Disney is combining its ABC and Hulu scripted drama and comedy teams under Simran Sethi, who was promoted to President of Scripted Programming of Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment. ABC Signature will be folded into 20th Television headed by current 20th Television President Karey Burke. ABC Signature President Tracy Underwood will exit but will get an overall producing deal with 20th TV.

CNN.com has launched a paywall, marking a major change in strategy for the news organization, part of a longer-term effort to make the digital business profitable. In a memo to employees, CNN EVP of digital products and services Alex MacCallum said for $3.99 per month ($29.99 per year), subscribers will have access to CNN.com articles and will get benefits like exclusive election features, original documentaries, and fewer digital ads. The CNN homepage, live blogs and breaking news live stories, vertical videos, standalone video pages and interactive content will not be included in the paywall initially.

Lifetime’s annual “Stop Breast Cancer for Life” will feature stars of several network movies – Lyndsy Fonesca (who previously starred in the anthology series, “FIVE,” centered on breast cancer), Karrueche Tran and Jackie Cruz. The PSA campaign will run on Lifetime and across various digital platforms and amplified by Lifetime’s distribution partners, encouraging individuals to speak with their doctors about their individual risk factors.

Climate change (67%) and racism against people of color (65%) are issues of most concern to Hispanic/Latinx Americans of voting age, according to Horowitz Research’s new study, “FOCUS Latinx Volume 3: Social Cultural and Political Shifts.” About 64% say they are concerned about the media’s ability to shape perceptions and opinions, and 73% agree that it is “important to hear different voices and perspectives… so they can form their own opinions about things.” However, the majority also feel that there are “very few sources of unbiased news and information anymore” (65%), and they want to see accountability in this regard: Two in three (63%) do not believe that mainstream news is doing enough to fight disinformation and fake news, and fully 3 in 4 (74%) think news organizations should be held accountable when they spread misinformation. Despite those concerns, TV news and other mainstream sources continue to be an important source of information among Hispanic/Latinx Americans, with 51% saying they frequently use TV news to get information on current events, and 51% frequently using a combination of social media, online media outlets, and blogs to get that kind of information. While most (68%) younger Hispanic/Latinx consumers (ages 18-34) use social and digital platforms for the latest news and information (higher than their older counterparts), they are much less likely to rely on TV news.

Dynamic Television has acquired the worldwide distribution rights for Blue Ice Pictures’ new series “Revival,” based on the best selling graphic novel by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton. The television series stars Melanie Scrofano (“Wynonna Earp”), Romy Weltman (“Slasher, Murdoch Mysteries”), David James Elliot (“JAG,” “Mad Men”), and Andy McQueen (“Mrs. Davis”). “Revival” is currently in production and set to premiere in the U.S. on SYFY in 2025.

Prime Video has greenlit the first spinoff from its action-drama series “Reacher,” focused on Jack Reacher’s (Alan Ritchson) former military colleague Frances Neagley. Maria Sten, who has appeared in both seasons of “Reacher” will continue the role in the currently untitled spinoff. Amazon MGM Studios, Skydance Television and CBS Studios will produce and parent series creator, Nick Santora, and Nicholas Wootton (“Prison Break,” “NYPD Blue”) are co-creators of the spinoff.

“Life Below Zero” returns for its 23rd season on October 8 at 9/8c on National Geographic, and streams March 19 on Disney+ and Hulu.

MGM+ has renewed “Billy the Kid,” for an eight-episode third, and final, season. The series stars Tom Blyth (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”). Creator, writer, and executive producer Michael Hirst (“Vikings,” “The Tudors,” “Elizabeth”) will return for the third season alongside executive producers Donald De Line (De Line Pictures), Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey (Amblin Television). The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Amblin Television and De Line Pictures. “Billy the Kid” is internationally distributed by Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.

Social media and reality stars Leslie Gallardo, Tefi Valenzuela and Sebastián Villal obos will join the new season of Telemundo’s “Los 50,” premiering October 15 at 7p.

“Finnerty,” hosted by news anchor and broadcaster Rob Finnerty, will debut on Newsmax October 8 at 8p. Finnerty has been co-hosting Newsmax’s “Wake-Up America,” from 6:30a to 9a weekdays with Sharla McBride for the past four years.
Leighton Meester (“Single Parents,” “River Wild”) is set to join the season two cast of “The Buccaneers,” on Apple TV+.

Prime Video’s new game show “Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?”, hosted by Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, is set to premiere three episodes on October 16, followed by one new episode weekly. The series will be part of Prime Video’s Winning Wednesdays programming, joining a lineup that includes “Buy It Now,” “Wish List Games” and “Pop Culture Jeopardy!”.

“Vee Friends,” a new 2D-animated cartoon series produced by Moonbug Entertainment (part of Candle Media) and Vayner Watt will premiere its first three episodes on VeeFriends YouTube Kids channel on September 30.

Streaming service Philo has launched a new rebranding campaign, developed with creative agency Sibling Rivalry, aimed at giving the service a new visual identity and positioning it for the next stage of growth. Centered on the theme “A Better Way to TV,” the rebranding has occurred in several phases, including a new logo, launched earlier this month, and updates to its app with new recommendation carousels and tiles, a more streamlined menu, and better content labeling.

Future Today’s AVOD platform Happy Kids has launched new kids and family-friendly programming including Season 5 of the LEGO Group’s “Monkie Kid,” which premiered exclusively on the streaming platform. Other new programming includes Wildbrain’s “Caillou,” “The Deep” and “Franny’s Feet;” Jet Pack’s “Rainbow Butterfly Unicorn Kitty,” “Camp Getaway,” and “Inspector Sunshine” movies; Jim Henson’s “Sid the Science Kid;” and TMP’s “Go Astro Boy Go.” Two Halloween specials, with a Minecraft Original Witchcraft and Roblox special, are set to debut in October.

Air passengers desperate for baking tips need look no further than Gemma Stafford’s The Bold Baking Network, now available to Delta Air Lines travelers on Delta Studio, the airline’s in-flight entertainment offering beginning this month. The network features expert bakers and authorities from around the world, as well as the Irish chef’s fall recipes like Chewy Maple Pumpkin Cookies, Pumpkin Pie Brownies, and Irish Barmbrack. Other Network highlights include Liz Marek’s “Sugar Geek Show” and Ramon Garriga’s “Gluten Morgen.”

First-time TV advertisers are achieving significant and sustained mid-funnel results once they launch their campaign, according to the VAB’s new report, Breaking Through: How New Advertisers Are Using TV To Ignite Interest & Turn Consumers Into Customers. An analysis of 173 brands found that:
· Upon TV campaign launch, the average advertiser saw an immediate influx of over 300K website visitors.
· Mid-funnel impact from TV campaigns was achieved by first-time advertisers at all investment levels. Brands below $500K investment saw a 20% increase in website traffic; brands at $2M-$5M investment saw a 25% increase; and brands at $10M and above saw a 42% increase.
· Many brands then saw exponential growth in their monthly unique traffic, e.g. Temu, Cash App, Instacart, Canva and Varo saw increases of 177%, 47%, 40%, 58% and 1,223%, respectively.

“In the ever-evolving video advertising landscape, one assured constant persists: truly premium video ignites consumer action like no other media,” said Sean Cunningham, President & CEO, VAB. “As evident across our analyses, long-form, professionally produced video content consistently drives mid-funnel outcomes such as increased search and website traffic.”

Sinclair has partnered with digital innovation company Mindgrub to launch an Apple Vision Pro app for the broadcaster’s NewsON live and on-demand news service, with a “Newsroom immersion” feature for displaying interactive news maps and a complete immersive environment. The NewsON’s Vision Pro app has partnerships with over 280 local TV stations in TV markets covering more than 90% of U.S. households and provides access to on-demand newscasts and short form story clips from local TV stations nationwide. The app, powered by RealityKit and SwiftUI, also offers photorealistic 3D renderings and intuitive user experiences.

Circana has been designated by Snap Inc. as a preferred measurement partner. This new agreement expands the availability of Circana’s advanced measurement solutions to Snapchat advertisers worldwide. Under this new agreement, Snapchat advertisers can now access Circana’s Ansa, Household Lift, and Market Lift solutions across various regions.

Independents are paying the most attention to ads right now – about 4% more attention to political ads than the average, registering a 106 on TVision’s Attention To Visible Index (ATVI) for political ads and a 102 for all other ads. While Democrats are outspending Republicans nationwide on advertising since August 1, viewers who are Democrats have paid less attention to political ads than Republicans or Independents so far this election season. TVision’s ATVI measures how attentive viewers are to a specific, compared to the average for all television viewing attention.

Rasenberger Media, OTT Studio and acTVe launched Free Live Sports on September 30, a free live sports streaming platform with more than 100 channels and rights to thousands of premium on-demand sports movies, docs, series and highlights. Sports genres run the gamut – football, boxing, chess, tennis, billiards are just a few – and channels include Big 12 Network, Willow Sports, Glory Kickboxing, Mike Tyson TV, Motorsport.tv, MAVTV, Tennis Channel, Court Sports Network and others. The streamer is available in more than 75 countries and its content in accessible across the web, mobile, connected TVs, and set top boxes. In the US, new app launches include Roku and Fire TV, Android, VIZIO, IOS, tvOS and other platforms launching soon.

Monumental Sports Network will air 81 regular season and five preseason Washington Wizards games live during the 2024-25 NBA season. The network’s slate will include the NBA Mexico City Game 2024 against the Miami Heat on November 2, and the team’s regular season opener against the defending champion Boston Celtics on October 24 (featuring a special one-hour pregame show).

   GOING GLOBAL

GRB Media Ranch said it will launch two Free Ad-Supported TV (FAST)) Channelsparanormal themed “The Unseen” and travel, food and culture channel “WNDR” (“Wander”) – in Q4 in the US., UK Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and has named Will Marks as principal advisor for digital. He was previously SVP, Business Development & Digital at Ovation Television.

Seven.One Studios International has extended its partnership with 9Network Australia, the home of “Married at First Sight Australia.” 9Network has acquired every season of every English-language version of “Married at First Sight” – including productions from the US, UK, New Zealand and South Africa. The broadcaster has also committed to acquiring all further English-speaking seasons produced. Following the acquisition, a “Married at First Sight” FAST channel has launched on 9Now.

Montreal-based Stingray has launched the Stingray Karaoke app on VIZIO, giving fans access to a library of over 100,000 licensed songs. The app allows users to search for songs by title, artist, lyrics, or genre in more than 30 languages and provides customization options, including skip, rewind, and fast-forward through songs, toggle background videos, and choose to sing with or without lead vocals.

All3Media International said Duck Soup’s drama “Lost Boys & Fairies” has been acquired by BritBox in the US and Canada. The drama is written by Daf James and is the first title from All3Media International’s first look deal with Duck Soup. In Europe, deals have also been signed with public service channel ARTE, which will launch the series in France and Germany. Premium SVOD service Filmin has taken a first window in Spain. The series launched earlier this year in Stan (Australia), Rialto (New Zealand), NPO (the Netherlands) SVT (Sweden) and YES (Israel).

Audience measurement company Kantar Media said Prime Video has joined its Cross-Platform View service in Spain, which delivers audience insights across linear and streaming on-demand services. Cross-Platform View is already available in Spain and Brazil and is part of Kantar Media’s measurement product portfolio, with cross-platform measurement services live or in deployment in 15 markets worldwide.

WildBrain is launching a new animated series “Badjelly,” inspired by the original Spike Milligan book and starring Miriam Margolyes and Rhys Darby, with Ava Diakhaby and Malachi Hall. Leading its live action lineup is mythical family drama, “Secrets at Red Rocks,” based on the bestselling children’s novel by Rachael King, while animated shortform series “Storybooth,” plus new seasons of “Malory Towers,” “Ruby and the Well,” “Boy & Dragon,” “Fireman Sam” and “Polly Pocket” are also on tap.

Paola Myriam Visconti, author of best-selling children’s book series “Dynowish,” is partnering with UAE-based producer and distributor TwelveP Animation and content creator josh Selig to develop “Dynowish” into a new animated television series for kids 8-12. The IP will be presented at the upcoming MIP Jr. and MIPCOM markets.

   RATINGS

Fox News Channel delivered its second highest-rated third quarter in history, marking 91 consecutive quarters as the most-watched cable news channel in primetime during the third quarter of 2024, according to Nielsen.

The Weather Channel’s coverage of Hurricane Helene attracted more than 1.75 million viewers on September 26 during its most watched hour and was the No. 1 cable television network for the day (P25-54).

Fox’s NFL Singleheader had 17.2 million viewers last week, up 2% over last season’s comparable window. Through week 4 of the season, the NFL on Fox is averaging 19.2 million viewers, up 16% over last year’ average, making it Fox’s best start since 2016. Fox NFL Sunday averaged 4.49 million viewers, up 2% over last season, and through week 4 the show is averaging 4.958 million viewers, up 9% and the Sunday show’s best performance since 2019.

   EXECUTIVE MOVES

Warner Bros. International Television Production has named Ben Pays Managing Director of WBITVP Belgium, effective October 7. Pays most recently was a showrunner at All3Media Belgium and previously served as Creative Director and Head of Development at Lecter Media.

Derek Schnell has been promoted to regional director of news for Hearst Television’s NBC- and CW-affiliated stations in the western part of the country. He will also continue as news director for Hearst TV’s Sacramento, CA stations KCRA-TV and KQCA-TV.

OPMG’s precision marketing agency RAPP named Jeannine Falcone Global Chief Executive Officer. Falcone joins RAPP from Accenture Song, where she most recently served as Global Marketing Services and Strategic Integration Lead.

Original Productions (OP) named Alison Dammann to the newly created position of Head of Development. Dammann joins Fremantle from ITV America’s Good Caper Content where she developed numerous true crime and investigative projects across broadcast, cable and streaming. In addition, Jeff Bumgarner, who has been with OP since 2010, will be moving into a new role as Senior Vice President of New Business Development, focusing on creating new revenue streams via OP’s direct to consumer efforts.

   IN MEMORIAM

John Amos, who starred in landmark TV shows “Good Times” and “Roots,” died August 21 of natural causes. He was 84 years old. Amos’ big break came in 1970 with his role as weatherman Gordon “Gordy” Howard on the “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Amos also appeared in shows like “About the Andersons,” “The West Wing,” “Two and a Half Men” and “The Ranch.” His final television role will arrive in the forthcoming series “Suits LA.”

Former NBA star and humanitarian Dikembe Mutombo died Monday after a battle with brain cancer. He was 58 years old. Mutombo, one of the greatest shot blockers and defenders in NBA history, will perhaps be best known for his philanthropic efforts in his native Democratic Republic of Congo and throughout Africa.

History Channel’s “American Pickers” co-host Frank Fritz died September 30. He was 60. Fritz had stepped back from the program in 2020 for health reasons and suffered a stroke in 2022.
