5/23/07

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 23, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Finales:
FOX: American Idol (2-hour Results Show) at 8p
ABC: Lost at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Stone Phillips will be leaving Dateline NBC and the network next month when his contract is up. Co-Anchor Anne Curry will continue as the single anchor for Dateline.  Phillips has been with Dateline for 15 years when he joined NBC News in 1992.

The History Channel has renewed Digging for the Truth for a fourth season which will begin in third quarter with a two-hour special on pirates of the Mediterranean. The series will also sport two new hosts: former Navy fighter pilot Hunter Ellis and adventurer Zay Harding. Joining these two will be the other series regulars, archaeologist Kara Cooney and military and diving expert Charles Ingram. The series is produced by JWM Productions.

June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season and The Weather Channel has scheduled a week’s worth of specials through June 7. The network will air special editions of Storm Stories and TWC is sending its weather correspondents to hurricane hot zones such as New Orleans and Pensacola Beach for live reports on hurricane-related topics.

Network Evening News Update: ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson has had four straight weeks in the top position among total viewers, households and A25-54. Being first in all three categories hasn’t happened for ABC since November 1996. For the week of May 14, 2007 here is how the evening newscasts ranked:
ABC: 8.05 million Total Viewers & 2.1/10 A25-54
NBC: 7.16 million Total Viewers & 1.7/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.17 million Total Viewers & 1.5/7 A25-54

AmericanLife TV Network has a new Sunday primetime drama block starting June 3 featuring the classic shows St. Elsewhere at 8p, Hill Street Blues at 9p and L.A. Law at 10p. The entire block then airs each Sunday evening again at 11p.

So there you are, wandering thru Times Square in NYC next month, when you happen to notice a 4′ cube suspended 40′ in the air.  Surely, you’ll wonder what it’s all about, and without calling you Shirley, I’ll tell you.  Encased and manacled inside the cube will be magician Criss Angel who will have all of 24 hours to figure his escape from the concrete cube.  At the end of the 24 hours, the cube will come crashing to the ground. All of this is a pr stunt to promote Angel’s show on A&E, Criss Angel Mindfreak, which is scheduled to debut on June 5, one day after the Times Square “show,” assuming, of course, he escapes. You can catch Angel’s cube show at 46th & 8th Avenues, which will also be taped for a future episode of Mindfreak.

Fans of the cancelled CBS post-apocalyptic serial Jericho, who launched a series of campaigns to try and save the show, earned a personal letter from CBS Entertainment chief Nina Tassler on the show’s message boards on cbs.com. She writes that she was touched by the response, which included a flood of emails, an online petition and a MySpace page, and says CBS hopes to let the fans know how the show would have ended. If ever there was an opportunity for a digital extension, this is it!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

All indicators point to AMC picking up a new drama pilot called Breaking Bad from Sony Pictures Television and starring Bryan Cranston.  The story is about a chemistry teacher who after finding out he is terminally ill, uses his chemistry skills to set up a meth lab with the goals of generating enough money that his family will be financial set after he dies.  Other castmates includes Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul, Betsy Brandt and Dean Norris.  No official comment from AMC as yet on this project.

Casting Call:  Sci Fi Channel will kick off a nationwide search for the newest cast member of Ghost Hunters next month, who will appear in an upcoming episode of the show. Wannabes can submit an audition video on SciFi.com from June 6 utilizing interactive tools such as the Ghost Hunter’s Gear Guide. Three finalists will compete during the annual Ghost Hunters Live telecast on Halloween night.
