Walt Disney Co. CEO Bob Iger has been named to the Board of Apple, the company announced yesterday evening. The appointment of Iger will help maintain the close link between Disney and Apple that has existed ever since the media giant purchased Pixar, a studio which Steve Jobs co-founded and was the first studio to license content to iTunes . For what it’s worth, last month Disney had announced that Iger would step down from his position as CEO in 2015 and to a different position within the conglomerate before exiting all-together. Apple has also appointed Genentech chairman Art Levinson as the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board, a post which was also vacated with the passing of Steve Jobs.
Google continues to tinker with and update both Google+ and its search offering. First, the company announced that it will enable access to brand pages for social media management tools that are used by businesses when managing their social media presences across multiple platforms. Specifically, six management tools: Buddy Media, Vitrue, HootSuite, Context Optional, Hearsay Social and Involver have been given the green light to test functionality with Google+’s brand pages. For now access is limited to Circles, publishing and monitoring management. However, Google says that it is experimenting with these platforms to get feedback on presumably what works, what doesn’t and what should come next. Second, on the search front, Google is now offering a new option located on the left-side toolbar called “Verbatim,” which allows users to perform searches when wanting exact matches for their query terms. Previously, a user could do this using quotations around the term or the “+” symbol. Seeing as “+” is now an exclusive function of the Direct Connect offering on Google+, the company has decided to provide this alternative option. Quotations are still fine, though.
Transforming the World Through Comedy, a new annual initiative conceived by several comedy industry veterans that seeks to raise funds for worldwide catalytic philanthropy will launch its first fundraiser tonight. Hosted by three comedy clubs in New York, LA and Chicago, the event will be streamed live at TWTComedy.com and will feature performances from comedians including Colin Quinn, Marc Maron, Neal Brennan, Jeff Ross and more. The initiative has partnered with the yoga-based charity Off the Mat Into the World. Tickets for the event can still be purchased through the website.
In advance of the premiere of All in the Line with Joe Zee on the Sundance Channel, Joe Zee will host YouTube’s Celebrity Playlist section today with his favorite fashion and style videos. YouTube will also stream three full episodes of the show, including a preview of the season 2 premiere and two full episodes from season 1, via the Sundance’s branded channel on the video site.
BrightRoll, a video ad network whose revenues have doubled every year for the past three years, recently secured a $30 million round of Series C financing led by Trident Capital. While most of BrightRoll’s revenues are still generated from pre-roll video ads, they don’t necessarily play in front of videos. In fact, a third of BrightRoll’s video ad inventory is for gaming sites to be played in between levels, reports TechCrunch. The company will direct the new funds towards new businesses, such as a video ad exchange, mobile video ads and international investments.
Josh Quittner, editorial director of Flipboard, admitted that the company declines advertisements that “are ugly, or distasteful or not keeping with the general tone or spirit of our community,” according to a report from AdAge Digital. “We… believe in the beauty of the page,” he continues, “The war we’re trying to fight is the war of good taste.” With that in mind, Quittner indicates that Flipboard is currently working on advertising products that would seize the benefits of both print and digital. For example, a product which makes an ad that appears between the pages of a digital version of a magazine on Flipboard look like a cover of a magazine. Or as AdAge notes, an ad that itself becomes content that users would want to consume.
Fotopedia is partnering with Hakuhodo, one of Japan’s largest ad agencies, to launch a new global advertising program to drive interest for Japan as a tourism destination. The campaign is built around a new app called Fotopedia Japan and Japan-centric stories in Fotopedia Magazine featuring full-screen ads, which seek to establish Narita International Airport, a Hakuhodo client, as a gateway to Japan. Content will include stories, photos, interactive maps, a trip builder and other forms of media encouraging users to explore and learn more about Japan and its culture. Both the app and the digital magazine are available for free.
Yahoo officially announced yesterday that it’s “commencing an all cash tender offer to acquire the outstanding shares of common stock of interclick, inc. at a price of $9 per share.” interclick is a provider of digital advertising technology and services that helps marketers wade through the online data clutter to improve audience targeting. As indicated earlier this month, Yahoo’s tab for the acquisition will be $270 million total.
Great Lakes Data Systems‘ WinCable subscriber management and billing system has been integrated with Clearleap‘s Stream on Demand solution. The solution is a cloud-based IP content management and delivery system meant to enable TV service providers the opportunity to build operator-branded subscription services, similar to what Netflix, Hulu and Amazon do, for connected TVs, set-top boxes and other connected devices.
As part of the ongoing spectrum battle in Washington, D.C., the Coalition for Free TV and Broadband and the Sinclair Broadcasting Group have released a Broadcast Overlay Report. The report seeks to provide an alternative to the proposed broadcast television spectrum auction, which the Coalition argues is projected to raise less than $20 billion net, by outlining a plan that will “bring television into the future” and raise $60 billion for the U.S. Treasury. According to the report, a Broadcast Overlay would use high power/high tower broadcast facilities to transmit broadcast services covering a large area while still being able to converge with unicast services offered by other wireless operators.
In-Stat predicts that in-flight Wi-Fi related revenues will surpass $1.5 billion in 2015. In making the forecast, the report cites the increase in Wi-Fi usage, the number of planes deployed and new providers entering the market, as well as the expansion of the market beyond the U.S. and into Europe and the Middle East as factors driving growth. Among the other relevant data from the findings include the increase in take rates from 4% in 2010 to 7% in 2011; and tablets and smartphones becoming the preferred device with which to connect aboard a flight.
Green is Universal, a green awareness initiative from NBCUniversal, now has an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Green Square is a location-based app, powered by Foursquare technology, which offers users green information and facts about the popular landmarks, parks and restaurants they’ve checked into. For example, if a user checks-in to the Empire State Building, they will learn about the skyscraper’s eco-friendly makeover which resulted in it becoming LEED-gold certified. For users of Foursquare, the app will reward additional green-centric badges when checking in at specific sites and events.
A+E Networks Digital Media has launched a Facebook game based on its popular series Storage Wars. The app lets fans test their mettle at bidding and auctioning. It is the second Facebook-based game from A+E Networks after Pawn Stars: The Game, which was released in January 2011 and has amassed over 700,000 unique visitors per month.
Here’s something handy to have at your side on College Football Saturdays: Jack’s Rosters, a sports app created by a fifth grader from Florida, which offers users quick access to the complete rosters and schedules for all 120 Division I college football teams. Available for $0.99 in the Apple App Store, the young developer has plans to create a similar offering for the NFL and high school sports.
Jonathan Gibs has been appointed by NBCUniversal to the newly-created post of Senior Vice President of Digital Research for NBCUniversal’s Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media division (E&DN/IM). Reporting directly to president of digital media Nick Lehman and EVP of brand planning and strategic insights Tony Cardinale, Gibs will lead the research for the stand alone digital businesses within the company’s portfolio, which include DailyCandy, Fandango and Television Without Pity. Gibs will also work with the research heads at the company’s online digital properties including Bravo Media, Oxygen Media and Telemundo. The hiring is part of a concerted effort to expand the insights and research capabilities for NBCUniversal’s portfolio of properties.
Art Santos has joined social media advertising platform provider MediaBrix as its new Vice President of Business Development. “Santos’ extensive experience developing relationships with leading game publishers and developers will be extremely valuable as we continue to scale our Social Flex offering,” says MediaBrix CEO Ari Brandt. Social Flex is a technology for app and game developers who want to monetize users who do not purchase virtual goods. Santos will assume his post based out of the company’s New York offices.
PubMatic has hired Steve Pantelick to be its new Chief Financial Officer. Pantelick will bring his experience working in an executive capacity with companies such as Kodak Gallery, Blockbuster, Cadbury Schweppes and Aggregate Knowledge to his new role at PubMatic. PubMatic is a media technology company that provides an inventory, data and ad revenue optimization platform for digital publishers.
Hearst Digital Media (HDM) has made some additions to its content programming staff. Allison Mezzafonte has been promoted to Shelter Network Director and will oversee ElleDecor.com, HouseBeautiful.com and CountryLiving.com. Furthermore, Rachel Deschepper is the new Web Editor for CountryLiving.com, while Lauren Le Vine comes on board as the Web Editor for Redbookmag.com. Mezzafonte will report to HDM’s vice president of programming and product strategy Mark Weinberg, while Deschepper reports to Mezzafonte and Le Vine reports to Jennifer Barrett, the network director for Hearst’s Women’s Lifestyle network.

This one is for all of us history buffs (and lovers of neat things in general): Alwyn Collinson, a graduate student from Oxford University, has undertaken the massive and impressive goal of “live-tweeting” World War II as if it was happening right now (@RealTimeWWII ). Far from being a vanity project, Collinson uses multiple media forms to develop a very immersive take on the war. “I’m using eyewitness accounts, photographs and videos to give the feel that these tweets are coming straight from 1939,” Collinson told the BBC . The entire project, which began on August 31, 2011, reflecting what tweets could have been on August 31, 1939, will take 6 years to finish. The account has accumulated over 100,000 followers since its inception.
