The killing of Osama Bin Laden quickly replaced the royal wedding as the dominant topic of conversation in the social media sphere as the medium was primarily responsible for the spread of the late-breaking Sunday night news. Twitter claims bin Laden’s death generated the highest sustained rate of tweets ever. (According to multiple reports, the first tweet to specifically mention Bin Laden’s death was distributed by Keith Urbahn, the chief of staff at Donald Rumsfeld’s office, minutes before news outlets found out.) Within hours, bin Laden’s death was the subject of more than 2.2 million mentions on Twitter and nearly 40,000 blog posts, according to Sysomos, a firm that analyzes social media.

Ad network BrightRoll‘s 3rd annual Online Video survey is (unsurprisingly) the most bullish yet predicting further growth of the online video and mobile video ad mediums, at the expense of TV and online display ad budgets. Some 28% of buyers say they expect to see the greatest increase in ad spending in the online video category for 2011, followed by mobile video (27%) and social media (25%). Another 86% of respondents are shifting at least part of their display dollars over to video, while 64% plan to shift TV dollars to video. Budgets are also migrating from search, social media and direct response, though in more modest numbers at 28%, 27% and 26%, respectively.
Hackers’ infiltration of Sony‘s online division is much worse than originally thought as the company takes steps to limit further damage. Online role-playing game purveyor Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) (EverQuest, DC Universe Online) has shut down its network, admitting the personal info of 24.6 million users may have been pilfered. Stolen SOE account info includes names, addresses, email addresses and phone numbers; additionally bank account numbers and customer names and addresses were taken from accounts in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain. The theft is actually related to last month’s attack on PlayStation Network and Qriocity (which remain down pending further investigation), rather than a new attack.
Twitter has acquired Twitter control panel software maker Tweetdeck for $40 million – $50 million, according to news first reported by TechCrunch. Tweetdeck, which may be the last man standing after Twitter is announced it banning such apps, is the most popular client Adobe Air-based third party service known for good troubleshooting and tireless updates.
Could the longest-running tech patent lawsuit finally be over? Charlie Ergen’s Dish Network has agreed to make reparations to Tivo to the tune of $500 million to settle its seven-year patent dispute with the DVR maker after losing its most recent appeal. The terms of the deal include an initial payment of $300 million followed by 6 annual installments. The deal is meant to pave the way for a plan that will see Dish and Tivo work together at Blockbuster, the bankrupt home video retailer that Dish just acquired for $320 million.
Content Delivery Network Limelight Networks has acquired San Francisco-based Clickability for $10 million, a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider of web content management tools. Clickability helps marketers and online publishers such as the Minneapolis Star Tribune and PR Newswire to create, manage and publish content globally; track visitor experiences; and implement branding, social media, and demand generation campaigns on a website.
NATPE announced it is returning to Miami for its annual confab, at least for the next two years. The group reported a 35% bump in attendance last year (4,850 execs) a 20% increase in exhibiting countries and 116% jump in content buyers and acquisition executives. Online viewers watched a total of 488,051 streams of NATPE panels during the show, a new record.
By mid-2011, TV Everywhere services will be available to 81% of U.S. and Canadian pay-TV subscribers through their current service provider, according to Parks Associates‘ report. Nearly 40% of U.S. broadband consumers surveyed aged 18-34 find TV Everywhere services very appealing and multichannel providers are depending on the feature to help stem churn, prevent cord cutting and introduce cable services to adults who have never ordered it.
Despite the release of so many new 3D and broadband-connected sets, ownership of TV sets fell for from 98.9% to 96.7% of U.S. households (114.7 million total) last year according to Nielsen, the first drop in 20 years. Nielsen says that houses below the poverty line have not been able to afford new digital sets and antennas while younger viewers are increasingly turning to their PCs (and Over-the-top connected projectors) to view TV content.
Rumors continue to circulate that Amazon is preparing to launch a color screen LCD tablet to better compete with the iPad. The company reportedly placed orders with Quanta Computer for as many as 700-800k touchscreens, according DigiTimes, and will work with longtime Kindle partner E-Ink to develop the tablet, expected to begin shipping by the second half of 2011.

Online search is only as effective as the metadata it delves into to find what you’re looking for. PBS unveiled a new feature allowing users to search actual transcriptions from PBS.org‘s 7,000+ free videos , as well as text and other data. PBS.org users will now be able to sort, navigate and share search results using a complete set of filters, including program title, producer, local PBS station, airdate and content format from programs such as Nova, Frontline, American Experience and PBS NewsHour. For instance, a search of Osama Bin Laden pulled up excellent past reports from Frontline, NewsHour, PBS Featured and NOVA. (PBS also launched this page last night reviewing the decade-long hunt for the terrorist.) The new feature is powered by RAMP’s MediaCloud technology.
