Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/23/11
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Sprint Nextel CEO Dan Hesse, who doubles as Chairman of CTIA-The Wireless Association, didn’t mention AT&T’s proposed acquisition of T-Mobile in his opening keynote address at CTIA’s annual confab. But he did take several swipes at the deal in a roundtable discussion later in the day, claiming it would stifle innovation and consolidate too much power into the hands of AT&T and Verizon. (As AT&T and T-Mobile merge, about 4 in 5 U.S. cellular subscribers will be either AT&T/T-Mobile or Verizon Wireless customers.) He also announced that all U.S. cell phones will have a common micro-USB interface by next year that will allow universal external power chargers to power all new phones. Sprint’s stock price began to recover from its drubbing after Hesse unveiled two new Sprint devices: an Android-based EVO smartphone that will feature glasses-free 3D video and a HTC EVO View 4G smartphone, complete with a 7-inch screen and a digital stylus for jotting down notes. Both gadgets are due out this summer.
Syfy announced it is entering the social gaming space, initially developing sponsor-driven Facebook games later this year under its own Syfy Games banner. Syfy will serve as the exclusive publisher of these new games in all markets and will work with an independent game developer to bring their concepts to fruition. Game genres will include sci-fi, fantasy, paranormal, action/adventure, and superhero genres, and include games based on both original content and Syfy programming.
CTIA unveiled a new App Rating initiative slated to be ready by year-end that calls for self certification and ratings of mobile apps based on their appropriateness for children. CTIA is also issuing a request for proposal (RFP) to build and maintain an online questionnaire and database system for the purpose of rating app content.
In a bid to recruit monthly subscribers and better serve occasional readers, the Wall Street Journal will begin selling single-issue digital versions of the paper today through iTunes for $1.99/issue, reports paidcontent. The WSJ also recently began bundling its full suite of digital products – the iPad and Android Tablet Editions and iPhone and BlackBerry apps – for $3.99/week.
ESPN acquired multiplatform rights for Champions League Twenty20 and International Cricket Council (ICC) events, including the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, through 2015. More than 1,000 additional hours of live cricket will also be featured on broadband network ESPN3.
PBS is offering up the first episode of Ken Burns’ classic documentary series “The Civil War” on its free iPad app and iPhone/iPod Touch app on March 24, ten days before the series begins its rebroadcast on PBS on April 4. The first episode will also be streamed on pbs.org for one week beginning on Monday, April 4. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.
Gannett’s interactive ad company PointRoll is expanding its two partner programs, Open Insights and PointRoll Included, designed to increase ad effectiveness through better measurement and easier adoption of interactive ad formats. Open Insights, developed to ease the integration of third-party data, targeting and analytics into campaigns, will add 8 new partners including AdXpose, DataXu, TubeMogul and Vizu. The PointRoll Included program, which offers access to PointRoll’s rich media formats at no extra charge, will add TheStreet and 24/7 Real Media to its 130-member partner program. Meanwhile BrightRoll and TubeMogul have become inaugural partners of its In-Stream Video Included Program, along with JumpTap and WHERE joining a mobile component of the program.
The board of the Audit Bureau of Circulations agreed to modify the requirements for qualifying U.S. and Canadian consumer magazines as replica digital editions. While editorial content and photography must continue to be the same in both print and electronic versions, advertising may now differ. In addition, publishers are no longer required to secure an opt-out confirmation from advertisers that are unable to submit reformatted digital files in time or simply do not want their print ads to appear in digital editions.
Federal Judge Denny Chin rejected the Google Books settlement, claiming it gave the company a “defacto monopoly over unclaimed works” and rewarded it for wholesale copying of copyrighted works without permission. Google forged the $125 million deal with the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers in 2008 to give them the right to publish works online that were out of print but still under copyright.
Apple is suing Amazon over its use of the moniker “App Store” to describe its online outlet for Android applications. The Amazon Appstore (Amazon spells it as one word) allows users to test apps on a simulated Android handset before they buy and gives away one free paid app each day. Apple registered the term with the U.S Patent and Trademark office on July 17, 2008.
More than 137K have signed a change.org petition to compel Apple to remove a free Exodus International app from the App Store that offers counseling and “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ,” reports ABC News.
Americans flooded Auto Manufacturer sites in February following several high-profile car commercials that aired during this year’s Super Bowl, according to ComScore. More than 25 million people visited the category during the month (up 11% vs. January), with General Motors taking the top spot with 5.0 million visitors. Tax sites attracted 33.1 million visitors in Feb., an increase of 24% month-to-month, making it the top gaining category. Google Ad Network led the February Ad Focus ranking with a reach of 92.3% of Americans online, followed by AOL Advertising (84.6% reach), Yahoo! Sites (84.6%) and Yahoo! Network Plus (84.1%).
Research in Motion will begin selling its professional-themed 7” screen PlayBook tablet computer in the U.S. and Canada on April 19. The 16GB Wi-Fi version will sell for $499, the 32GB for $599 and the 64GB for $699.
Emerging network Reelzchannel TV, which paid dearly to acquire the rights to air the controversial miniseries “The Kennedys” premiering April 3, has launched a supporting iPad app designed to synch live during the broadcast of each of the series’ 8 episodes. Users can access a timeline containing historical links, photos and video clips or chime in via Twitter or Facebook during the show.
Hallmark Channel launched a new Facebook game to drum up interest in its reruns of Frasier, premiering on the network on April 4. Click on Frasier’s large forehead to access memories, video clips and found objects “Inside the Mind of Dr. Frasier Crane.”
CNBC announced it is launching its Real-Time Business-themed app on tablets running on Android’s Honeycomb operating system, beginning with a release for Motorola’s Xoom tablet in April. The app features real-time stock quotes for both the New York Stock Exchange and the NASDAQ marketplace.
As part of the reshuffle of jobs following its merger with Comcast, a trio of NBCUniversal executives were promoted: Cameron Blanchard to EVP/Communications; Tony Cardinale to EVP/Brand Planning & Strategic Insights; and Margaret Lazo to EVP/Human Resources of the newly created NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media Division. Margaret will relocate from LA to New York City and each will report to the division’s Chairman Lauren Zalaznick.
Chris Harris, former Director of Engineering of the Video Platform Team for Yahoo, has joined Boston-based online measurement firm Visible Measures as VP/Engineering.
Cinram International Inc. has appointed former Warner Bros. EVP of Global Operations John Crosier to head its digital team in the newly created position of SVP/Architecture and Delivery. John will be based in Los Angeles and report to CEO Steve Brown.
New York-based ABI Research hired former In-Stat researcher Meaghan Roache as Primary Research Analyst.
Audit Bureau of Circulations elected four new directors to its North American board: Steve Mueller, COO, NSA Media, was tapped to represent U.S. advertising agencies; Steve Sachs, EVP/ Consumer Marketing and Sales, Time Inc., will represent U.S. consumer magazines; Terry Snow, CEO, Bonnier Corp., will oversee U.S. consumer magazines; and Alex Tamayo, SVP/Media Strategy, PHD, will represent U.S. advertising agencies.
MSNBC’s hyperlocal digital news service EveryBlock has relaunched with a fresh uncluttered look and a bevy of new social networking-inspired features designed to connect people who post information on the site with their neighbors. Instead of operating a one way block-by-block newsfeed, EveryBlock now enables users to comment on postings: a big box now appears above each posting allowing you to thank the user for the info or start a discussion on the news. (A neighborhood honors system rewards users for contributions they make and “thanks” they receive.) Facebook and Twitter posts are now integrated within the site as well, but the effect remains hyperlocal. You can also now “follow” multiple places besides your own neighborhood; you will receive email alerts from these locales when there’s breaking news to share. The new EveryBlock is now available in Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
