Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Warner Bros.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 opens in a record 356 Imax theatres from this Friday, November 19, 2010.  This marks the largest Imax release ever with the movie’s debut in 239 Imax screens domestically, simultaneous to the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 release in North America.  Additionally, the movie will also open on 117 Imax screen internationally, 97 of which open this Friday and the rest over the course of the next four weeks.  Further international Imax theaters will be added.

India’s Toonz Animation expands has set up a new production unit in Montreal, Canada, Toonz Entertainment Global (TEG).  TEG is a joint venture between Toonz Group and Mediabiz International, Canada.  The new TEG, Canada will focus its energies on producing both animation and live-action properties.  Projects currently on the slate include the Speed Racer TV Series (season.2) and HTDT (TV series) both budgeted at US$6.2 million. TEG, Canada plans to invest in projects worth US$200 million over the next three years.  Toonz is part of Geneva-based Comcraft Group.

Omnilab Media and Oktobor, its visual effects, animation and digital studio, have opened the doors to their new Auckland New Zealand-based CG animation studio, Oktobor Animation, in conjunction with US-based Backyard Animated Pictures.  The opening ceremonies featured the world premiere of the new studio’s first completed episode of the DreamWorks’ new CG animated series Penguins of Madagascar.  Oktobor Animation plans to create about 300 jobs in the next four years, with 80 already on staff, which it expects to grow to 120 by middle of next year.  The studio will also offer three-month paid internships several times a year.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will premiere Young Justice, a one-hour animated special, on Friday, November 26 at 7p.  Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on DC Comics, the special introduces viewers to the teen characters that star in the Young Justice animated series that will launch in January 2011.  Introduced at the Cartoon Network upfront in April, Young Justice features teen super heroes including Robin (aka Dick Grayson), Aqualad (aka Kaldur ‘Ahm), Kid Flash (aka Wally West), Superboy (aka Conner Smith), Miss Marian (aka M’Gann M’Orzz) and Artemis (aka Cissie King).  Lending their voices to the young super heroes, respectively, are Jesse McCartney, Khary Payton, Jason Spisak, Nolan North, Danica Mckeller and Stephanie Lemelin.

PBS Kids Go! will launch the new Design Squad Nation (10 episodes) series, a spin-off of the engineering-focused kids competition series Design Squad, Wednesday, January 26, 2011 (check local listings).  Targeted to tweens/teens/families, Design Squad Nation will follow engineer co-hosts Judy Lee and Adam Vollmer as they travel across the country and around the world working with kids to get active, take risks, collaborate with different people and use science, math, and technology to solve real problems and create things.  The Design Squad Nation website ( http://to.pbs.org/designsquadnation ) features activities corresponding to challenges on the show to figure out solutions.  The site also features a blog with a range of engineering and DIY content from across the web.  Viewers can also follow Design Squad Nation on Facebook and Twitter.  Design Squad Nation is produced by WGBH Boston, with major funding provided by the National Science Foundation.  Funding for the series also comes from NASA, Northrop Grumman Foundation, and The Lemelson Foundation, with additional funding provided by Noyce Foundation, United Engineering Foundation (ASCE, ASME, AIChE, IEE, AIMEE), Motorola Foundation, and IEEE.

The BBC’s CBBC (UK) picks up two more seasons of the kid-targeted comedy Dani’s House (for a total of 26×30 new episodes) from The Foundation, a unit of Zodiak Media Group.  The Foundation is currently in pre-production on season 4 (13×30) and season 5 (13×30) of the series, which are slated to debut on CBBC in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

In other CBBC happenings, CBBC Newsround, the long running kid-aimed BBC (UK) news series, will air two specials focused on the lives of kids growing up in Afghanistan.  Hosted by Sonali Shah, the first program, Growing Up In A War Zone: A Newsround Special, will premiere Monday, November 22 at 6:15p, with the second, The Children Of Kabul: A Newsround Special debuting Monday, November 29 at 6:15p.

Age of Learning, a new company formed by some of the management team behind Neopets.com, launches educational ABCmouse.com ( www.abcmouse.com ) Early Learning Academy in the US and Canada.  Designed to help K2-6 (preschoolers, pre-k and kindergarten), and support the efforts of parents and teachers, with early learning childhood skills (e.g. reading, math, early science, social studies, art and music), the site feature 2,000+ different curriculum-based activities (online books, games, puzzles, songs, printables), which have been developed with education experts and feature various characters.  ABCmouse.com offers kid users a rewards system that recognizes their successes and aims to encourage them to continue to the next learning levels and lessons.  There area wide range of custom lessons plans across six academic levels for K2-6.  ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy features no advertising, pop-up ads, or links to other website.  Families can subscribe to ABCmouse.com for US$7.95/month and US$79.00/year.  The service will be available for free to all public schools in the US and Canada that apply for the program.

Vans, the footwear and apparel company, launches Offthewall.tv ( www.offthewall.tv ) its new interactive TV network that focuses on “Vans’ brand of youth culture” and board sports (skate, surf, snow, wake), BMX and motocross via exclusive original video content (new and from Vans’ archive) including individual features, short and long form programming.  The site is searchable by categories and search terms, allows users to share via Facebook and twitter and embed links on their own sites, as well as edit certain videos via a Mashable player.  Additionally, iPad compatibility will be available soon.  Offthewall.tv debuts with four new series:

  • Collaboratory – a documentary series focusing on individuals and brand that collaborate with Vans designers for special projects.
  • Adventures with Chris – poet/journalist of skate, Chris Nieratko show viewers what life is like for the Vans skate team and skate celebrities.
  • Time and Space – the series follows artists as they put together an exhibition – the series debuts with artist Dennis McNett.
  • Yo Gabba Gabba! – the network launches an exclusive series of five original shorts developed by the series creators and drawing from the worlds of action sports and music – as each Gabba Land character introduces their own new Vans shoe.
  • Get Down with Grosso (launching soon) – features Jeff Grosso offering insight into 20+ years of being a professional skateboarder.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Rainbow inks a raft of new licenses in Southern Europe for its girl-targeted property PopPixie (52×13).  New license deals include: Giochi Preziosi enters into a deal for toys (including arts and crafts, outdoor and electronic) in its key territories of Italy, Spain and Greece; in Italy, GA Ombrelli create branded umbrellas; Hachette takes the publishing rights in France; Big Picture sings on to handle VOD, DVD and Blu-ray in Spain; and Lusomundo enters into a DVD deal for Portugal.

Egmont, a UK kid’s licensed character publisher, unveils a new marketing endeavor for the Thomas & Friends Story Library Series, which includes several new promotional partnerships.  The effort is part of the 65th anniversary celebration of Thomas the Tank Engine.  House of Fraser, a department store in the UK and Ireland, will be giving away books at its stores with kidswear departments, as well as on its website, to customers that make a kidswear purchase over US$48.00.  The department store is also running an online content.  This Saturday, November 20, copies of Thomas & Friends Story Library Series books will be poly-bagged in The Guardian and distributed nationwide at 400 Starbucks stores in the UK.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ten-year Cartoon Network veteran and artist, Jacob Escobedo, is named VP/Creative Design, for both the Cartoon Network and Adult Swim Creative Group.  Escobedo, who will continue to be based in Atlanta, will oversee all print, event and collateral design for Adult Swim, Boomerang and Cartoon Network, as well as all broadcast design for Cartoon and Boomerang. Escobedo reports directly to Michael Ouweleen, SVP and Group Creative Director, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang.  Escobedo was previously Creative Director for Adult Swim.
