Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/3/07
Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, October 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Microsoft unveiled the second generation of Zune music players, enabling Wi-Fi syncing from PC to Zune and setting up an iTunes-like interface allowing users to regularly import TV shows recorded to the PC-based Windows Media Center DVR. No word yet on when video will be added to the Zune Marketplace, but look for 1 million new DRM-free music tracks to be available in the coming weeks. Microsoft has some catching up to do in the portable media player space; about 1.2 million Zunes have been sold to date compared to more than 100 million iPods.
Yahoo rolled out a newly revamped search engine designed to help it cut into Google’s massive lead in the search market. Like Google, Yahoo! Search now incorporates multimedia sources such as videos from YouTube, images from Flickr and data from online libraries and suggests other related searches users may want to try. A “search assist” feature also suggests related terms and other topics to explore. Meanwhile Yahoo announced a new mobile search deal with Telefonica making it the default search engine in 15 Latin American and European countries.
CNN, IBN News, Jamba, Sony Pictures, RooftopComedy, ROK, and Versaly Entertainment joined with YouTube and Reuters to provide video content to the Nokia Video Center. The on-demand content is accessible only through the expensive Nokia N95 phone via a 3G or Wi-Fi network. The phone retails for $650-$750 in the U.S., though it’s fully loaded with the latest bells and whistles.
MySpace selected The Weather Channel Interactive to provide content for a new weather section on the site. Weather.com will offer current conditions, weather maps, news and related video content.
Fox hit drama House became a casualty of NBC’s rift with Apple because it is produced by Universal Media Studios. The show was added to the platform last May.
That’s inconceivable! Worldwide Biggies Inc. and Act III Licensing are teaming up to launch a series of casual online games based on the cult classic The Princess Bride. Timed for the release of a special 20th anniversary DVD from MGM Home Entertainment on November 13, a DVD-based game is also in the works. Register at princessbridegame.com for email updates.
A full complement of celebrities and partners are participating in Lifetime‘s 13th annual multiplatform Stop Breast Cancer for Life campaign running throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The campaign includes a range of cool interactive goodies as well as its first ever theme song written by songwriter Kara DioGuardi. The tune is featured in Lifetime original Matters of Life & Dating, premiering October 22 and available as a sneak-peak this month on iTunes.
Video services firm ROO struck a deal with Fox Television Stations to syndicate daily local and regional news videos from Fox’s 24 O&Os across the ROO Video Exchange platform. ROO also signed on to syndicate Chat the Planet’s Hometown Baghdad series and is launching a new international news channel with Agence France-Presse featuring video stories from the agency’s network of 40 video reporters.
Online video infrastructure companies are having little trouble raising cash according to Private Equity Hub. Utah-based Move Networks, which provides streaming services to ABC, The CW and Fox, secured an additional $34 million bringing its total capitalization to $45 million. Acton, Mass.-based Acinion secured an additional $16 million from Globespan Capital Partners, IDG Ventures Boston and Sigma Partners.
YouTube launched its first international film contest, accepting original works starting Sunday, Oct. 7 through Friday, Nov. 9 from filmmakers in Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Spain, the UK and the U.S. Project Direct entries will be narrowed down for style and creativity by a panel of judges led by director Jason Reitman (Thank You for Smoking). The YouTube community will ultimately decide who wins a trip to their film festival of their choice, courtesy of HP.
Major League Baseball will test a new content tracking and monitoring technology during the playoffs provided by Teletrax that will enable the league to better monetize in-game sponsorship. For instance, the number of times a watermarked banner shows up on air can be tracked by date or local market.
Disney-ABC Television‘s Photo & New Communications Media department is partnering with independent photo agency Retna Ltd. to digitize and market millions of archived images, dating all the way back to the 1940 Blue Network radio days. Retna will market and distribute the images on retna.com.
Video syndicator Voxant says it has signed 234 content affiliates helping to generate an aggregate 23 million monthly ad impressions for publishers. New affiliates include Getty Images, Reuters Business Video and the Associated Press, which added its AP Today-in-History Video and AP Politics Video.
Local media focused digital content management and ad firm MediaSpan expanded it local online footprint to include 50 high school sports sites under the 50 prepcountry.com banner, managed by Sports IQ.
Growth in online video and local search will help increase worldwide internet ad spending an estimated 30% to $33.7 billion this year, according to a new forecast from ZenithOptimedia. The blistering pace is expected to continue, accounting for $48.1 billion of the total $504.5 billion expected in 2009. Meanwhile the firm downgraded its forecast for the overall U.S. ad market from 3.3% growth to 2.5% growth, due to the credit squeeze and housing slump.
Political blog Huffington Post named former GM of CBSNews.com Betsy Morgan as its new CEO. Former interim CEO and co-founder Kenneth Lerer will move up to Chairman.
Interpublic Emerging Media Lab appointed Scott Wensman to the newly created position of Director of Media Strategy and Content. Scott will assist in establishing partnerships with media vendors and offer insight into current industry trends, reporting from Los Angeles to Lori H. Schwartz, SVP/Director of Emerging Media.
Social networking/TV download site Tape It Off the Internet launched with a cutesy, easy-to-navigate interface offering access to a wide variety of episodic TV available online. Tioti.com helps you search for video on dozens of network and user generated sites, click off what you’ve already seen, recommend shows to others and download widgets and players that can be embedded on other pages or your desktop. It walks a fine line between legit and subterranean, offering video torrents from underground sites such as Pirate Bay and Mininova while promising to follow takedown notices from content owners. It will be interesting to see how it’s received from the powers that be.
