Nickelodeon will develop shorts based on 12 ideas selected from its Animated Shorts Program, to potentially air on the network, online or on the Nick App. In its second year, the program drew almost 900 pitches from around the globe, compared to 600 last year. Concepts ran the gamut, including 2D, digital 2D, stop motion, CG and mixed media. Among the finalists: “Bug Salad,” from Carl Faruolo, the director of new series Sanjay and Craig; Brian Morante’s “Earmouse and Bottle”; “Welcome to Woodstump” and “Broats,” from artist Jack Cusamano.

What 1991 Disney animated film was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars? Beauty and the Beast. Kudos to: Pat Brady-CESD; David Garber-Linzack Productions; Duncan McIntosh-Sharp is the newest distribution partner to support Toon Goggles, the streaming kids TV platform. The electronics manufacturer is preloading a specially designed Toon Goggles app to its Sharp Aquos LED TVs worldwide, and adding it via firmware. The app contains 1,000-plus hours of kids and family content. Customers also have the option to upgrade to the enhanced service for $4.99 a month.
PROGRAMMING PICKS
Nickelodeon is powering up its NickMom primetime programming block. The net is bringing in Sherri Shepherd of The View to host the second season of standup comedy series NickMom Night Out (23 episodes). Nickelodeon also ordered a second season of talk show Parental Discretion with Stefanie Wilder-Taylor (20 episodes). NickMom Night out is taped in front of a live studio audience at the Times Square Studios in New York.
Disney Channel is cooking up a new iteration of its popular Disney Junior Night Light cooking series That’s Fresh. That’s Fresh: For Kids, culled from an interstitial series, premiered on the network May 6, with new episodes debuting every morning throughout the week. Hosted by chef Helen Cavallo, the series encourages kids to get involved in the kitchen and emphasizes healthy eating habits.
It’s a sibling throw-down in the latest incarnation of Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, “If I Were an Only Child,” premiering May 13 at 8 p.m. on Nickelodeon The half-hour special features kids counting down the annoying things their brothers and sisters do alongside celebs including Olympic medalist Natalie Coughlin, Nolan Gould (Modern Family), Mario Lopez (The Chica Show), Seth Meyers (SNL) counting down the top 10 annoying things they think brothers and sisters do.
Mark your calendars… The Hub will debut new shows in June–U.K. adventure-fantasy series Wizards vs Aliens, from exec producer Russell T Davies (Doctor Who) and Aussie series SheZow, featuring a 12-year-old boy who inherits the superhero persona of his deceased aunt.
DIGITAL UPDATE
The Force is strong with Electronic Arts. A month after LucasFilm pink-slipped most of the LucasArts staff working on the Star Wars games, the video game publisher scored an exclusive multiyear deal to produce Star Wars games for all platforms. The first titles are due in 2015. Under terms of the arrangement, LusasFilm parent Disney retains select rights to develop new titles for younger audiences within the mobile, social, tablet and online game categories; EA will focus more on the older male demo.
Scholastic Media is fueling its Magic School Bus line with The Magic School Bus: Dinosaurs for a host of LeapFrog devices. The cartridge game hits retail beginning in August and is compatible with the LeapPad1 and LeapPad2 tablets, LeapsterGS and Leapster Explorer. Also designed for kids ages 5-9, the companion game Magic School Bus: Dino Shuffle is available in the LeapFrog App Center.
It’s another Wow! Wow! Wubbzy app for Cupcake Digital, which this week releases the arcade-style Wubbzy’s Mash-Em Fun, based on the Nick Jr. character.

Calling all fan-Bobs. Nickelodeon is launching a short film competition based on the net’s most glam poster boy, SpongeBob SquarePants. Fans of all ages are invited to create original, SpongeBob-inspired short films for a chance to win a cash prize and trip for four people to a screening event in Hollywood. Contest runs May 6 through June 28 at www.SpongeBobSquareShorts.com; finalists will be selected by a panel of judges and fans will get to vote online for the winners.
Cablevision added Sprout to its Optimum TV and Optimum TV to Go, the distributor’s TV Everywhere offerings. Sprout’s lineup on Optimum TV to GO provides 60 hours of monthly programming including 15 hours of in Spanish, plus a mix of classic shows and originals like The Chica Show, Sesame Street, Bob the Builder, Barney & Friends and The Wiggles.
Sesame Workshop teamed with Ape Entertainment to release the first comic book featuring the Sesame Street cast. The comic edition features five interlocking covers, which when placed side by side depict an “on the Street” scene featuring Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, Grover and the whole Sesame Street gang. The premier issue also includes the first in a series of “How to Read a Comic” features for parents to help new comic readers.
INSIDE THE BELTWAY
Watchdog group the Parents Television Council is not happy about the FCC’s proposal to limit broadcast indecency complaints. The PTC declares this week “#NoIndecencyFCC” Week and is encouraging others to file public comments to the Commission’s proposal to limit complaints and take to social media to express their view that the proposal should be eliminated.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Disney Junior is going hi-def in Canada. The network is launching its HD channel on Rogers (channel 479) and EastLink (channel 748), free to eligible customers who already subscribe to the Disney Junior standard definition service.
Nickelodeon Germany is picking up the sixth season of DHX Media’s Johnny Test, and renewing seasons 1 and 2. The deal, with Viacom Media Networks, will see the 100th episode of the series debut in season 6, written by series creator Scott Fellows.
Mind Candy is feting five years of its global brand Moshi Monsters, which has spread from home in the U.K. to reach 80 million registered users for its web site and $250 million in global sales of its retail products.
Televix Entertainment is the new international distributor in Latin America for The Jim Henson Company’s film and television programming across all platforms, including television, home entertainment, digital and mobile.
LICENSING
Toy manufacturer TCG and Webkinz creator Ganz are partnering to develop toy and game product platforms for specialty and mass retailers.
Domo does DC Comics. Again. Following the success of the Domo DC Comics vinyl collectibles from Funko earlier this year, License 2 Play this summer will bring plush collectibles featuring Domo dressed as his favorite DC Comic Super Heroes thanks to a new licensing agreement with Big Tent Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products, on behalf of DC Entertainment. The line includes clip-ons costumes portraying Superman, Superman (Clark Kent), Batman (The Dark Knight), Batman (Classic), The Flash and Green Lantern.
Lawless Entertainment is the new worldwide rep for TV production, publishing, licensing and merchandising for kids property Raising Maddie, created by author Suanne-Margaret Hastings.
Gaming brand Subway Surfers’ global representative Ink signed the first licensing deals for the brand, across apparel, nightwear and arcade games. Firefly Brand Management is on board in the U.S., License Connection in Benelux, Segal Licensing in Canada and Active Merchandising in Germany.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT
AT&T, Ford and State Farm are on board as sponsors of Telemundo Media‘s new singing competition La Voz Kids. The show premiered Monday (May 6) to 1.7 million total viewers, 873,000 among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen data, ranking as the No. 1 reality premiere in the network’s history. Modeled loosely on NBC’s The Voice, La Voz Kids follows the journey of young Hispanic contestants ages 7-14 through blind auditions, battle rounds and work with celebrity music coaches Paulina Rubio, Prince Royce and Roberto Tapia. The series airs Sundays at 7p.m. (ET) on Telemundo. AT&T will become the official voting partner for the show, and the winner will receive a recording contract with Universal Music and a $50,000 prize presented by AT&T to help support his or her education.
Congrats to Adam Bonnett, whom Disney Channel is elevating to the newly created position of EVP, original programming, Disney Channels Worldwide. Bonnett, who reports to Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide, will continue to oversee all live-action development and current original series and movies for Disney Channel and Disney XD, plus casting and talent relations for those channels.
Jennifer Doig has been named chief marketing officer for Amazon Falls Company Limited, the developer of Cartoon Network Amazone near Bangkok, Thailand–the world’s first Cartoon Network themed waterpark. Doig formerly was with Turner Broadcasting in Hong Kong. Cartoon Network Amazone, set to open in late 2013.
Morgann Favennec joins Paris-based start-up company Superights as deputy managing director. Superights will distribute family and youth programs internationally; Favennec previously was head of children’s programming at M6 Group in France.
