Facebook has updated its Comments Box plug in adding new moderation tools designed to further distribution and improve the quality of discourse on third party sites. Administrators can now limit or prioritize comments posted by a website visitor’s friends or friends of friends and establish a blacklist of unauthorized words or users. And users who leave comments are now being identified under their real name to try and eliminate cowardly troll posts. The Weather Channel and Discovery Communications have already launched the updated Comments plug in across video clip pages for their brands.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
TV network-owned Hulu is on pace to double its ad and subscription revenue from $263 million last year to over $500 million in 2011, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar told audiences at IAB’s annual meeting in La Quinta, CA, per Mediaweek. He also noted that ad revenue distribution was “out of whack” in the U.S. when looking at the time consumers spend on the internet (28% of media consumption time) vs. the share of the ad spend it receives (13%.) Hulu is now supported by 627 advertisers and 250 content partners.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Facebook
also acquired group text-messaging start-up Beluga for an undisclosed amount. The iPhone and Android app, which just passed the “1 million messages sent” milestone, allows users to send text messages to multiple friends at the same time.
 
Media center software company Boxee has secured an additional $16.5 million in funding from new investors Pitango and Softbank with participation from prior investors General Catalyst, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures. CEO Avner Ronen says the new funding will go into product enhancement, additional content deals and more device integrations.
 
Twitter advertising service MyLikes this week announced it had raised $5.55 million in Series A funding led by Khosla Ventures. The company also named Gmail and FriendFeed founder Paul Buchheit to its board and released new mobile apps and widgets.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Recognizing the need for standards in one of the fasted growing ad platform on earth, the Mobile Marketing Association and the IAB have teamed up to establish concrete definitions and guidelines to govern the buying and selling ads on mobile. At the top of the list is how to authentically count impressions on the mobile web. The groups encourage U.S. mobile web ad servers to have their impression counts audited by an independent third party to improve the level of trust and transparency.
 
The IAB also unveiled the 6 winners of its Rising Stars contest – new ad formats chosen from entrants AOL, Unicast, Google, Pictela, Genex and Microsoft for their ability to make an impact in the marketplace. The formats will undergo a 90-day build-out period before being made available at scale to advertisers. Criteria for submissions included branding, user experience, functionality and ease of adoption.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Clear Channel has acquired cloud-based music service Thumplay in a bid to improve its own digital radio platform iHeartRadio, which offers commercial free feeds of the giant’s 750 stations for a subscription fee of $10/month. Thumbplay, which offers its own subscription-based music service, managed to attract only 20,000 subscribers during its first year of operation.
 
Video platform Ooyala is redoubling its efforts to support Apple’s iOS devices, launching a new publishing and real-time analytics suite that supports live and on-demand H.264 and HTML5-encoded video streaming to the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
 
Sorenson Media has introduced a new hybrid video encoding solution that combines on the premises servers with a cloud-based model to handle additional capacity.
 
Google announced that it solved its Gmail data issue and that users’ access has now been fully restored. Thankfully, Google is a veritable packrat when it comes to holding onto data, maintaining multiple copies in multiple data centers in case of such problems.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Video search engine MeFeedia reports rapid acceptance of the upstart HTML5 video standard preferred by Apple’s iOS products, finding that 63% of the 30 million video in its index are now HTML5 compatible.
 
PBS released the results of a national bipartisan survey conducted by Hart Research and American Viewpoint that indicated broad opposition of eliminating funding for public broadcasting. Despite deficit concerns, some 83% of Democrats, 69% of Independents and 56% of Republicans were against cutting funding.
 

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

 
That was quick. Verizon is already moving towards eliminating its $30 all-you-can-eat data plan for the iPhone and could remove the option as early as this summer, per Reuters. The company is mulling a usage-based data pricing scheme instead. AT&T also did away with unlimited iPhone data plans last year, but grandfathered in users with active unlimited accounts.
 
AT&T announced it will begin selling Amazon‘s 3G-enabled Kindle at AT&T retail stores nationwide for its standard price of $189.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
Tremor Media has tapped former Mobile Commons CEO Anthony Risicato to oversee a new video ad buying platform the company is launching, under the title GM, Video Platforms. The marketing platform will provide insights and real-time analytics around video campaigns. Anthony will also work on increasing penetration for Tremor’s existing solutions, including the recently acquired Transpera mobile video ad platform.
 
New York-based lifestyle publisher Complex Media Network hired Scott Cherkin as EVP/Product and Business Development. Scott previously served as SVP/Product and Biz Dev for the Travel Ad Network.
 
YuMe has hired a half a dozen new executives to oversee mobile video advertising hailing from mobile video advertising network Transpera (again, recently acquired by Tremor Media.) The new hires include Former Chief Product Officer and founder, Frank Barbieri, as SVP/Emerging Platforms; Anshu Dua, VP/Business Development Mobile; Tripp Boyle, Senior Director Mobile Sales and Sachin Gupta, Principal Engineer.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
Microblogging site Twitter really underscored its importance in the TV space on Sunday. Despite having a much smaller audience, the Oscars attracted nearly as many tweets (36.4 million) as the 5-hour Superbowl telecast earlier in the month (38.5 million), according to a Twitter blog post. (It helped that co-host James Franco tweeted the opening moments of the show from his smartphone using the WhoSay messaging service – you can’t buy that kind of publicity). It turns out that one hand washes the other. When the #oscars hashtag appeared on air during the Oscar telecast, Twitter activity surged to its highest volume of the night. (It actually appeared twice).
