Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/28/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 28, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.

Apps for HBO Go, Xfinity and MLB.TV have officially launched for the Xbox LIVE, all of which feature voice – and gesture-based controls via Kinect. As is the case with its other digital offerings, the HBO Go app brings the pay-TV channel’s library of current and past television content, as well as a “wide selection” of feature films, to Microsoft’s gaming console. The Xfinity app includes Comcast’s on-demand library and the MLB.TV provides access to all available spring training games and every out-of-market regular season game. The MLB.TV Xbox offering also includes the ability to port their accounts across other mobile devices and connected platforms; comes with the MLB.com At Bat 12 mobile app for free; and offers a variety of in-app features, not the least of which is the ability to watch two games at once via a split-screen. An Xbox LIVE Gold membership, as well as existing subscriptions to HBO, Comcast and/or MLB.TV, is required to access the apps. The additions of these services boost the Xbox’s transition into a home entertainment service. In fact, it may already be there. According to what Yusuf Mehdi, CMO/Interactive Entertainment Division, Microsoft, tells the Los Angeles Times, households spend an average of 84 hours a month on Xbox Live, over half of which is devoted watching videos and listening to music, not playing video games.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

The Huffington Post co-founder Ken Lerer wants to build a digital video news website intended for those who watch Jon Stewart and like-minded programming (not CNN or Fox News), reports AllThingsD. Although a name hasn’t been determined yet, the site will reportedly launch sometime this summer and will feature a combination of live-video content and taped reports, and a mix of professionally produced programming and amateur content. This new digital video news operation will not be confined to its website, as it will look to tap the reach of social networks for distribution. AllThingsD says the site/service has started hiring production and back-end staff, but not potential on-air talent just yet.

The National Geographic Channel (NGC) is previewing the first episode of the new 10-part series Wicked Tuna, in its entirety, across multiple platforms, including Facebook, iTunes, DISH Network, natgeotv.com and video-on-demand. The episode is already available on these platforms, and will be until the series premieres on TV this Sunday, April 1, at 10pm ET. The series gives viewers access to the competitive fishing industry in Gloucester, Mass., as it follows the captains and shipmates of several fleets who are trying to capture bluefin tunas. This also marks the largest multiplatform “pre-premiere” in NGC’s history. To coincide with the series, NGC has also launched a dedicated website for the series that features information on the history and importance of the bluefin tuna.

Google is close to launching a new commenting system that could rival the one from Facebook, according to a report from The Next Web. The system will integrate with the Google+ platform, as well as the company’s other web services, including search, in which it will be capable of indexing comments. As a way to potentially rival Facebook’s commenting platform, Google’s new system would also be available for use on third-party sites.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

In advance of its upcoming IPO, Millennial Media has raised the price range for each share to $11-$13 per share, up from $9-$11. The mobile ad network is looking to raise up to $152.5 million, up from the original $75 million Millennial had intended to raise, and which would value the company as high as $973.5 million, reports TechCrunch. Millennial delivers ads to over 30,000 apps, reaching 200 million unique users across the world. Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and Barclays Capital are the lead underwriters for the offering.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

comScore has released the fully study results from its U.S.-based vCE Charter Study involving online ad campaigns for 12 premium national advertisers. It found that in many cases, a large portion of online ad impressions are not delivering according to plan, and that the quality of the ad itself can vary based on a variety of factors, including site, placement, creative and targeting strategy. Key findings from the study include:

  • 31% of ads were not in-view (never had the opportunity to be seen), and in-view rates ranged from 7% to 100% across the sites where the campaign ran.
  • Campaigns with basic demographic targeting objectives (such as a broad age range) performed well. However, when additional demographics were introduced, the accuracy rates of the ad delivery declined.
  • 37% of all impressions were delivered to audiences with behavioral profiles that were relevant to the brand.
  • Of the campaigns analyzed, comScore says that 72% had at least some impressions that were delivered adjacent to objectionable content. While it wasn’t a large number of impressions on “an absolute basis,” nonetheless, 92,000 people were exposed to these objectionable ads.
  • Ad placements with high in-view rates are not getting higher CPMs than placements with low in-view rates. Similarly, ads that reach the primary demographic target are not generating more value than those that are not.

A new partnership between V12 Group and eXelate will integrate V12 Group’s offline consumer audience data with eXelate’s online data in order to help clients improve online ad campaign performance. Advertisers will be able to use V12 Group’s proprietary data-set, PYCO, which is a targeted personality profiling data-set based on the Meyers Briggs 16 distinct personality types. V12 says PYCO has helped V12 provide clients with double-digit increases in campaign performance. eXelate will help V12 further distribute its data across media channels, including networks, exchanges, video platforms, DSPs and more. Advertisers can select from over 1000 privacy-compliant segments of eXelate data, as well as over 300 from V12 Group, to create targeted branding campaigns, and niche-focused direct response campaigns, which can be integrated with any of the nine distinct V12 Group audience categories, including, but not limited to Demographic, Sports and Fitness, Lifestyle and Travel.

~ TECH DEALS, MERGERS & SKIRMISHES ~

Hot off the heels of its successful Angry Birds Space release, which surpassed 10 million downloads in only three days, the game’s developer, Rovio Entertainment, has purchased Futuremark Games Studio, the (now former) gaming arm of benchmarking software developer Futuremark. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. It is Rovio’s second acquisition in the past year.

Digital video solutions company Imagine Communications’ ICE Video Platform IPTV transcoder has been qualified for both the 1.0 and 2.0 versions of the Microsoft Mediaroom Internet Protocol TV platform. The test was administered as part of the Microsoft Mediaroom IQ Lab program, which is intended to enable seamless interoperability and compliance of headend equipment used in Microsoft Mediaroom 2.0 deployments. The ICE Video Platform is an all-in-one multiscreen transcoding and multiformat media streaming solution that is designed for service providers who want to deploy more channels with higher picture quality, and then rapidly add support for multiple devices such as tablets, PCs and smartphones. It currently serves thousands of live-streams to over 20 million North American households.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Real-time bidding (RTB) in online video advertising will account for 21.8% of all online video spending by 2013, according to a new report from Forrester Research, commissioned by SpotXchange. Forrester found that U.S. online video RTB spending stood at $190 million in 2011. For 2013, it projects that number to increase 251% to $667 million. Forrester cites the success of RTB in online display advertising as being one of the driving agents in the growth of RTB in online video advertising. Buyers who have experienced RTB in online display have been among the earliest adopters of RTB for online video, as they’re familiar with the technology and audience-based buying, finds the report. Michael Shehan, President and CEO, SpotXchange, said that the company has been witnessing similar percentage growth in its RTB marketplace.

CMOs estimate their marketing budgets will grow 8.1% in the coming year, according to a February 2012 poll from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, per eMarketer. Respondents project their online ad spending to increase 12.8% in the coming 12 months. It may come at the expense of traditional media advertising, with respondents believing their budgets for traditional media marketing would fall 0.8% over the same timeframe. Additionally, social media will receive major focus: the respondents indicated that they plan to earmark 7.4% of their overall budgets to social media, and also said that they see that percentage jumping up to 19.5% by 2017. However, social media is still viewed as a channel that exists outside companies’ overall marketing strategies, according to the survey respondents. 18% said social media had not yet been added to their overall marketing plans, and 7% believed social media had been effectively integrated into their overall marketing strategy.

~ EXEC MOVES ~

Global mobile video marketing company Mogreet has expanded its marketing and sales team with the appointment of Serena Ehrlich to be its new Director/Marketing and Anthony Ward to Director/Sales. Both will assist in continuing Mogreet’s growth in the mobile marketing sector and in the mobile social sharing ecosystem. Ehrlich will lead the company’s marketing efforts, which includes the expansion of the moShare mobile social sharing service. Ward will oversee Mogreet’s growing retail business, which currently includes Charlotte Russe, Bloomingdales, Gymboree, Steve Madden and other brands.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The e-bookstore on Pottermore has officially launched, and is offering all seven Harry Potter books in e-book and digital audiobook formats, across pretty much every device and platform. The first three books in the series cost $7.99 each as e-books and $29.99 as digital audiobooks. The last four books are priced at $9.99 each as e-books and $44.99 each as digital audiobooks. The titles are currently available only in U.S. and U.K. English, but French, Italian, German and Spanish versions are to follow. Interestingly, Pottermore has struck deals with several major retailers, including Sony, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Google, but not Apple, through which the retailers can sell the digital books via links on their respective digital storefronts. These links would enable users to directly download the digital book to their device. In exchange for hosting these links, the retailers would get a cut of the sales.
