Cynopsis: Kids!
11/02/11
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 2, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Sesame Workshop, China Youth Development Foundation (CYDF) and MSD roll out the second phase of the Outreach initiative to provide emergency response education for kids and families in China, which includes the distribution of emergency preparedness content. This new phase addresses what kids an families can do to prepare for before an emergency and will be distributed in 75,000 kids to individual families and Hope Primary Schools in 15 provinces across China, which are prone to or have recently experienced a natural disaster, and have limited access to TV, including Hebei, Sichuan, Gansu, and Yunnan. The kits include a DVD with songs and activities that help kids learn about getting ready for emergencies (e.g. knowing your full name, your parents’ names, and putting together an emergency kit with your family), a parent/caregiver magazine the lays out how to make an emergency plan with and for your family, a family activity book, and a Sesame Street notepad for kids (many who don’t have stationery). The first phase of Outreach, launched in April 2011 and focused on the needs of kids in the aftermath of a crises/disaster, by providing activities for kids that help establish a sense of stability, safety, and normalcy that may have been disrupted.
Looking to expand its presence in Asia, Toys “R” Us acquires a majority stake (70%) in China’s Li & Fun Retailing‘s existing Toys “R” Us licensed store operations in Southeast Asia and Greater China. The existing Toys “R” Us operations in Asia currently consists of 100+ stores and offices in nine markets. Together Toys “R” Us and Li & Fung launch a joint venture that will look to further expand Toys “R” Us into new and existing Asian markets, and allow Toys “R” Us to acquire the remaining share of the business in the future. Effective immediately, the joint venture will include 90 existing Toys “R” Us stores in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand. These stores will be considered wholly owned operations of Toys “R” Us. The remaining 14 stores in the Philippines and Macau continue to be operated under a license agreement. The joint venture will also include ownership and oversight of offices in seven markets, as well as the regional headquarters in Hong Kong. Some 350+ employees who had previously been part of the licensed operation will now become Toys “R” Us employees.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP), with DC Entertainment, extends its long relationship with Mattel. Under the new multi-year deal Mattel will continue as master toy licensee for the complete universe of DC Comics characters, with unprecedented access to the complete scope of the DC Comics vault of characters, which includes more than a thousand DC Comics Super Heroes and Super Villains, such as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and The Joker. Furthermore, the newly extended pact includes characters such as The Flash, Aquaman, Shazam!, Green Arrow and Hawkman. In addition to the rights to existing DC Comics characters, animation and feature films, the extension includes Mattel’s rights to produce toys based on future DC Comics films and animation projects that are developed and produced during the term of the agreement. As part of the ongoing relationship, Mattel is developing toy lines for two of Warner Bros.’ upcoming theatrical releases The Dark Knight Rises (July 20, 2012) and Man of Steel (June 14, 2013). Future TV collaborations include Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming TV series, Green Lantern: The Animated Series, along with their ongoing product support for Young Justice, also from Warner Bros.
