Paramount Global is facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly violating New York’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) act during layoffs that occurred in September, when more than 300 employees lost their jobs in less than a week. The layoffs were part of an ongoing effort to cut Paramount’s domestic workforce by 15%. Notes the lawsuit, which was filed in New York’s Southern District Court on Wednesday, “New York WARN states that if an employee provides any employee with less than 90 days advanced notification of a plant shutdown or mass layoff, the employer shall provide that employee with 60 calendar days of wages and benefits.” Not so fast, responded a Paramount spokesperson, with the statement, “These claims are not grounded in any fact. Paramount employees entitled to Federal or State WARN notice received it.”

Hulu ordered a 20-episode season two of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.” The eight-episode season one premiere, which dropped September 6, was the most-watched unscripted show on Hulu this year. “There was a philosophical question raised in season one which was ‘Can #MomTok survive this?’ The answer unequivocally is yes! Spring 2025 get your dirty sodas ready!”, said Rob Mills, EVP, Unscripted and Alternative Entertainment, Walt Disney Television.

Disney Channel canceled “The Villains of Valley View” after two seasons. Posted series co-creator Chris Peterson on X, “While it was never our intention to end the series on a cliffhanger, we hope that Amy, Hartley and the Maddens will live on in your hearts (and on Disney+) forever.”

“Batwheels” was renewed for a third season on Cartoon Network. The Batman series for preschoolers follows a group of super-powered crime-fighting vehicles along with DC superheroes.

Sinclair announced the return of Sinclair’s Reporting, Producer and Weather Academies, a series of free, interactive, virtual workshops for college students interested in pursuing a career in journalism. The 90-minute sessions will run throughout the third week of November and assist students seeking to build a career in reporting, producing or weather.

“Black Comedy in America,” a new docuseries hosted by comedians Tiffany Haddish, Chris Spencer and Ryan Davis, premieres Tuesday, October 15 at 10p on VICE TV. The series explores the lore and legends of Black comedy.

WEBTOON and Overtime have teamed to create webcomic series “Overtime Elite,” following a young man who puts his hoop dreams aside to support his family. The series, the first collaboration between the companies, will have over 50 episodes, with new episodes rolling out Thursdays.

Acorn TV crime drama “Whitstable Pearl” returns Monday, October 21 for a six-episode season three.

“The Confidante,” a limited series from France, debuts Friday, October 11 on Max. The four-part psychological thriller follows a Parisian who witnesses the 2015 terrorist attacks and latches onto a community of survivors.

On a roll: Recreational vehicle channel RVTV has launched on DirecTV. “This launch advances our mission to not only diversify our content offerings but to also connect advertisers with avid audiences,” said Amy Leifer, Chief Advertising Sales Officer at DirecTV Advertising.

Integral Ad Science announced the availability of its Quality Attention™ measurement product for publishers and sell-side platforms. The continued quest for premium inventory and brand-safe environments in the programmatic ecosystem led to +47% growth YoY in the Premium Programmatic market during the first 8 months of 2024, according to new data from Guideline, and Retail Media grew +33% YoY in the same period, contributing to an overall +8% YoY in the US advertising market. Guideline’s Programmatic Marketplace Insights data points include:
· Overall, Digital media spend grew +16% in the year-to-August, while Traditional media dropped -5%.
· Total DSP/SSP-transacted programmatic buying (+26% YoY) doubled the pace of direct-sold insertion orders (+13%) in Jan-Aug 2024 YoY.
· Within Programmatic, ad spend in open exchanges grew +10% YoY, a moderate pace when compared to the +47% YoY growth of Premium Deals (PMP/PG).
· Travel Services was the product category group growing its programmatic premium investment at the fastest pace (+75% YoY) and Technology the one investing a higher share of Premium vs Open Programmatic (66%/34%).
· Retail Media (+33% YoY) and Social (+27%) were the fastest-growing digital media segments beyond Programmatic Premium.

The premiere of ABC’s Ryan Murphy procedural “Dr. Odyssey” drew 13.6 million cross-platform viewers in its first week, up 230% over its live + same day audience.

The week of September 2, Netflix had the top two shows on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming chart. “The Perfect Couple” was number one, with 1.9 billion viewing minutes, followed by “Rebel Ridge,” with 1.1 billion minutes. “Family Guy” on Hulu came in third, with 1.06 billion minutes.
