News Corp. and eBay have struck a deal to tie the world’s largest social networking platform together with the world’s most popular voice-over-IP service. Beginning next month 110 million MySpace users will be able to place calls through its instant messaging program powered by the 220 million-member Skype network. The ad supported deal should help the two services cross pollinate; so far only 6.7% of Skype customers use MySpace IM and just 2.6% of MySpace IM users use Skype. Separately MySpace also announced a pact with Sony BMG to make select artists’ video and audio content available on their MySpace profile pages. The two companies will share in the ad revenues generated from deal.


Clear Channel Television’s Inergize Digital Media is deploying free vanity Gmail accounts through the local station web sites it manages as well as offering users access to other Google Apps including Google Docs, Google Calendar and Google Talk. The idea is to provide users with the communications tools they most often use within the local station environment, so they spend more time on the site. The service will launch initially on Tulsa, OK-based
Retirement Living TV premieres a new 30-minute show this month geared to help the 55+ crowd figure out new technologies. Each episode will focus on one aspect of life where technological devices can enhance older Americans’ quality of life. Retired and Wired premieres October 25 at 2 pm ET.

New York state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo reached an agreement with Facebook on safeguarding against obscene content and online predators. Facebook agreed to address complaints within 24 hours after they are made, respond to them within 72 hours and post safety procedures in a prominent place on the site. The deal was struck a day after the Pew Internet and American Life Project estimated that 44% of online American teens have been contacted by a stranger on social networking sites.
is lowering its prices on DRM-free music tracks on iTunes in response to Amazon’s MP3 store pricing. Songs previously sold for $1.29 will now be 99 cents – the same price a copy-protected track goes for. Apple also announced it will ship the Mac OS X Leopard operating system on October 26, packed with more than 300 new features.
Yahoo‘s third quarter net income declined by 4.6% as revenue increased 12% to $1.77 billion from a year earlier. New CEO Jerry Yang said he was pleased with the company’s progress increasing the portal’s overall usage, improving its ad platform and attracting more developers by adopting open standards.
Video rental chain Movie Gallery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after failing to find a buyer for its brick-and-mortar stores. Movie Gallery’s attempts at entering the digital age include acquiring Moviebeam and the planned launch of an online DVD rental service to rival Netflix and Blockbuster.


Membership to social networking sites will reach 230 million worldwide by the end of 2007, according to a new report by independent market analyst Datamonitor. Ad revenues at social networking sites are also on the rise, expected to increase from $965 million this year to $2.4 billion by 2012. By year-end 2007 Asia Pacific will account for 35% of the world’s social networking memberships. Europe, the Middle East and Africa will hold 28%, North America 25% while the Caribbean and Latin America will account for 12%.

Former President of On Demand Media Group, Neil Goldberg has been named COO and Peter Chantel, previously CFO at Sony Signatures Network, joins as CFO, Akimbo.  Both will be based in San Mateo, CA and report to Thomas F. Frank, CEO.
Lifetime Networks named former MTV executive Mike Greco as EVP, Research, effective immediately. Mike will oversee research for Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women programming as well as Lifetime Digital, Advertising and Affiliate Sales. He reports to Andrea Wong, President and CEO.
President and CEO of Blue Frog Media Victor Siegel was named Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors. Victor recently joined Blue Frog Media from MPP Ventures LLC, a strategic consulting/advisory firm focused on the digital music and media technology sectors.


The folks at digital brand management firm Electric Artists have launched a blog to get a head start on building a community around Paranormal State, the latest “real life” show scheduled to premiere on A&E in December.  Paranormal is written by experts in the paranormal field, with specialties including folklore, unexplained phenomenon and psychic vampirism, who encourage users to submit their own real-life paranormal accounts. The show chronicles the exploits of Penn State University’s Paranormal Research Society, which is actually hosting the national UNIV-CON conference on the subject this weekend, if you really want to learn more about things that go bump in the night.
