Cynopsis: Kids!
11.27.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

CynKids had a great time at Nickelodeon HQ, visiting with EVP research and planning Ron Geraci and SVP consumer insights Jane Gould, who presented the net’s new Consumer Insights study of post-millennial kids, born since 2005. Among findings:
Media & Tech Use
* Media consumption among kids has grown over the past four years to nearly 35 hours per week, presenting an increase of 2.2 hours since 2009.
* TV remains the dominant viewing device. Usage is up 12% vs. nine years ago, according to Nielsen, despite the many alternative devices available to them including tablets, computers and games consoles also growing in use. “There’s a preconception that there’s media fragmentation, but for kids it’s media multiplication,” Geraci told me. “More is more.”
* Computer and gaming consoles make up 27% of daily media consumption. While tablet adoption rates have increased, their adoption still represents a small slice of the pie, at 8%.
* Gaming is kids No. 1 activity across devices. 96% of kids say they use their computer for gaming, compared to 88% on the tablet and 86% on the smartphone.
* Three-quarters of kids say they watch short form video on their iDevice, and consuming long-form programming is growing: more than half of kids with an iDevice now watch long-form content, a 23% lift over last year.
(Device data was pulled from Nickelodeon’s device tracker taken in May 2013; Cited Nielsen research is from data compiled from September 2012 to August 2013)
Family:
* 8 out of 10 kids say they wish they could spend more time with their parents.
* Kids have very close relationships with their siblings, with 7 in 10 saying they love their sibling “no matter what.”
* Kids say they trust their mother more than anyone else, with 93% saying they trust her more than their father, doctor, policemen and the President.
* 8 in 10 parents discuss purchases with their kids ahead of time because there are emotional benefits in making decisions together.
Peers:
* Kids believe fitting in with peers is less important than being different, a contrast to the thinking of their predecessors, the Millennials.
* 8 in 10 kids say they care more about getting good grades than being popular.
Self-Perception:
* 8 in 10 kids today believe that they are smarter than most other kids their age.
* Humor is important to this generation. 74% describe themselves as funny.
* They are self-assured, with 96% saying they believe they can accomplish anything they want to if they work hard enough.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

SeaWorld’s Sea Rescue hit the 100 million-viewer mark last week. The series, which airs as part of the Litton’s Weekend Adventure block on ABC, is in its third season. The company’s newest Weekend Adventure entry, The Wildlife Docs, premiered to more than 1 million viewers this season.

Move over, Gandalf. In advance of the Dec. 12 theatrical release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Nickelodeon is getting its Lord of the Rings groove on with the Bubble Guppies primetime special, The Puppy and the Ring. Airing Thursday, Dec. 5, at 8p, the adventure features Jeffrey Tambor as the voice of the evil Night Wizard who has stolen the Ring of the Sun. Says Tambor, “My twin boys will go ballistic when they hear Daddy.  Ah to be ‘cool’ in one’s own living room.”

Instant hit… Nickelodeon ordered a second season of Instant Mom, the family comedy for Nick at Nite and NickMom. The Tia Mowry-Hardrict-starring scripted series also got the green light for six additional eps to add to its first season, bringing the season total to 26 episodes. The show airs regularly on Nick at Nite Sundays at 8:30p and the NickMom comedy block on Nick Jr. It draws 1.2 million total viewers per episode since its Sept. 29 premiere.

Disney XD is getting in the holiday spirit with the programming promo Winter Wonder What?!, airing Dec. 2-7 and featuring winter-themed eps of series Lab Rats, Crash & Bernstein and Packages from Planet X, plus holiday movies like Disney’s A Christmas Carol Phineas and Ferb Christmas Vacation and Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Cartoon Network will air 24 hours straight of holiday specials and movies beginning at 6a Christmas Eve. Then at 7p on New Year’s Eve, the net will bring a special episode of Regular Show, New Year’s Kiss, featuring Rigby in a madcap mission to stop Mordecai from kissing a girl that night.

In other Cartoon news, the network will bring back the series Ninjago: Masters of Spinijitzu in 2014 with four one-hour specials. To help generate buzz, Toys’R’Us from Dec. 8-14 will give a limited-edition Ninjago poster to customers who make an in-store purchase of any Lego toy.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Cartoon Network started production on the first Asia Pacific-made series developed for global distribution. Exchange Student Zero, about the havoc that ensues when two boys bring an anime character from a fantasy card game to life and pass him off as an exchange student, will hit the global airwaves in 2015. Series tagline is: “300 super-powered cards. Two different worlds. One crazy adventure.” It’s directed by Aussie shop Bogan Entertainment Solutions’ (BES) Patrick Crawley. Also up from BES is TV special Monster Beach, the story about “surfing, scary locals and two kids battling to save their worst nightmare.” Silas Hickey, Turner’s Hong Kong-based creative director, animation, is exec producer for both productions.

MORE KIDS NEWS

The Parents Television Council released its annual Best and Worst TV Advertisers List, based on the degree of sponsorship of family friendly programming. The big winner: Walmart. The report also noted that brands owned by Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Smucker’s, Clorox and Johnson & Johnson performed “very favorably, just as they had in past years.” The “most disappointing” brand, said the report, was McDonalds.

How excited is Sprout president Sandy Wax about becoming a full-fledged member of the NBCU family? “Our integration into Bonnie Hammer’s Cable Entertainment group is a testament to her vision for the future of Sprout. Sprout’s acquisition is a huge vote of confidence for our long term potential,” she tells CynKids. “We see tremendous opportunity to grow both our on- and off-channel initiatives, including our newly launched consumer products program.” Building on synergies with sister nets including USA, Bravo and Oxygen, which helped tout the launch of The Chica Show, Sprout recently returned the favor. For the Modern Family’s recent syndication launch on USA, “Sprout was able to welcome the show through greetings from our Sunny Side Up Show hosts,” Wax says.

Nick Radio is off and running. After launching Sept. 30, it ranked as the No. 1 iHeartRadio original station for the month of October and set a new record as the platform’s highest-trafficked digital station launch to date.

It’s baaack… Japanese toymaker Bandai is relaunching Tamagotchi under the new brand Tamagotchi Friends, complete with a multiplatform, multidemo product line. Tamagotchi Friends will launch globally beginning this fall, starting with animated webisodes that debuted globally Nov. 23 to coincide with Tamagotchi’s 17th birthday. The Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. app, which debuted in February, has had more than 2.7 million downloads.

Beginning Saturday, Nov. 30, Hub Network will move Spooksville to its new time period at 5:30p ET/2:30p PT for the remainder of the fall original episodes.  The fall finale will air Saturday, Dec. 21; new eps will return next spring.

Saban’s Power Rangers are taking over NYC this week, including an advanced screening of a new Power Rangers Megaforce ep at The Scholastic Store, and appearances at Macy’s Family Fun Day and food rescue organization City Harvest. The week wraps with the heroes of upcoming series Power Rangers Super Megaforce making their official debut in the 87th annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
