In probably the single most anticipated rights clearance in its history, Apple (Computer) officially announced a deal with Apple (Corps) and EMI to release the Beatles’ remastered studio albums with iTunes LPs, the two-volume “Past Masters” compilation and the classic “Red” and “Blue” collections, along with the special digital release “Beatles Box Set” featuring the exclusive “Live at the Washington Coliseum” 1964 concert film – the Beatles’ very first concert on U.S. soil. Single albums are now available for purchase and download for $12.99 each, double albums for $19.99 each and individual songs for $1.29 each. There’s not much in the way of extras being released with the digital tracks, however – begging the question who’s really going to buy something they’ve probably ripped from CD years ago.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Avail-TVN launched its 3D Video On Demand (VOD) movie offering with Verizon FiOS and will offer feature films from most of the major studios including The Last Airbender; Saw: The Final Chapter; Alpha and Omega; and Piranha. The 3D VOD service, available in both MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, does not require any additional equipment or upgrades to service providers’ existing equipment. 
 
USA Today is partnering with CBS News to extend the reach of USA Today/CBS News: Senior Moment, a baby boomer-themed cross-platform series that will begin on The Early Show this morning. The series will also be made available to all Gannett newspaper sites.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Foodie site Delish.com, a joint venture between Hearst Magazines Digital Media and MSN, debuted “Taste of Place,” a new 48-episode original MSN Video series that will examine the connection between fresh, local ingredients and the people connected to the land and waters that produce them.
 
Babelgum and British production company PRSNL Pictures have today announced a deal to secure the exclusive online and mobile release of “Dark Fibre,” a docu-fiction feature directed by Jamie King and Peter Mann with special appearances by scholar Noam Chomsky and Canadian director Peter Wintonick (Manufacturing Consent). Shot on location in Bangalore against the background of the 2009 elections, the “fictional documentary” examines the paradoxes and tensions inherent in India’s “information city.”
 
AOL
‘s new morning news round up AOL Daybreak officially launched this week, produced by a veteran TV network crew and hosted by Lindsay Campbell of Wallstrip fame.
 
Buzzmedia announced an exclusive multi-year partnership focused on integrated content, marketing, development and sales with photo sharing platform Plixi (formerly TweetPhoto). The company will work with Plixi to create integrated content offerings, marketing programs and branded entertainment campaigns across multiple platforms including Plixi.com and mobile applications.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Despite reaching less than 10% of the online U.S. population, Hulu managed to double the amount of video ad impressions of its closest competitor in Oct. to reach a record 1.1 billion impressions, according to ComScore. Americans viewed more than 4.6 billion video ads in October, with Tremor Media Video Network ranking second overall (and highest among video ad networks) with 533 million ad views, followed by ADAP.TV (435 million) and BrightRoll Video Network (374 million). CWTV.com led all sites in terms of frequency, serving up over 50 ads/viewer. The duration of the average online content video was 5.0 minutes, while the average online video ad was 0.4 minutes. Video ads accounted for 12.8% of all videos viewed and 1.2% of all minutes spent viewing video online. Video ads also reached 45 percent of the total U.S. population an average of 34 times during the month.

OpenAmplify unveiled a new a content management toolkit named Ampliverse designed to improve the accuracy of online advertising and social CRM. Digital publishers can use Ampliverse to manage needs-specific taxonomies to classify web content according to their unique requirements including the ability to classify and understand user-generated content.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Motorola Ventures, the company’s strategic investment arm, announced it has made an investment in advanced TV advertising firm BlackArrow as an extension to the company’s series C round of funding. Motorola and BlackArrow said they will develop integrated addressable media and ad solutions for set-top boxes and mobile devices, as well as for “cloud-based, hosted video services” and IP video delivery.
 
Video advertising technology company YuMe, Inc. announced it has received a strategic investment from Intel Capital, Intel Corporation’s global investment organization.
 
Canada’s nextMEDIA digital media conference struck a partnership with NATPE||Content to launch two interactive entertainment programs at the upcoming NATPE 2011 Market and Conference in Miami, FL – “the Next Great App Competition” and “the Digital Launch Pad.”
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
The online media value chain (comprising CDNs, OVPs and Video Advertising Networks) is forecast to generate $2.3 billion in top line revenues in 2010, according to a new AccuStream Research projection, with 56.5% of that figure linked predominantly to CDN-powered video distribution, video platform services and content monetization. The combined market grew by an estimated 30% in 2010. Value chain analytics are calculated from total video views, CDN (video contract, and total CDN revenue), OVPs (accounts, pricing and revenue) and video advertising networks (revenue calculated by provider, billing models, and specialty: pre-roll, in-banner, overlay and search).
 
Online Gaming and Social Networking is expected to drives Virtual Goods revenue to over $7 Billion in 2010, according to In-Stat. The emergence of social and casual games on social networking sites and mobile phones has created a 2D virtual goods market that currently exceeds $2 billion, with the top 10 virtual goods sites earning 73% of worldwide revenues.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
Samsung is planning to release its own line of broadband-enabled TV’s utilizing the Google TV platform, per Bloomberg. The company expects to make a product announcement in Jan.
 
Google is preparing to launch another mobile phone running on the next-generation “Gingerbread” version of Android that will include a built-in payment system similar to models available in Japan that would act as mobile credit cards. Google’s Nexus One was released earlier this year, but quickly pulled from the market after tepid sales.
 
The print edition of O, The Oprah Magazine has come to the iPad with the release of the Dec. edition, including bonus material and interactive features which take advantage of the device’s Multi-Touch interface. The $3.99 issue opens with a full-screen video introduction from Oprah herself along with a video introduction from Oprah accompanying her monthly column, “What I Know for Sure.”
 
College Football’s Southeastern Conference (SEC) and XOS Digital have teamed to launch an official SEC iPad app for $4.99, featuring live scores, standings, polls, photo galleries and original video programs including “Barnhart’s College Football,” “SEC GameDay Central” and “Countdown to Kickoff.”

Integrations seem to be the name of the game this week to expand partnerships and make it easier to access a portal or a social network’s leading services. Yahoo announced it will integrate Twitter, Facebook and Zynga broadly on its Web properties, and the company is introducing a new beta version of Yahoo Messenger packing in a number of promising social networking features. For instance, starting this week, the first phase of integration with Zynga will allow people to launch, play, and share some of Zynga’s most popular games such as Mafia Wars and FishVille directly from Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Games, Yahoo Toolbar or Yahoo Pulse. The company also announced locally relevant “Quick Apps” – including a new and improved Yahoo! Sketch-a-Search for visually zeroing in on a street or neighborhood to find local restaurants, available across connected devices, including PCs, iPhones, and iPads. Finally, Yahoo is joining the local couponing revolution with the launch of Local Offers, partnering with more than 20 online and offline providers including Groupon and Living Social to build a repository of local offers on the Internet. (The offering is available in only in the U.S. upon launch.)
