Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05.22.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Microsoft finally unveiled its follow-up to the Xbox 360 yesterday: The Xbox One, which will launch sometime “later this year.” The device continues the Xbox’s transition from being a gaming console to an all-in-one home entertainment device. With that in mind, updates to the device include a dedicated trending content section that pulls up the videos your friends and the Xbox universe are watching; the ability to Skype while watching videos, movies, and TV shows; and voice/gesture controls via a bundled Kinect, which will allow users to switch between videos, live TV, the web, and games without touching the remote. Oh and also, the Xbox One will feature a live-action Halo TV series, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Netflix will premiere Derek, a new comedy-drama written, directed, and executive-produced by and starring Ricky Gervais, on Thursday, September 12. All seven 30-minute episodes of the show will be available at 12:01 AM PT sharp on that day. Netflix members in all of the service’s territories will have access to the show, except those in the UK, where Derek debuted on Channel 4 and has already been picked up for a second season. The series, which follows a group of friends and co-workers at a retirement home, also stars Karl Pilkington, Kerry Godliman, and David Earl. It was produced for Netflix by Gervais’ Derek Productions.

Yahoo Finance and Yahoo News will live-stream Generation I.O.U., a summit tackling the issue of student loan debt. Moderated by Aaron Task, Editor-in-Chief of Yahoo Finance, the panel discussion will include perspectives from actual students, parents, as well as experts like Yahoo Finance’s Farnoosh Torabi (who hosts Yahoo’s Financially Fit program) and economics professor Robert B. Archibald. The live stream will begin at 12:30pm ET on Thursday, May 23.

CONTENT EVERYWHERE

VUDU, a VOD service owned by Walmart, has updated its VUDU Player iOS app to allow users to download movies they’ve rented or purchased in order to watch them offline. Other app updates include a new-look video player and support for closed-captioning.

Viewster has struck several licensing deals to add 240 hours of new content to its ad-supported streaming service, according to The Wrap. This includes a deal with All3Media to offer BBC show Skins in the US, as well as deals with Starz and Shine Group to offer shows like Head Case and Mayday for the service’s international viewers. Viewster currently offers more than 5,000 film and TV show titles, and is available in 120 countries.

ZUUS is a new music video multichannel network that’s available online, on mobile devices, connected TVs, and even television. ZUUS Media, the company behind the video service, says it has deals in place with “major labels and over 75 independents” to distribute music videos across over 100 digital channels spanning a variety of genres. The company’s content strategy also includes original material such as live concert footage, behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, and artist-hosted shows. In addition, the company plans to roll out artist-curated channels, individual artist pages, “mood channels,” and more. Along with its website and iOS app, ZUUS is also available on linear TV, with four, genre-specific channels currently in public beta, and plans to roll out two additional channels during Q3.

Join us at the Cynopsis Digital BIG Monetization Summit on June 18. Because not attending would be an incredibly foolish thing to do. This is an undisputed fact. We’re just sayin’…

ADVERTISING

Media Storm, a media and marketing agency for entertainment, digital, and retail brands, is offering its clients access to Videology’s TV Amplifier product, which allows planners to supplement their TV ad buys with targeted digital video ad campaigns online as well as for the first time on mobile devices. “It’s critical that we give television planners tools to keep pace with the way consumers are using media,” said Scott Ferber, Chairman and CEO of Videology. “We know that nearly half the viewers who start watching a video on one device finish watching on another. That’s a crazy statistic that makes traditional video planning difficult.” The TV Amplifier product — and the partnership with Media Storm — aims to make it easier for TV planners to extend their campaigns to mobile screens.
In Other Words: The product allows advertisers to access Nielsen’s online audience segments and TV viewing data. Advertisers can create custom segments based on specific TV shows or ads viewed, and then target those segments across devices.

Mobile app solutions provider Burstly is opening up its monetization product, SkyRocket, to all mobile app developers. With SkyRocket, app developers have the ability to cross-promote their new apps and offer in-app purchases. Burstly says the product also provides an on-ramp for developers who want to work with third-party monetization partners. Other products in the portfolio include TestFlight, an iOS and Android app beta-testing platform, and FlightPath, an analytics solution. The three products can be used separately or together to improve user experience.

RESEARCH NEWS

FreeWheel‘s latest quarterly Video Monetization Report highlights two different market segments when it comes premium online video, and the different strategies they use to monetize their video content.
FreeWheel defines the first segment as “Linear + Digital,” which pretty much consists of TV networks that generate most of their revenue from linear but also offer content online. When it comes to online video, Linear + Digital networks’ business models focus on delivering a mix of short-, mid-, and long-form content, with an emphasis on higher ad loads per piece of content. FreeWheel reports that Linear + Digital has built up “healthy ad loads” across all content types, with long-form ad loads increasing from 7.4 ads per video in Q1 2012 to 9.5 in Q1 2013.
The other segment, “Digital Pure-Play,” operate exclusively on IP-based environments and offer original video content as well as aggregated content from third parties. For Digital Pure-Play networks, FreeWheel says their business models are focused on video view growth via syndication of largely short-form content. In fact, FreeWheel says Digital Pure-Play drove almost 85% of its Q1 video views through syndication. Linear + Digital had a syndication rate of 25%. Other findings from the report:

  • Short-form videos accounted for 87% and 86% of total video views across Linear + Digital and Digital Pure-Play networks, respectively (to be fair, there are also a lot more ad-supported short videos online than longer ones).
  • Non-desktop video viewing (smartphones, tablets, OTT devices) increased six-fold, reaching almost 20% of all video views tracked by FreeWheel.
  • Tablets are becoming more like TV, with almost 60% of ad views on tablets in Q1 2013 happening during long-form content (more than 20 minutes).

EXEC MOVES

Shashi Seth has joined The Tribune Company as the President of Tribune Digital Ventures, according to AllThingsD. Based in Silicon Valley, he will report to CEO Peter Liguori. Per the report, he will set up and lead Tribune Digital Ventures, a new digital investment arm for Chicago-based Tribune.

The Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA) has chosen Barry Frey to be its new President and Chief Executive Officer. He succeeds Susan Danaher, who left DPAA to join the Adspace Digital Mall Network.

THE DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Funny Or Die‘s free iPad magazine, The Occasional, is one of the most consistently funny reads I come across every other month. It routinely features a wide mix of content from some of the brightest minds in comedy. The latest issue, #7: “The Tech Issue,” is no different. There’s a fake letter from guest editor Stephen Hawking; a video and photo shoot about “The One Man Affected by Y2K,” starring Matt Walsh; a piece of short-fiction from Simon Rich about a college girl studying abroad on Saturn in the year 3013; and a new episode of Jenny Slate and Gabe Liedman’s web series Bestie x Bestie. Check it out. LAUGH.
