Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 27, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Turner Sports reports that March Madness Live, the TV Everywhere app that lets users watch live games across devices, generated 36.6 million live video streams and 10 million hours of live video consumption across all screens during the first week of the tournament. For comparisons’ sake, the 2012 tournament generated 18.3 million live streams in total.
Oh, there’s more: March Madness enticed 4.2 million unique visitors to watch live video across its broadband offerings, an increase of 161% versus 2012. On mobile, 2.6 million unique visitors watched live video, up 121% versus 2012. Over the opening week, broadband users watched an average of 105 minutes of live video (up 12%), and mobile users watched an average of 61 minutes of live video (up 42%).
Consumption increased during the weekend, with mobile accounting for 43% of live streams on Thursday, 48% on Friday, 59% on Saturday, and 60% on Sunday. Additionally, mobile accounted for 23% of live-viewing minutes on Thursday, 25% on Friday, 30% on Saturday, and 32% on Sunday.

NBCUniversal has announced a “Digital.Amplified” event on April 24, 2013, to focus on how mobile, social, second screen, and original digital video is activated across the company, as well as highlight the role each plays in the company’s on-air and online offerings for marketers and consumers. The event, which sounds a lot like the NewFront event NBCU hosted last year, will be held a week prior to this year’s NewFront extravaganza. It will take place at the Skylight Modern in NYC.

Revision3 is now available on the Xbox 360. Available to all Xbox Live Gold members in the US, Canada, and Australia, the new app offers access to the entire Revision3 video library, including its slate of original web series. The app is also compatible with Kinect’s voice and gesture-based control system.

BlackBerry has inked deals with PBS, Univision, and Viacom to offer TV shows from each company via the BlackBerry World store. The BlackBerry World app is pre-loaded on all smartphones powered by BlackBerry 10. Per the deals, Univision’s UVideos app will be available for BlackBerry Z10 devices. Users will also be able to purchase individual episodes of Univision TV series and telenovelas, as well as episodes of shows from Viacom’s TV networks and PBS.

— In other words: One of the things necessary for BlackBerry to reclaim some of its lost stature in the smartphone market is to offer content comparable to what’s available on the App Store and Google Play. While this definitely helps that, BB10 is still missing some big fish, including Netflix and Hulu Plus.

Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry YouTube channel has renewed two existing series and unveiled three new ones. All five series will begin to roll out on the channel beginning April 1, which also serves as the one-year anniversary for the YouTube channel. In that time, Geek & Sundry has accumulated (very) close to 500,000 subscribers and over 44 million views. Here are the five shows:

  • Felicia’s Ark (new, every Monday): Viewers help Day decide which animals from their favorite video games she will save before “a digital apocalypse.”
  • Space Janitors (Season 2, every other Tuesday): Sci-fi comedy about two custodians who work at an evil space station that’s in the midst of an intergalactic war.
  • Fetch Quest (new, every Wednesday): From Emmy-nominated Jordan Allen Dutton (Robot Chicken), the animated comedy series will be about video game culture.
  • TableTop (Season 2, every other Thursday): A Celebrity Poker-style show in which you watch Wil Wheaton and his friends play board games.
  • The Player Ones (new, every Friday): A sketch series focusing on video game tropes and humor.

CBS has acquired a 50% stake in TV Guide, which operates TVGN and Per the deal, CBS will purchase the ownership interested currently held by One Equity Partners (OEP), the private investment arm of JPMorgan Chase.

Local Corporation has launched Fusion by Local, a new ad network designed to help marketers target and reach local audiences in the US. The ad network offers advertisers access to over 1,000 regional media sites, as well as a variety of standard and custom display, rich media, and mobile ad units.

UK-based Videoplaza has launched Karbon 2, its new ad management platform for publishers to sell audience segments that can be targeted across devices. The company is also unveiling the Karbon Data Alliance, which consists of a global network of big data partners that will help publishers analyze regional audience data and create audience segments. In addition to those two, Videoplaza has also unveiled Karbon Audience Management, a “cookieless” cross-device targeting solution, and Karbon Insight, a real-time reporting tool.

Worldwide shipments of smart connected devices grew 29.1% year-over-year to top 1 billion in 2012, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). Tablets were credited with being the main drivers of this growth, as tablet shipments increased 78.4% year-over-year to surpass 128 million in 2012. When looking at the top device vendors in 2012, IDC says Apple closed the gap on market leader Samsung in the fourth quarter. During Q4, Apple accounted for 20.3% shipment share of connected devices, versus 21.2% for Samsung. On the revenue front, Apple was way better, capturing 30.7% of worldwide revenues, versus 20.4% for Samsung. Looking into the future, IDC projects the worldwide smart connected device market to continue to grow, exceeding 2.2 billion shipments and revenues of $814.3 million in 2017.

Ad spending in the use grew 4% during the first two months of this year, compared to the same time period in 2012, according to new data from Standard Media Index (SMI), per MediaPost. The SMI captures actual spending data from four major holding companies, Aegis, Havas, Interpublic, and Publicis. On the digital side, the SMI shows that digital accounted for 21.7% of media buys (across video, display, social, mobile, email, and more) during the first two months of 2013.

The iPhone is finally coming to T-Mobile, and will be in stores beginning April 12. Customers can start pre-ordering for the iPhone 5 now. Though, because T-Mobile is electing to go with a “no contracts” strategy, all iPhone 5 pre-orders require a $99.99 down payment, after which customers will pay $20/month for the next 24 months. Since T-Mobile is rolling out its own LTE network this year, the iPhone 5, as well as other LTE-capable devices like the Samsung Galaxy S4, will be able to tap into that. For those in NY, T-Mobile’s LTE network is coming by early summer.

Viggle, the app that lets users earn rewards for checking into their favorite TV programs, is launching a new competition for developers to create TV companion apps for its second-screen platform. Developers will compete “for total cash and prizes worth” $50,000 as well as to have their products integrated into the Viggle platform. The categories are as follows: Best Overall App; Best Synchronized App; Best Social TV App, and Popular Choice. The competition begins April 15.

Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products today launches a new e-commerce hub at The site links to individual shops based on Fox TV series, beginning with New Girl, Glee, American Dad, and Family Guy. Fans can purchase clothing and jewelry similar to what’s worn on their favorite shows and also see show clips and access each show’s social channels. I like this site because it feels like more than just a merchandising moment; the content is well and carefully integrated with the show-themed products.
