Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/26/11
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, October 26, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
The conversion rate of turning people into customers is four times higher for Facebook fan pages than it is for regular display ads and six times higher than standard Facebook ads, reports GigaOm based on findings from an ad campaign that social analytics firm Campalyst ran with Blue1 airlines. From August to September, Blue1 ran a multi-channel ad campaign that included regular status updates on its Facebook fan page, targeted Facebook ads and traditional display ads. The results showed that branded fan pages were significantly more successful in driving ticket purchases than the other forms of digital ads. While it makes sense that fans of a company’s Facebook page would be more likely to purchase, GigaOm notes an interesting statistic that speaks to Facebook’s emerging ad serving strategy: only 14% of users who are already fans of a brand will see the brand’s status updates on their news feed. So, as Facebook makes more data available on fan pages, it is also limiting how often brand status updates will appear in news feeds. Why? Sponsored stories; advertisers pay to reach fans’ news streams.
Fox Networks has announced that Verizon FiOS TV and Mediacom subscribers will have access to FOX on Demand and its lineup of FOX primetime programming. This deal will allow subscribers to watch episodes the day after they air by logging on to FOX.com or Hulu.com and entering their subscriber IDs and passwords, instead of having to wait eight days like non-subscribers. Verizon has already launched the service while Mediacom will follow suit in the coming weeks.
ESPN has inked a six-year deal with the Women’s Tennis Association to bring live coverage of its events across all ESPN platforms, including ESPN3, the sports network’s multi-screen channel.
The news has not gotten any better for Netflix after it announced that it lost 800,000 subscribers in the third quarter. The company’s shares fell $44 overnight from the $118 they closed at on Monday, a loss of 37%. Bloomberg says that is the biggest intraday decline since October 2004. It is a staggering loss indeed when you consider the stock closed at an all-time high of $298 on July 13.
As a part of its Work of Art: The Next Great Artist web series, BravoTV.com is premiering the first of eight new webisodes sponsored by Cars.com, in which contestants compete to create a new Cars.com “Car of the Year” trophy and win $10,000. In a bit of double promotion, once the show is down to only three contestants, fans will be able to log-on and vote for a trophy and also be in the running to win $10,000 of their own. New webisodes will air on Wednesdays at 6 pm.
Son of Ted Turner and popular sportsman Beau Turner will host a 20-minute live chat on the Sportsman Channel‘s Facebook page while his show Beau Knows Outdoors airs on the network’s TV channel on Thursday night at 10:30 pm ET. Viewers will also have a chance to win a Zeiss Victory Riflescope donated by Turner during the chat.
Foodily, the site that lets users compare recipes and share on Facebook, has refined its search capabilities, now allowing people to filter and share searches according to specific medical conditions. It is accessible both via the network’s own website and Facebook app. In related news, Healthline will also incorporate this functionality into its “Powered by Foodily” recipe search.
The National Cable Television Cooperative, Inc. is looking to create a centralized authentication platform for multi-screen services like HBO GO, according to a report from Light Cable Reading. This new system would make it easier for cable operators, who do not have the means to create their own authentication systems, to provide TV Everywhere services for their subscribers without having to make individual requests for multi-screen services.
BlueCava has secured a $9.5 million round of funding led by S3 Ventures, with additional funding from existing investors such as Mark Cuban. The company’s technology allows businesses to identify connected devices in order to improve online ad targeting effectiveness and minimize risk fraud.
Visa has filed for several patents that “provide a blueprint for using credit-card transaction data to target digital ads and personalize other content, such as search results,” says a report from The Wall Street Journal. The patent applications also indicate the possibility of using tracking data to see if a delivered ad leads to a consumer buying the product it advertises.
Google has launched Search Triggers, a tool that allows TV advertisers to use search trends data to control and customize when and how they deliver ads through the Google TV Ads platform, said the TV Ads team in a blog post. The service monitors real-time changes in demand for key terms you specify and automatically adjusts your daily budget to match that spike or decline.
Broadcast Interactive Media (BIM) will be the website technology provider for Telemundo Station Group, which will re-launch its 10 local TV station websites on the BIM platform by the end of 2011. Not done dealing, BIM also announced a contract extension with NBC Owned Television Stations to continue providing CMS services for the NBC stations’ 10 locally-oriented websites.
During work hours, Facebook is outpacing TV in consumer media time spent, according to a report from eMarketer. Adult millennials are the biggest drivers of this trend as 44% reported logging on to Facebook between 9 am and 5pm, while only 28% watched TV. Teen millennials (15 to 17 year-olds) also reported higher Facebook usage than TV (30% vs. 24%). As for the youngest consumer group (8 to 14 year olds), there was an equal number (16%) who indicated using Facebook or watching TV. In fact, the only exception was baby boomers as they prefer to watch TV across all hours. Finally, all age groups showed losing interest in Facebook in favor of TV during the evening hours.
The latest Mobile Mix report from Millennial Media took a look at the iOS over the third quarter of 2011 and found that mobile impressions grew 60% year-over-year across all iOS devices. In fact, iPad impressions alone grew 456% on Millennial’s platform. Other findings from the report include:
- The iPhone accounted for 54% of iOS impressions on Millennial’s platform.
- Android was the leading operating system across smartphones and connected devices as it grabbed 56% of impressions.
- In terms of ad spend on applications, Android apps had a 49% share, which is a growth of 20% quarter-over-quarter.
Hipmunk, the popular flight and hotel travel search engine, has unveiled a new feature that integrates Google Calendar into the service, reports TechCrunch. Essentially, it can now check flight listings and figure out which ones will best fit into your schedule. You can choose to ignore some conflicts or even hide all flights that would clash with plans.
Google has completely redesigned its Chrome Web Store, and it is much sleeker with larger visuals and cleaner navigational features. The redesign follows the aesthetic overhaul the company recently gave to Gmail. Do check it out if you use the browser.
David Wertheimer has been appointed by Fox Broadcasting Company to be its new President of Digital. Reporting to FOX president of entertainment Kevin Reilly, Wertheimer will be responsible for the network’s digital entertainment strategy, operations and future ventures including websites, apps and more.
ESPN has hired Michael Bayle as Senior Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Mobile. He will be in charge of all aspects of ESPN’s mobile strategy and execution and will report to John Kosner, senior vice president and general manager of ESPN digital and print media.
George Linardos is the new Head of Digital Operations at Time Inc, reports The Wall Street Journal. The former Noka executive will be responsible for driving sales growth for Time’s digital products.
IBM has tabbed sales exec Virginia M. Rometty to replace Samuel J. Palmisano as its new CEO and President, effective January 1, 2012. Palmisano will stay on IBM’s board as chairman, a position he has held since 2003.
Scott Moore will become the Chief Digital Officer, a newly created position, for Yell Group, a U.K.-based yellow pages and local directory services provider. Based out of a new office to be opened in Seattle that will also serve as the center of the company’s digital operations, Moore will oversee the creation and development of digital products and services for small to midsize enterprise customers. Moore will report directly to CEO Mike Pocock.
Occupy the Internet. There’s really no better way for me to put what the website does than that. All you do is simply add a URL to a website in the entry box, any website you want to have occupied, and then click “Occupy!” It will take you directly to that site and project animated GIFs of people (and popular characters ranging from William Wallace to Batman, a Stormtrooper and even Pikachu) in front of the site, protesting and picketing. Not bad, internet. Not bad.
