Cynopsis: DIGITAL

5/09/07

Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, May 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the Cable Show 2007 in Las Vegas.

Disney-ABC Television group struck a deal with Cox Communications to provide episodes of prime time shows Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy, Lost and Ugly Betty for its FreeZone video on demand platform the day after the shows premiere on air. The streaming software will disable the fast-forward function to make it impossible for users to skip ads. A dynamic ad insertion system, to replace stale ads with more timely ones, should be in place by the time the service rolls out this fall. ABC will also syndicate its broadband player for Cox.net users in Orange County.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

New Site,” the working title the News Corp./NBCU digital portal venture now prefers, signed a multi-year content and distribution agreement with CNET Networks, encompassing online outlets CNET.com, TV.com and GameSpot. CNET is the first internet-initiated content partner for the venture.

Note to Readers: Are you tiring of waiting for a name for this venture? Send in your ideas for a moniker to [email protected] and we’ll see if we can’t come up with few suggestions!

Disney has sold 23.7 million shows and 2 million movies to date on iTunes, according President/CEO Bob Iger. Since September 92 million ad supported episodes have been requested on ABC.com. Ninety one million episodes have been initiated on DisneyChannel.com in the last year. When questioned by an analyst about iTunes pricing for movies (priced lower than what DVDs sell for in stores, which is preventing more studios from jumping on board,) Iger claimed the revenue split the company receives from both windows is identical.

NBC Universal’s DotComedy.com recruited a new line up of comedy video bloggers. The Remote Controller (Paul Goebel) offers twice-weekly rants on the state of broadcast TV. Sean Crespo was lured away from his own site drinkatwork.com to teach the craft of vlogging. Rhett & Link rip pop culture in perfect harmony. Beth & Val fulfill the pretty young thing requirement.

CBSNews.com disabled the comment function on existing and upcoming stories about presidential candidate Barack Obama to curb racial attacks. Editors had their hands full deleting nasty comments as they appeared.

The Late Show with David Letterman site on CBS.com will stream an exclusive webcast concert of Elvis Costello & the Imposters on Monday, May 14 at 8:25 pm ET, performed live from Ed Sullivan Theater. Elvis will perform two songs from his latest album, marking the 30th anniversary since his debut album My Aim is True. The performance will air on CBS Friday, May 18.

CBS Sports’ CSTV launched a series of High School Sports video on demand channels aggregating content from more than 20,000 U.S. high schools. LeBron James’ LRMR Innovative Marketing will assist in marketing, branding, promotion and sponsorship. CBS subsidiary MaxPreps will handle video streaming.

Hallmark Channel launched a new affiliate website to help operators promote the channel’s new on-air look featuring a library of interactive video including promos for original movies and recurring series. The site also offers cross channel spots for download.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Video sites looking to strike content deals with ABC/Disney should take heed of this list of criteria the group’s digital guru Albert Cheng ticked off at an NCTA session on Thursday:

  • Brand – the site must create a “halo effect” for the Disney/ABC brand
  • Digital Rights Management – good technology to prevent piracy
  • Attractive Financial Terms
  • Marketing – the site must utilize more than just viral marketing to promote its service
  • New And Different – does the partner do something the company can’t do itself?
  • Cable Bypass – is the site going to jeopardize existing network/affiliate relationships?

On the theme of marketing, “Blog Maverick” Mark Cuban weighed in on YouTube‘s new policy to share revenue with its high-traffic producers by asking how long it will be before the site becomes a corporate engine pushing only the top earners. The decision to include some and not all creators in the revenue sharing scheme has rankled many in blogging community.

ViDeOnline Communications
signed a multiyear VOD and SVOD deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution for Hong Kong VOD rights to all current feature-length movies as well as hundreds of hours of library titles. The deal also allows ViDeOnline to offer legal downloads through the online portal “08 Media,” which launched in Hong Kong in March of this year.

Me.com launched a Social Network Application Platform (SNAPP), helping online community builders monetize their networks. An agreement with Google AdSense allows free or PRO SNAPP service users to offer advertisers the opportunity to target affinity online groups. The SNAPP network was built to help cultivate deeper relationships with customers, partners or employees.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

The skirmish between the FCC and NCTA continued this week at the National Show. FCC chairman Kevin Martin opened the convention on Monday with renewed calls for digital multiplex must carry and a la carte pricing, which would allow consumers to cherry pick which networks they receive. NCTA President Kyle McSlarrow fired back on Tuesday, claiming government intervention was not necessary in what has become a marketplace of “intense competition.”

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts demoed the new DOCSIS 3.0 modem developed with CableLabs during The Cable Show’s general session yesterday. He downloaded 32 volumes of the Encyclopedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster’s dictionary in about 17 seconds, claiming it would have taken over 3 hours with today’s cable modems. The next generation modems, which will enable speeds of up to 150 megabits per second, will be tested this year with commercial deployments beginning as early as 2008. Conspicuously missing from the presentation was a video download.

AT&T projects it will increase spending on the rollout its of U-Verse IP-based TV service by as much as $1.4 billion by the end of 2008. This will bring total spending on the copper wire-delivered service to over $6 billion.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Publicis Groupe and Droga5 are set to launch a new website called Honeyshed that will stream branded entertainment programming, according to The Wall Street Journal. The three-tiered site will offer professionally produced studio content, webisodes created by Droga5 and promotions such as sweepstakes and giveaways.

Kraft Foods will be the first food advertiser to join virtual community Second Life. The company plans to sell products in a virtual supermarket on the site, with plans to eventually roll out up to 100,000 products.

Donovan Data Systems will offer advertising and media buying agencies access to the proprietary media database of Entertainment Communications Network.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

VOD revenue will reach $1.6 billion this year and grow to $3.9 billion by 2010, according to Convergence Consulting. More than 25 million households currently have access to VOD. Total views reached 2.2 billion in 2006, according to Rentrak, up from 1.5 billion in 2005.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Warner Bros. Television Group
named Telepictures VP/New Business and Sales Brett Bouttier to the newly created position of SVP, Digital. Brett will oversee digital distribution of WBTVG’s current shows, library content and original digital productions, reporting to Craig Hunegs, EVP/Business Management.

Multiplatform kids’ programming service Kabillion named Bob McPhee to EVP/Ad Sales. He will report to Bob Kabillion, CEO, and work out of Manhattan.

Ellen Siminoff was named to the board of directors of Zannel, Inc. The viral mobile entertainment network also announced the formation of an advisory board to help develop corporate and product strategies. Members of the Zannel Advisory Board include Ted Meisel, previous CEO of Overture; Peter Stranger, former COO of J. Walter Thompson, West and Anthony Stonefield, Chairman and CEO of Emotive Communications.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

TrivialTV.com is a comprehensive database/search engine for searching back in time to find out what aired on a given day and finding legal full-length videos of TV episodes online. Search the TV schedule for dates all the way back to 1983. Find awards given for shows in what may be the longest pull menu on the internet, spanning the A-Team to a show called Zula Patrol. Find links to legally view, rent or buy videos online. The site, built by professor Mike Vicic, a.k.a. Dr. TV, just added a weekly feature that will highlight new full-length series and seasons appearing online for the first time. Mike has agreed to share this list with us, so look for it here every Wednesday. Thanks Mike!
