Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 9, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
DreamWorks Animation unveils its feature film release slate through 2014, which includes six original movies and three sequels based on its big movies Kung Fu Panda, Madagascar, and How to Train Your Dragon franchises. This is a shift from the studio’s plan, which as of 2009 had been to release three movies every other year. DreamWorks Animation did release three movies in 2010, How to Train Your Dragon (March 26), Shrek Forever After (May 21), and Megamind (November 5). DreamWorks Animation’s new theatrical release schedule currently goes like this:
- 2011: Kung Fu Panda 2 (May 26); Puss In Boots (November 4)
- 2012: Madagascar 3 (June 8); Rise of the Guardians (November 21)
- 2013: The Croods (March 1); Turbo (June 7); Me and My Shadow (November 8)
- 2014: Mr. Peabody & Sherman (March 21); How to Train Your Dragon 2 (June 20)
Odyssey Pictures Corporation enters into a two-picture financing, development, and co-production deal with ReelWorks Studios and GlueWorks Creative Management, the animation unit of ReelWorks. The two movie projects under the deal are GlueWorks’ feature film Hermie & Friends, based on the faith-based kid’s animated DVD series created by author Max Lucado. GlueWorks is based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The other project, not specifically for kids, is ReelWorks’ live-action movie The Ultimate Life, a sequel to The Ultimate Gift (2007), and both based on novels by Jim Stovall. Odyssey holds the worldwide sales rights for both films. Both features have already secured commitments from Fox Home Entertainment for their domestic DVD rights. Odyssey’s President/CEO John Foster will serve as Executive Producer on both titles.
AMG Films, a division of AMG Holdings, enters into a five-year, first look distribution deal with Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group for TV, DVD and digital rights in the US and select foreign territories. The first movie to be released by Warner Home Video (WHV) under the deal is the faith-based 3D animated feature The Lion of Judah. The movie is set to debut on in 1,000 domestic theatres this spring as part of a separate distribution pact with Rocky Mountain Pictures. The Lion of Judah tells the Easter story from the point of view of a group of animals. Produced by Animated Family Films, the animation arm of AMG Holdings, the movie features the voices Scott Eastwood (Invictus, Gran Torino, Pride, Flags of Our Fathers), Michael Madsen (Donnie Brasco, Kill Bill, Vols. 1 & 2, Reservoir Dogs), and Ernest Borgnine. AMG’s movie development/production slate includes:
- An African Tale an animated family adventure movie about jungle and plains animals overcoming the mistrust of the ages to alter their world
- Bethlehem or Bust the animated prequel (released in 2D and 3D)to The Lion of Judah; Perfect Wave a live-action movie based on the true story surfer Ian McCormack who went to Bali in search of “the perfect wave,” where he was stung by a jellyfish and died
- Heart of a Man this live action movie produced by AMG’s Prelude Pictures is a prequel to Amazing Grace and follows the real story of John Newton, an 18the century seaman who was given as a gift to a West African princess
- Our Father a movie penned by the late John Candy and Gene Quintano, the original plan had Candy starring in the movie
Hasbro names media communications company Initiative ( www.initiative.com ) as its media agency of record in the US. Initiative will also serve in a similar role for The Hub TV network, the kid/family TV joint venture between Hasbro and Discovery Communications, with a separate team based the agency’s LA office. Under the terms of the deal, Initiative be responsible for Hasbro’s media planning and buying activities across its broad entertainment offerings and brand portfolio, which includes Hasbro’s toys and games, TV programming and comprehensive licensing program.
In the US, Dish Network launches BabyTV Mandarin as part of its Chinese Basic Pack. The BabyTV Mandarin (channel 642) features all original short-form Mandarin-language learning and entertainment programming aimed at babies/toddlers, including Charlie & The Numbers, Tulli, Oliver Discovers, Pim & Pimba, and First Baby Songs. Earlier this month Dish Network launched BabyTV in Spanish as part of its DishLatino Clasico package (channel 824), and is also available a la carte in English (channel 126).
MarVista Entertainment inks a licensing deal with Lagardere Active for Power Rangers Samurai. Under the deal Lagardere Active acquires the exclusive pay and free TV rights to 40 episodes of SCG Power Rangers‘ new Power Rangers Samurai in France, where the series will air on its kid-targeted TV channels Canal J and Gulli. Power Rangers Samurai will premiere in France this April 2011 on Canal J and on CanalSAT. The program will debut on free digital terrestrial TV, Guilli, later this year. Power Rangers Samurai is produced by Saban Brands and power Rangers Productions. SCG Power Rangers is an affiliate of Saban Brands.
Fox Look, an arm of Fox Networks Groups that focuses on international licensing and production of unscripted programming from Fox (broadcasting and cable) and third party creators, completes format and program sales around the world for kid/family programming as well non-kid centric shows. In the kid/family arena, Hasbro TV Studio‘s family-targeted series Big Family Game Night (BFGN) has been optioned by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV for a local production, which is currently in development with A Paravision. Germany’s Constantin has also optioned the BFGN format, and the completed BFGN episodes (90+ episodes) have been acquired by SolarTV/RPN (Philippines).
Cbeebies‘ (UK) new online game, The Lingo Show ( www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/lingoshow/ ), attracted 238,000 users in its debut week (February 14, 2011), with close to a quarter of all unique users on the Cbeebies’ website visiting the game’s page. In addition to the game, The Lingo Show also features make activities, audio clips and songs, all aimed at preschoolers. This additional content drew 136,000 unique users in the launch week. A CBeebies in-house production, The Lingo Show currently features French, Spanish and Mandarin, and Welsh, with other languages set to roll out later this month.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Publisher Ape Entertainment and Classic Media enter into a deal under which Casper’s Scare School gets its own comic book line. Based on the characters in the CGI-animated Casper’s Scare School, the new Casper’s Scare School comic book series will be published under Ape’s younger reader imprint, KiZoic, and will debut in stores in October 2011.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Majesco Entertainment Company appoints Michael Vesey as CFO. Vesey, who joined Majesco in 2006, has served as interim CFO since August 2010. Prior to this, he had been was SVP/Corporate Controller, and Chief Accounting Officer. He previously served as CFO, Nuvim, a producer of dietary supplement beverages.
Imax Corp. promotes David Keighley to the newly created position of Chief Quality Officer. Keighley will be responsible for continuing to demand that every film Imax touches not only meets the Company’s exceptional criteria, but becomes an enhanced version of the original. A respected industry veteran, Keighley has been involved in the post-production of 265+ Imax films and will continue to serve as President, DKP 70MM Inc., Imax’s post-production image and quality control subsidiary co-founded with his wife/business partner, Patricia, in 1972. Imax acquired DKP 70MM in 1988. Keighley was named EVP, Imax in July 2007 and before that was SVP.
