At the NCTA Cable Show 2012, Verizon Wireless introduced Viewdini, a new Android app that lets users search for video content to watch on their mobile devices. Essentially a mobile video aggregator, Viewdini uses the company’s 4G LTE network to allow consumers to access movie and TV titles from a range of digital content providers, including cable operators, websites, and other video services. Consumers can search for content by title, topic, or actor. Viewdini will then let consumers know which video services have the title, and whether it is available for streaming at no additional charge, by subscription, to rent, or for purchase. Relevant content such as cast and crew info and links to similar titles will also be available via a click. Comcast Xfinifty, Hulu Plus, mSpot, and Netflix have been announced as participants at launch. Verizon says more video services, including Verizon FiOS, will be added soon. It will be available for 4G LTE Android devices (it’s free) later this month. Verizon says support for other operating systems will be added soon.
Adobe has unveiled Primetime Simulcast, as well as a series of other enhancements to Project Primetime, the company’s video platform for the delivery of ad-supported TV viewing experience across connected devices. Primetime Simulcast will offer clients the opportunity to publish and monetize broadcast content with video players, video streaming, dynamic ad insertion, and analytics, and will include support for existing broadcast workflows and content protected videos. Among the other announcements, Adobe Media Server 5, the company’s digital rights management (DRM) solution for premium video content, will enable the publishing and protection of video streams carrying studio-grade content, using a single DRM solution across connected devices. An update to Adobe Auditude will make it easier and more efficient to dynamically insert, target, and measure video ads, said Adobe, which made these announcements at the NCTA Cable Show 2012.
IFC is offering a sneak peek of their new comedy series Comedy Bang! Bang! and Bunk beginning this Thursday, May 24 on IFC.com, Hulu, and iTunes. On the first episode of Comedy Bang! Bang!, Amy Poehler appears as a guest as she discusses her career with host Scott Aukerman. Bunk, a game show that has comedians come on as contestants, features Eugene Mirman, Thomas Lennon, and Kumail Nanjiani in the first episode. IFC has also released the second episode of Comedy Bang! Bang!’s companion web series, Reggie Makes Music, with this one featuring Will Forte. Both series premiere on Friday, June 8, starting at 10pm ET.
Machinima has raised $35 million in a financing round led by Google, with participation from existing investors Redpoint Ventures and MK Capital. The capital will be used to invest in content and global sales operations, international expansion, distribution strategies, and product and technology initiatives. Machinima, which focuses on video content for the gaming community, has one of the most popular channels on YouTube. It reached 23.1 million U.S. viewers in April, and averaged the highest engagement among top YouTube partner channels, averaging 65 minutes per viewer (comScore). It wants to “lead the third wave of original video programming brands,” according to Machinima Chairman and CEO Allen DeBevoise.
Mixin is a social video start-up that enables users to mix their personal comments into online videos and then share the customized results using their social graph online. Its technology can be added to video content owners’ existing players. The company has now emerged from stealth mode, announcing initial distribution partners as well as over 200,000 users that tested out the service while it was in live beta mode over the past month. Mixin’s new partners are AnyClip, which allows users to access clips from over 12,000 feature films from participating studios such as Warner Bros, Universal, Vivendi, First Look, and Virgil Films, and Vlumbe, which delivers over 35 million video streams to 20 million users each month through online content properties such as eBaum’s World, Celebremix, and Your Daily Media (Vlumbe is geared toward young adults ages 18-34).
Comcast Spotlight, the ad sales division of the cable company, is launching Comcast Media 360 (CM 360), a new business unit that will focus on helping marketers take advantage of cross-platform advertising opportunities. Group VP Andrew Ward will lead the business unit. Comcast says CM 360 will develop scalable ad solutions based on three components: Targetability, Interactivity, and Accountability. CM 360’s marketing solutions include on-air advertising across networks in more than 80 markets, dynamic ad insertion, long-form VOD content, interactive program guide banner messages, Xfinity.com and mobile apps. Comcast is also announcing that Starcom MediaVest Group Exchange (SMGx) has secured the participation of three of its clients to employ CM 360 solutions in campaigns scheduled to run later this year.
DoubleVerify has launched AdView; a new solution that measures how long an ad is in-view within a user’s browser. The IAB and 3MS guidelines dictate that for an ad to be considered “viewed,” at least 50% of the ad has to be rendered within the browser window for at least one second. DoubleVerify asserts that AdView expands beyond those requirements by measuring brand exposure duration in multiple increments of five seconds. The company says AdView has been developed to overcome common ad barriers such as different zoom levels, switching tabs, screensavers, switching windows, multiple monitors, and more. The solution is paired with DoubleVerify’s verification technology that monitors whether or not ads are placed according to requirements on insertion orders. DoubleVerify has applied AdView for MRC accreditation.
A U.S. District Court judge in NY has dismissed part of a lawsuit that was brought against Aereo by a group of broadcasters. Specifically, the judge has dismissed the broadcasters’ unfair competition claim against the start-up, which has been backed by Barry Diller. This leaves two copyright infringement claims that still need to be decided in this case, which was filed against Aereo by a group that includes FOX and Univision. A hearing on this matter is scheduled to begin on May 30. Aereo is on the receiving end of two separate lawsuits from major TV broadcasters that are trying to stop the start-up from streaming television over the web to connected devices. Launched in NY earlier this spring, Aereo charges subscribers $12 per month to use its streaming service.
Google has confirmed that it has closed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility. As part of the purchase, the company has named Dennis Woodside the new CEO of Motorola Mobility, replacing the outgoing Sanjay Jha. Recently, Woodside was the President/Americas for Google and helped increase its revenue in the country from $10.8 billion to $17.5 billion in less than three years, according to CEO Larry Page.

An IBM study of over 1,700 CEOs from 64 countries and 18 industries finds that today only 16% of CEOs are using social business platforms to connect with consumers, but projects that number to jump to 57% within the next three to five years. Social media is poised to become the second-most consumer engagement method for organizations within the next five years, behind only face-to-face interactions. Additionally, 71% of global CEOs regard technology as the number one factor to impact an organization’s future over the next three to five years, which is more so than shifting economic and market conditions. 53% of CEOs are planning to use technology to facilitate greater partnering and collaboration with outside organizations, according to the study.
A case study from mobile ad network Jumptap and hyper-local targeting company PlaceIQ, working with ad agency Hill Holliday, finds that hyper-local targeting is more successful in reaching specific audiences than geo-fencing alone. The companies and the ad agency were tasked by “a leading retailer” to target audiences that fit its demographic profile (in this case, focusing on women between the ages of 35-54, home décor, DIY, women’s lifestyle content, and more) and over-indexed for likelihood to visit its stores. The campaign employed PlaceIQ’s contextual approach to targeting, optimizing the retailer’s hyper-local placements, which they say resulted in continuously improving performance in each targeted segment. For example, in NYC and Chicago:
- Virtual grids of 100-meter x 100-meter tiles were established using PlaceIQ’s proprietary location technology.
- PlaceIQ focused on grids closest to entertainment venues to determine devices that over-indexed for likelihood to enjoy dining out, movie and theater going. These audiences received an “over-weighting” of impressions in the campaign, according to the companies.
- Overall, the retailer saw a 41.21% CTR lift in NY and 51.4% CTR lift in Chicago over non hyper-local targeting.
Four of the top five most valuable global brands are technology companies: Apple (#1), IBM (#2), Google (#3), and Microsoft (#5), according to global research agency Millard Brown‘s 2012 BrandZ Top 100.
Recent data published by Google from its 2012 Our Mobile Planet research finds that 66% of smartphone users perform a mobile search after seeing an offline ad. In fact, 58% look for more information seeing an ad on TV. Google says it’s important for businesses to integrate mobile into cross-media campaign plans, as other data shows that 61% of smartphone users only look at the first page of search results and 89% notice mobile ads, not to mention the 86% of smartphone users who are on their devices while consuming some other form of media.

He will report to the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors, and will also lead a senior management team made up of six direct reports and a total staff of 20 people.
USA TODAY Travel Media Group has appointed John Peters as its new President, and Krista Nordlund as its new VP/Product. Peters will direct the overall strategy of the USA TODAY Travel Media Group, while Nordlund will focus on the development of consumer digital products. Both will be based in USA TODAY’s McLean headquarters.
Spanish Broadcasting System has promoted Richard Lom to VP/SBS Entertainment. In his new role, Lom will oversee all aspects of the daily operations, live concerts, worldwide management, new TV development, marketing and partnerships, worldwide booking, new business development, and Interactive for the SBS Entertainment divison. Based in Miami, Florida, he will report to Albert Rodriguez, COO of SBS.

Mark Campe has joined the company as SVP/West Coast Sales and will head Zoom’s LA office. Both will be heavily involved in driving the expansion of Zoom’s ad-supported video media solutions.

Video conferencing services provider ooVoo has announced a slew of product upgrades, the most prominent of which is a new app for Facebook that allows for 12-way video chatting. An upgrade to ooVoo’s iPad app also includes the 12-way video chat feature, and enables users to view four video streams at once. For users who don’t have an ooVoo app, the service will let them connect with friends by emailing, posting, or texting an ooVoo Call Link. Other enhancements to the service include a new user interface for its iOS and Android apps, as well as a new version of its PC app, and the ability to record and upload video chats to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter, for free. Not forgetting the advertisers, ooVoo is also allowing them to run banner ads on video chat windows (approximately 10 banners ads will be displayed on the video chat window). ooVoo also threw some metrics my way regarding its users:
- Over 46 million users worldwide.
- ooVoo video chats on average last 20 minutes.
- The global user split is 65% US/35% international.
- More than 60% of ooVoo users are under the age of 25.
- 55% of the overall user base is female.
