U.K.’s Virgin Media signed an agreement with Netflix, making it the first pay-TV platform to include the streaming service. Netflix will be integrated into Virgin’s branded TiVo boxes; after a test with 40,000 Virgin customers – this week, the service will be made available to Virgin’s 1.7 million TiVo homes.
Streaming video service Vimeo is pumping up its OnDemand platform. Updates include new renting and purchasing pricing options, preorder availability, a new checkout experience and promo code generator. In other words: Vimeo is giving video creators tools they need to make money from their content.

Fox is premiering The Mindy Project’s second season on Fox.com, Fox On Demand, and Hulu a week before its official debut on Sept. 17, part of a “Mindy Makeover Sweepstakes” promotion with American Express. The free episode will be available to stream until Sept. 16.
Starz Digital Media launched original comedy channel Union Pool on YouTube Tuesday. Episodes of the three live-action and animated series featured on the channel’s line-up will be released every Tuesday and Thursday.
Beauty brand Bobbi Brown Cosmetics announced its first beauty channel on YouTube called I Love Makeup. The channel partners with Collective Digital Studio and Multi-Channel Network to produce comedic, makeover and inspirational programs with assists from established YouTube stars. President of Bobbi Brown Maureen Case says the new channel is “an effort to reach millennials where they are playing today and have a conversation with them in their language.” An interactive campaign using Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr allows fans to interact with make-up artists and the channel’s cast.
Streaming online video isn’t just a pastime for the under-30 crowd. An Ericcson’s Consumer lab August 2013 report released Tuesday found 41 percent of people ages 65-69 watch more than one piece of streaming content per week. The study suggests that many in the age group rely on Hulu and Netflix as their main streaming service. In other words: Video-streaming services are becoming popular even among traditional TV’s most adamant supporters.

Geico takes first for the third month in a row for Top 10 Most Shared Brands, according Unruly Media’s August 2013 report. Here’s who hit the top five spots:
01) Geico recorded 950,447 campaign shares
02) DirecTV placed with 453,256 shares
03) Nike with 385,379 shares
04) NBC at 253,906 shares
05) One Direction at 230,067 shares
NBC and One Direction made their first appearance in the chart. Activision (Call of Duty) took sixth place with 216,470 shares, and Rockstar Games nabbed seventh with 204,273 shares. Head & Shoulders (190,359 shares) and Helloflo (139,802 shares) made their debuts on the list at eighth and ninth place. Another first for the list, Qatar Airways, rolled in at the final spot at 132,458 shares.
A Romanian Coca-Cola ad scored by integrating social media real-time response and television advertising. Ad agency MRM Worldwide used real time editing to insert five to seven live-Twitter responses mentioning the ad’s campaign hashtag #LetsEatTogther on a subtitle bar. During the period the campaign aired, Coke’s Twitter followers increased by 15 percent, according to a behind-the-scenes video released by the ad agency. MRM Worldwide’s General Manager Nir Refuah told Mashable the program could be used in U.S. advertisements, adding that in Romania “it made people actually wait for the ad. How often does that happen?”
Apple’s one-hour product event held few surprises on Tuesday. The highlight of the show were the new iPhones that replace the iPhone 5:
- iPhone 5C: The 5C boasts all the bells and whistles of an iPhone, but it is made of color infused plastic and comes in blue, green, yellow, pink and white. It will sell for $99-$199 in the U.S. with pre-orders starting Sept. 13, and go on sale internationally Sept. 20.
- iPhone 5S: This is the luxury version, as Apple makes clear with a new gold (as well as white or grey) hue. The new chip in the 5S is apparently five times faster than the 5, and the phone’s security is taken up a notch with a finger print sensor button TouchID that will unlock the phone and verify iTunes purchases, with the current passcode as a backup. The phone will sell for $199-$399, and on sale Sept. 20 in nine countries including the U.S.
Apple also unveiled the new iOS7 to launch Sept. 18, a new creative suite including iWork – but left out any mention of iPad updates.

Looks like the Internet’s been punk’d. Jimmy Kimmel revealed on his show Monday night that he was behind the YouTube “twerk fail” video, which scored over nine million views in under a week. The spot, dubbed Worst Twerk Fail EVER – Girl Catches on Fire!, shows a woman’s dance gone so wrong, she falls into candles and her pants go up in flames. Kimmel interviewed the video’s star, only to expose her as a stuntwoman enlisted for the hoax. “We didn’t send it to any TV station, we didn’t tweet it. We just put it on YouTube and let the magic happen,” Kimmel said about the video gone viral. The moral of the story? YouTube’s still got “it” – and maybe don’t believe everything you see on the web.
