall as the top smartphone manufacturer on the Millennial Platform, accounting for over 31% of the share of impressions, with the iPhone being the top individual mobile phone. Next on the this list is Samsung, which represented 22% of all impressions on the Millennial Platform in Q2 and had eight devices in Millennial’s list of top 20 phones. Overall, 74% of all impressions on the Millennial platform in Q2 came from smartphones, an increase of 8% year-over-year. Other Q2 findings include:

  • In terms of operating systems, Android grabbed 46% of total impressions, while iOS came in second with 34%.
  • The iPad, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and Kindle Fire were the top three tablets on Millennial.
  • 95% of tablet impressions came over a Wi-Fi network, which Millennial says indicates that the device is being used a lot at home or at work.

VEVO has published its latest quarterly report on consumer behavior trends when it comes to music video consumption online and across its other digital platforms. From July 2011 to June 2012, viewers watched 40 billion music videos worldwide (9.3 billion in the US). This means that users are watching roughly 103 million videos on average across VEVO platforms every day. The company indicates that its global footprint currently stands at 3 billion video streams worldwide each month. In addition, mobile is becoming a huge aspect of VEVO’s distribution platform (something which the company points out that comScore does not cover in its Media Metrix or Video Metrix data). VEVO reports that mobile traffic nearly doubled in Q2 2012 when compared to Q1 2012, reaching over 1.3 billion streams globally. Monthly mobile active users also rose to 5 million in June 2012, a growth of almost 33%, while the average number of videos watched on mobile per month jumped to 15 per user.

Americans spend nearly 35 hours a week watching videos across screens, and almost five additional hours using the internet on a computer, according to the latest Nielsen Cross-Platform Report. While a significant chunk of the day is still devoted to live-TV viewing (4 hours and 38 minutes in Q1 2012), DVR playback has grown from 12 minutes per day in Q1 2008 to 24 minutes per day in Q1 2012. The Q1 data from Nielsen also shows that Americans in TV households on average spend 14 minutes a day on gaming consoles. However, those who use seventh-generation consoles spend even more time on the devices than the overall average, which Nielsen notes have the ability to be both a traditional gaming console and a hub for watching video content.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Hulu is rolling out an update to the Hulu Plus app for the PlayStation 3. The new interface consists of larger artwork, a tray-style format that allows users to scroll through recommendations, popular shows and movies, top 100 clips, and movie trailers, as well as a new “Shows You Watch” feature that offers quick access to shows users regularly watch on the video subscription service. Other updates include search results that now appear directly beneath the query and simplified controls, as in users can hit “up” or “down” on their control to display the playback menu and “left” or “right” to rewind or fast-forward.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

NY-based social media ad company Taykey has hired Matt Rosenberg to be its new VP/Marketing. He will lead the company’s efforts to raise brand and product awareness among advertiser and media agency clients. The company earlier this year launched a Topical Advertising Platform, which it says analyzes over 50,000 data sources to figure out topical content that audiences are consuming at that moment, and then uses a proprietary buying technology to place clients’ ads against such relevant and trending content.
