Cynopsis: Kids!
10/05/11
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 5, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Sesame Street will tackle the difficult issue of family/childhood hunger in an age appropriate way with the help of Lily, a new girl Muppet character created specifically for the new primetime special Growing Hope Against Hunger, premiering on PBS nationwide October 9 at 7p (check local listings). A Spanish-language version of the special will air on Univision on October 22 at 1p and on Telefutura on October 23 at 1p. Produced by Sesame Workshop and featuring filmed segments of real kids telling their personal stories from director/filmmaker Cynthia Wade, Growing Hope Against Hunger stars country singer Brad Paisley and actress Kimberly Williams Paisley along with other popular Sesame Street characters. The special is made possible by the support of Walmart. Lily, whose surprises Elmo in the special when she tells him that sometimes her family goes to the local food pantry, represents what the United States Department of Agriculture estimates to be 17 million American children, more than half of which are under the age of six, who face “food insecurity,” which is to say they have limited or uncertain access to affordable and nutritious food. The special offers several positive actionable strategies to empower young viewers and their families as to how they might help combat this issue in their communities. Information about the special and Sesame Workshop’s Food for Thought: Eating Well on a Budget effort can be found at www.sesamestreet.org/food.

STONE SOUP
According to Kids and Entertainment Content, 2011 Edition, a new report from The NPD Group, kids are increasingly downloading digital content.
- The report finds that for every dollar K2-14 spend on entertainment content, US$0.79 goes to physical format content and $0.21 goes towards digital format content, which is a marked shift towards digital content acquisition compared to 2009 when it was $0.85 and $0.15 respectively.
- Overall most kids’ content, physical and digital formats, consists primarily of music (72%), followed by movie, then video games, TV shows and books and apps.
- While the majority of kids’ entertainment content is still acquired in a physical format, digitally acquired content has grown substantially over the last two years at +17% for games, +14% for music, and +13% for movies.
- Kids, of course, adapt to and use technology easily and quickly. The study shows that kids start downloading digital content from a young age (with and without help), and that about 50% of kids have paid for their first digital content by the age of 7. One-third of kids report songs are the first digital product they purchased, which leads to computer games and mobile games.
- And how are kids buying digital content? Mostly via pay-per download, with the exception of TV shows and movies with just over half using subscriptions services.
