Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 15, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Aereo launches in Boston today, and plans to launch in the Atlanta area on June 17. The live-TV streaming service, which began its highly controversial (but highly entertaining) odyssey in New York City, has previously said that it plans to expand to 22 markets by the end of the year. The launch in Atlanta will encompass 55 counties across Georgia, Alabama, and North Carolina. The June 17 availability is for those who pre-register for the service, while a full rollout is scheduled for June 24.


Yahoo and ABC News have added a new show to their daily political series, Power Players. The Fine Print, hosted by ABC News Senior Washington Correspondent Jeff Zeleny, will take a weekly look at what’s going on inside the beltway. The program will cover topics ranging from the current immigration debate to the early race for the 2016 Presidential Election. The show will also feature one-on-one interviews with politicians and other big players within the American political landscape, from campaign architects to analysts. The first episode is anchored by a discussion with former US Senator Jim DeMint. The show is available via ABC News/Yahoo News’ Power Players blog. Other shows within the Power Players programming block include George’s Bottom Line (hosted by George Stephanopoulos), Top Line (hosted by ABC News’ Political Director Rick Klein and Yahoo News’ Olivier Knox), and On the Radar with Martha Raddatz.

That’s not all from Yahoo and its TV partners: Yahoo Finance and CNBC have launched their third co-produced web series, Talking Numbers. Hosted by CNBC’s Brian Sullivan, this daily show will aim to provide investors with the “technical and fundamental” data and insights they need to make better investments. The daily show is divided into three segments, featuring discussions between Sullivan and two market professionals. Alongside the daily show, the Talking Numbers page on Yahoo Finance will also offer video tutorials, a Twitter feed dedicated to the “technical vs. fundamental” debate, and a bunch of custom charts and data.

StyleHaul, a fashion/style-centric multichannel network on YouTube, has raised $6 million from European media company RTL Group, reports AllThingsD. This follows a $6.5 million investment led by Bertelsmann Digital Media Investments, and brings the start-up’s funding total to $17 million. StyleHaul CEO Stephanie Horbaczewski tells AllThingsD that the new funds will go toward building an off-YouTube destination for StyleHaul. Other initiatives include an interactive video player that allows users to buy products as they see them on the screen as well as two original web series.

— In other words: StyleHaul’s interest in building an off-YouTube site follows a growing trend among the YouTube multichannel networks. It not only brings in additional revenue streams for these content networks, but it also works toward eliminating the issue of video discovery (much easier for people to find your stuff when there aren’t billions of other videos to choose from/get distracted by). This trend is not restricted to YouTube, as Blip is also developing custom destinations for its web properties.


Telemundo will soon launch its own TV Everywhere service, TelemundoMas, which will offer authenticated subscribers access to more than 300 TV shows in HD. New episodes of Telemundo shows will show up on the service a day after they air. TelemundoMas will be available online and on mobile devices “beginning this summer.”

At its Upfront yesterday, Univision unveiled two new telenovelas, each of which will seek to engage audiences across platforms. La Tempestad (The Storm), starring William Levy and former Miss Universe Ximena Navarrete, will feature parallel television, digital, and social media storylines, driving viewers to multiple places to uncover the entire story. Mentir para Vivir (Lie So You Can Live), starring David Zepeda and Mayrin Villanueva, will offer behind-the-scenes content via UVideos and Univision’s social media channels. “Our new lineup is better and more expansive than ever before and the fact that we are offering every single minute of our programming on our cutting-edge UVideos platform, speaks to the fact that when we say we are making ourselves available to our young audience anywhere they are, at any time they want, we mean it,” said Cesar Conde, President of Univision Networks.

Starz’s TV Everywhere services, Starz Play, Encore Play, and Movieplex Play, are now available for Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD. Earlier this month, Starz added support for Android and Nook devices. Starz currently has deals with AT&T Uverse, Cox, DirecTV, and Verizon FiOS to offer the TV Everywhere services to those who subscribe to Starz as part of their TV package. Starz plans to announce additional distributors later this year.

In instances of national tragedies or major breaking news, viewers flock to various news outlets to get as much information as possible. Which is why it’s not surprising that CNN Digital reports that April was its second-highest month on record in terms of global video starts (162.5 million) — a lot of people were glued to what was happening in Boston last month. In terms of page views, generated 536 million page views during the week of the Boston manhunt, beating out competitors like Yahoo/ABC News (496 million) and (441 million), based on comScore April data. Though if we expand the scope to all of April, CNN Digital generated 2.3 billion page views, second to only Yahoo/ABC News, which amassed 2.9 billion.

Beachfront Media has launched Beachfront.iO, a mobile video ad platform for developers looking to monetize their apps. “Beachfront.iO’s unique video ad mediation platform puts developers in control of their video advertising — pull video advertising from many of your own sources, as well as through Beachfront’s demand sources,” the company said in a blog post about the product launch. The video ad-serving product also works “ultra-fast,” with the ability to optimize at “sub-millisecond response times,” according to Beachfront.

At its Upfront yesterday, ESPN said it recently held its first “internal hackathon devoted to ad innovation,” which resulted in a new video ad execution: GameBreak. This ad product is integrated into ESPN’s GameCast service, which offers real-time play-by-play coverage of games across the major pro and college sports.

Speaking of ESPN: Twitter and ESPN are expanding their existing video partnership to distribute highlights from major sports events like the World Cup and the X Games in the coming year. Last year, Twitter and ESPN struck a deal to distribute college football highlights and recaps on the social network (they will continue that with the coming college football season). ESPN will sell pre-rolls attached to the clips, with marketers using Twitter’s Promoted Tweets offering to distribute the video-infused tweets more widely across the social network. Earlier this week, Twitter and Fox announced a similar deal to distribute clips from Fox programming on the social network. Twitter is also talking with NBCUniversal and CBS about “more ways to collaborate on online video” — and to monetize those videos, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Brightcove’s newly launched Video Cloud Live module is designed for marketers and media companies to deliver, manage, and monetize live video events across PCs, smartphones, tablets, and connected TVs. The multi-bitrate module is available within the Video Cloud Studio, and allows customers to manage the entire lifecycle of a live video event. With Video Cloud Live, publishers can use custom video players to monetize the live stream via pre-rolls, sponsorship bumpers, and watermarks, as well as multiple bitrate renditions to optimize playback across various screen sizes and network conditions. Other features include real-time performance analytics by way of measuring the number of viewers at any given time during the stream and the ability to create VOD assets from the live stream. Video Cloud Live is currently available in beta to Video Cloud Pro and Enterprise customers.


ESPN’s ScoreCenter app will become the all-new SportsCenter app this fall. Most of the current features of the ScoreCenter app will remain, including the latest scores personalized by favorite teams and leagues. The app will also offer a constantly updating feed of breaking news, articles and video clips, as well as tweets from ESPN talent. Scheduled to launch by the start of the fall football season, the SportsCenter app will be available on the iPhone and Android devices, with support for the iPad to follow soon after.


Remember Animal Planet Live? The recently launched 24-hour streaming service with “channels” devoted entirely to different types of animals, including most awesomely puppies and beluga whales? Well now, in advance of Animal Planet’s Monster Week, the streaming service is launching a new channel: the Piranha Cam, giving us a first-hand look at the toothy fish from Acrylic Tank Manufacturing in Las Vegas, the home of Animal Planet’s Tanked. Animal Planet’s Monster Week is devoted to telling stories about “the world’s most legendary and mysterious creatures.” Maybe they will finally answer the age-old question of what Chihuahuas REALLY are because I refuse to believe that they are a type of dog. Also, for you bloodthirsty-types, daily feedings on the Piranha Cam are scheduled for 9pm ET throughout the week. I hope we find out that Piranha 3D was actually an alarmingly accurate portrayal of how these fish-monsters operate.
