Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, October 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

BitTorrent continued with its transition from pirated content enabler to legit video streaming provider, unveiling new software to help make streaming video over the web faster and more cost effective. Dubbed the BitTorrent Delivery Network Accelerator (DNA), the service uses peer-to-peer architecture to save on server costs; when one user watches a video the software sends data to others requesting the same stream. It can also be used to facilitate downloads of feature length movies, games, software and other large files.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Tivo
struck a deal with Real Network’s Rhapsody music service to give Tivo subscribers access to the 4 million song subscription-based music service for an extra $12.99 a month. Tivo also has deals in place with Amazon’s UnBox, Fandango and others, designed to make the DVR a content hub that reaches beyond the cable universe. Meanwhile the company said integration with Comcast set-tops is near to being completed, a promise it has been making for two years.
 
MTV
launched a new fashion website TheLookRightNow.com to showcase the original micro-series Fashion: The Life, also available for viewing across MTV’s The Hills on VOD as well as the show’s virtual world site. The 3-10 minute webisodes, powered by iFilm, feature co-branded content opportunities for sponsor Pepsi to plug its new designer clothing line.
 
Multiplatform network ReelzChannel will premiere the new show Movie Up on Thursday, October 18 at 6:30 pm ET. The movie guide show, hosted by comedienne Tory Shulman, focuses on new releases in every window of distribution.
 
High-def broadband lifestyle network KushTV signed a deal with Helio to distribute a number of its original episodic series to 3G mobile phone users. KushTV currently has branded channel partnerships with Helio, Joost, YouTube and Akimbo.
 
Mobile software provider Emdigo introduced new console-quality mobile 3D character screens based on THQ Wireless licensed brands. Content can be navigated via keyword tags instead of the dreaded pull-down menu. The NFL is one of the THQ licensees to provide content.
 
Quirky author and radio host Riley Martin, who regularly appears on Howard Stern’s show to discuss his alien abductions, is hosting his own weekly interactive webcast on Broadcaster.com.

Finnish instant-messaging start-up Jaiku was acquired by Google. Like Twitter, Jaiku utilizes web and IM-based tools to allow users to keep track of their friends’ comings and goings without having to cumbersomely text individual friends. The site assures users its IM, SMS and web based apps will continue work normally.
 
Vuze announced it is opening up its platform to allow independent producers distribute video content through its portal. Video, audio and gaming publishers have the option to offer ad-supported downloads or pay-for-play rentals. Vuze also announced it reached the 10 million user milestone, adding 2 million new users in September alone.
 
Social sports network Takkle launched a new High School Football raking system from Sports Illustrated that allows fans to view videos and rate the county’s top 100 players.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Yahoo is buying a 10% stake in the Hong Kong IPO of Alibaba.com, the B-to-B unit of China’s biggest online retailer. The stock is scheduled to go on sale on the Hong Kong market on Nov. 6.
 
The AP is suing VeriSign-owned Moreover Technologies for publishing AP’s news reports online without permission after it asked the company to cease and desist in September. Moreover was acquired by Verisign two years ago.
 
What started as an open discussion on Apple‘s forum has hatched into a class action lawsuit. California resident Timothy Smith is suing over Apple’s aggressive stance against hackers who have figured out how to unlock the iPhone. The company recently sent out updates that would disable unlocked phones and announced it would deny warranty services to those affected.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Streaming media ad network TargetSpot struck a partnership with content-sponsored links provider Pulse 360 to integrate advertising and publishing solutions. TargetSpot allows businesses to create, buy and place their own advertising messages within streaming media. Pulse 360 offers a range of content-based and geographic-based targeted advertising.
 
Twitter launched a new feature to allow advertisers reach loyal users by launching branded channels, according to The Guardian. The “microblogging” start-up has attracted 350,000 devotees since launching and enjoys a cult following in Silicon Valley. 
 
Rebel Digital signed a deal to become the exclusive advertising, sales and marketing partner of music search engine Project Playlist. The site has over 13 million registered users to date.

Only 23% of Millennials surveyed strongly agreed they would rather watch videos on their TVs vs. their PCs compared to 48% of 55 to 64 year olds, according to a Frank N. Magid Associates study published in Ad Age. Nearly 29% of the overall sample admitted the PC is competing for their entertainment viewing time. For the 18-24 year old crowd, that percentage rises to 36%.
