Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, May 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

ABC will make full episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty available on Sprint video-equipped mobile phones beginning with this week’s season finales. The deal also includes Disney Channel‘s Hannah Montana, The Suite Life of Zach & Cody, Cory in the House and Kim Possible. The shows, part of Sprint’s $20 power Vision TV Pack, will be available on demand or via three linear mobile channels streaming continuously throughout the day. Sprint’s business model contrasts with AT&T’s upcoming iPhone system; Apple iPhone users must purchase TV shows they want to watch from the iTunes store then sync their phones with their computers.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

MySpace is planning to launch a “premium” content section of MySpace Video with branded channels from National Geographic, The New York Times, Reuters, The Daily Reel, Expert Village, Flow, IGN Entertainment, Octane TV, Kush TV, Ripe TV, VBS TV and Young Hollywood. No news on how MySpace plans to drive traffic to the offering. A quick check of the MySpace News service launched last month to compete with the likes of Digg reveals few user votes. 
 
HBO will create three abbreviated episodes of Big Love for HBO On Demand. The mini stories, which fill in backstory gaps on the Hendricksons, will debut on demand June 4 (or a week earlier for Comcast subscribers,) then appear as podcasts and on mobile phones to non-HBO subscribers, before finally airing on the linear network June 24.
 
ESPN launched its first free video podcast available on the ESPN PodCenter site and soon to be up on iTunes. The podcast will include content from ESPN.com’s SportsCenter Minute, Pardon The Interruption’s Big Finish and the First Word segment from Around the Horn.
 
TVOne launched a new broadband portal featuring original programming from its linear network. Clips from shows such as Sharp Talk with Al Sharpton and Turn Up the Heat with G. Garvin stream intermittently on the homepage or are available on demand by genre within the video player.
 
MTV Networks signed an exclusive deal with multimedia comic book creators Gain Ltd. to develop new media comics, graphic novels and children’s books for its online and multiplatform properties. Gain, founded by Jeff Shuter and Daniel Viney, are creators of a proprietary software system called “Bomb-xx” that brings linear content to life in a digital format. In other MTV news, Linkin Park will host a party within Virtual MTV today at 8 pm ET/5 pm PT to discuss their third album Minutes to Midnight. 
 
Disney will launch an interactive VOD channel on Time Warner and Cablevision cable systems later this month that will offer viewers free access to reality shows, episodic programming, concerts and special events as with click-through features where users can request brochures and DVDs about Disney travel destinations.
 
TLC.com will premier its first broadband series Makeover Train June 4, part of a new Fashion Guide launching on the site next month. The ten-episode series centers on hair, makeup and fashion experts giving Boston commuters a quick makeover during their morning commute. Clairol Herbal Essences Color is sponsoring.
 
The Vine E! Online announced a new line-up of short form comedy series. Bad Kitty, appearing every Monday, is a mischievous animated cat adopted by celebrity guests including Britney Spears. A Song by Julia (debuting Tuesdays) features musical numbers by Julia Lillis. The Thin Crowd (premiering Wednesdays from May 23) parodies celebrity events. V.I.D.S. (appearing Thursdays from June 14) tackles tough issues through dance.
 
NBC.com is planning to expand interactive features for its returning shows in fall:
30 Rock: Kenneth the Page will lead guided tours of NBC and The Girly Show. Frank will blog.
Deal or No Deal: A web-exclusive series will catch up with past contestants.
Las Vegas: A “making of” Production Video Diary will take users behind the scenes
ER: Deleted scenes and previews will be featured
Law & Order: SVU: User can preview each week’s case and follow the crime unfold online
Friday Night Lights: The cast and crew will bring “sights and sounds” of Odessa, TX.
Medium: fans will help producers pick storylines and contribute to the writing of a webisode.
Biggest Loser: Season three winner Erik will blog, new host Alison Sweeney will vlog.
Days of Our Lives: Astrology.com will offer horoscopes of characters.
Passions: A third installment of webisodes are planned, dubbed Passions Harmony.
 
The Department of Defense began blocking access to YouTube, MySpace and 11 other web 2.0 sites for soldiers deployed around the world, according to a memo sent by General B.B. Bell, commander of U.S. Forces in Korea. The policy was put in place to protect sensitive information and free up network bandwidth. Now soldiers won’t be able to watch those videos they’ve been posting up on YouTube!
 
IFC has dubbed May “Dot Com Month,” adding a variety of online initiatives to the launch of Getting Away With Murder, its first made-for-the-web series. IFC.com will feature “31 Days of Profanity,” highlighting a different movie cuss word each day, as well as exclusive coverage of the Cannes Film Festival later this month hosted by IFC News’ Matt Singer.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

Broadband Enterprises will introduce five new broadband series during its first upfront presentation to advertisers tomorrow at the Nokia Theatre in New York. Anatomy of an Awkward Situation, Fantastic Two, Hollywood Fast Track and Scuba Sun join the renewal of Cube Fabulous, which was watched by 25 million unique users on AOL and other sites last year. Broadband Enterprises will also launch Vindico on Thursday, an ad serving platform designed to compete with DoubleClick and Quantive’s Atlas. It has been serving ads for P&G since the second quarter.
 
Akimbo officially got out of the hardware business, transitioning instead to an IP-based video on demand content service with the launch of a new consumer website. The Akimbo player can be downloaded for free and users pay to rent individual programs or choose to pay monthly fees for entire channels. Akimbo has content deals with A&E, History Channel, MLB, NHL, National Geographic and Here!, among others.

Former Rolling Stone publisher Terry Hummel is supervising the launch of Needled.com today, the first broadband site of RIVR Media Interactive. The site is setting out to become a video-centric community site for the tattoo culture.
 
eBaum’s World, one of the original video entertainment sites on the web, launched five viral video sub-channels on AOL Video, in the categories of idiot, hilarious, sports, cool and extreme.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

MySpace continues to be dogged with accusations that sex offenders are using the service to stalk young adults. A letter sent on behalf of attorney’s general from 8 states asked the company to identify how many offenders have been identified so far, and what has been done to remove them.
 
News and data providers Thompson Corp. and Reuters Group agreed to merge in a deal valued at $17.24 billion. Reuters CEO Tom Glocer will head the newly merged company, assuming regulators approve the deal.
 
Multicast Media Technologies unveiled a new service that simplifies the process of publishing flash video libraries and TV channels online. The new Vidego platform integrates flash media transcoding with third-party ad solutions and provides syndication and streaming media via Akamai‘s Content Delivery Network.
 
Comcast is replacing the Microsoft IPG in Washington State with its in-house I-Guide developed by GuideWorks, a joint venture between Comcast and TV Guide International.
 
DirecTV may test a new broadband delivery system that carries information through the power lines of a major U.S. city.
 
AOL acquired mobile ad firm Third Screen Media, which serves more than 100 mobile web publishers. TSM will operate as wholly owned subsidiary of AOL’s Advertsing.com.
 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~
 

Ford agreed to place 12 months of online ads with behavioral targeting ad network Specific Media, an exceptionally large upfront commitment in the internet space. Ford will target women aged 25-54 in a branding campaign for several new Lincoln Mercury models. Mediaedge:cia will serve as the buying agency.

DriverTV.com debuted as a comprehensive video showroom in which to research cars by brand, category and budget. DriverTV, which launched as VOD channel in 2005, has added digital friendly tools such as PDF-based spec guides, video downloads viewable on iPods & PSPs and even videos viewable in HD. So far Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, Hummer, Porsche, Saab and Suzuki are participating.
 
The Wall Street Journal Online launched the Auto Center, a car research tool featuring video reports, podcasts, reader Q&As and interviews with industry experts. 
 
If watching car videos is too passive for you, Atari unveiled its fourth Test Drive Collection on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Users can pay 350 points to download the Dino 246 GT, Ferrari Challenge Stradale, Cadillac(R) Cien(TM), RUF RK Spyder, Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster and the TVR T440R to test drive, with the option to purchase from relevant in-game dealerships.
 
YouTube is experimenting with “inline” ads, running text-based ads at the bottom of its video player. If the user clicks on the text, an expanded video ad appears layered on top of the player.

Teen girls tend to use social networking sites to build and reinforce online relationships while boys use them to make new friends and flirt, according to a new study by the Pew Internet & American Life project. More than 55% of 12-17 year olds use social networking sites. Ninety-one percent of teen users say they use the sites to communicate with friends they see frequently while 82% say they use them to keep in touch with friends they rarely see.

Jonathan Sackett
was named Chief Digital Officer of Havas’ agency Arnold. He will report to Pam Hamlin, President of Arnold’s head office in Boston. Jonathan most recently served as SVP/Director of Digital for DraftFCB in Chicago.
 
TitanTV Media hired Mark Effron as SVP of TitanTV.com. He will be charged with building a team to interact with viewers and TV station affiliates in real-time and will be responsible for producing live and on demand content for the site.
 


 

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Instant messaging site Meebo.com launched a new series of meebo rooms where users can gather to view media, chat and invite one another to their own pages. CNET, NBC Universal, CNET, Flixster and Veoh have signed on to provide content and advertisers such as Sony, Blockbuster and Eidos are testing rich media ad units on the site. Call it hyper-chatting or IM meets Second Life.
