Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 30, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

4Kids Entertainment‘s North American license deal for the anime property Yu-Gi-Oh! is cut short following an audit conducted Japanese companies behind Yu-Gi-Oh! that has resulted in a lawsuit, per THRTV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems filed a joint lawsuit in NY federal court against 4Kids Entertainment, alleging 4Kids breached their deal and owes them $4+ million for entering into “secret” deals for TV, home video distribution, and royalty issues including improper deductions.  Under the terms of the original licensing deal TV Tokyo Corporation and Nihon Ad Systems are entitled to 50% of gross income, less pre-defined costs.  Attempts by both sides to resolve the issues failed resulting in the suit.  Cynopsis Kids reached out to 4Kids Entertainment, which has not yet issued a comment on the matter.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

While DreamWorks Animation is preparing for release of a third Madagascar movie in summer 2012, it is also developing a solo movie for the franchises famed Penguins, per THR.  DreamWorks Animation is looking to writers Alan J. Schoolcraft and Brent Simons (the duo behind Megamind) to pen the screenplay for the Penguin picture.  The Penguins already star in DreamWorks Animation’s CGI-animated series The Penguins of Madagascar, which airs on Nickelodeon.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CCI Entertainment signs on to oversee worldwide distribution and merchandising for the new animated preschool series Joe and Jack (39×7).  Produced by Ireland’s Dancing Girl Productions, the newly greenlit first season of Joe and Jack has been acquired been acquired by RTE (Ireland).  A comedy, the series revolves around the adventures of a boy named Joe, and his best buddy a cat named Jack, who together use their imaginations to make dreams come true.  The series is set to ready to deliver in summer 2012.  CCI will debut the series for the international marketplace at MIPTV next week.

Cake has been appointed as the worldwide distributor for the animated preschool series Tom & The Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey (52×5).  Created by director Andreas Hykade (Love & Theft, The Bunjies, Ring of Fire, The Runt), Tom & The Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey is set in a magical world where the everyday and the extraordinary stand side-by-side, as Tom sets out on his search for bread with strawberry jam and honey.  On his quest, Tom runs into new characters, situations and adventures along the way.  The series is a Studio Film Bilder, SWR, BR and WDR co-production.  Tom & The Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey has aired on KI.KA (Germany) since 2005.  Cake will showcase the short-form series at MIPTV, where it will also feature series including The Sparticle Mystery, Eliot Kid 2, Poppy Cat and Oscar’s Oasis.

Zodiak Kids inks a deal with ABC TV Australia for 50+ hours of kid’s programming.  Under the agreement ABC TV Australia acquires four of Zodiak Kids’ TV series including Mister Maker Comes to Town (25×20), Summer In Transylvania season 1 (20×30), Dani’s House season 4 (13×30) and 5 (13×30′) and series 3 of Little Princess (35×11).  ABC TV Australia has also renewed its license for Little Princess season 1 (30×11) and 2 (35×11), as well as the two series specials (2×22).  Mister Maker Comes to Town, Summer In Transylvania and Dani’s House are all produced by The Foundation, which is part of Zodiak Kids. The preschool series Little Princess is produced by The Illuminated Film Company’s studio.  Zodiak Kids is the kid’s production and distribution arm of Zodiak Media Group.

MARKETING/LICENSING

505 Games releases the new videogame Johnny Test for Nintendo DS in North America.  Based on Cookie Jar Entertainment’ animated series, Johnny Test, which is currently in its fifth season and airs on Cartoon Network, the videogame features 12 levels, all the characters from the series.  The game also allows players to play as Johnny or his alter egos, Johnny X or Trooper J, as well as letting them change Johnny’s mood and ego.  The Johnny Test game will release in Europe in September 2011.

Chugg Entertainment, Entertainment Store Group, Lunatic Entertainment and S2BN Entertainment announce that the Yo Gabba Gabba! live stage show will return to Australia this June 2011.  The tour begins in Sydney as part of the Vivid Live festival.  Yo Gabba Gabba! is created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz and produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rachele Geraci is upped to Licensing and Agent Manager, Atlantyca Entertainment.  Based in Atlantyca’s Milan offices, Geraci will continue to play a key role in overseeing the development and implementation of the merchandising programs for all of the company’s brands, which include Geronimo Stilton and Tea Sisters.  She will focus her efforts on categories including soft lines, accessories, back-to-school, bags, costumes, food and consumables, party goods, stationery, among others.  Geraci will report to Claudia Mazzucco, CEO, Atlantyca Entertainment.
