Good morning. It’s Wednsday, March 14, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Walmart has announced a new in-store “Disc-to-Digital” program that will allow customers to bring a DVD to a Walmart store in order to create a digital copy of that disc. The digital copy would then be loaded on to their account on VUDU, an online video service owned by Walmart. If customers don’t have a free VUDU account, a store rep will help them create one. The price for each conversion will be $2 ($5 if customers want to convert a standard definition disc into an HD digital copy). The program will start on April 16 in over 3,500 Walmart locations. As part of the new offering, Walmart has partnered with Twentieth Century Fox, Universal, Sony Pictures, Paramount and Warner Bros., making each studio’s library of movies available for conversion. Disc-to-Digital will also support the UltraViolet digital locker initiative backed by Hollywood, meaning customers will be able to purchase and watch UltraViolet-enabled titles through VUDU, which Walmart says is currently available on more than 300 internet-connected devices.
Intel is considering its own online pay-TV service for U.S. consumers. According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, the chipmaker has been in talks with media companies about such a “virtual cable operator” that would offer bundled TV channel packages akin to those that are sold by satellite and cable companies. Intel is developing a set-top box through which this potential service would be delivered to consumers. Reportedly, the company would like to launch the service by the end of this year, and has gone as far as to request “rate cards” from several media companies for particular channels or types of on-demand programs.
Crackle, Sony Pictures Television’s multiplatform video streaming service, has launched in Brazil. The company will offer free, ad-supported access to its selection of full-length movies and television series to all consumers in the country. Titles are available in English, with either dubbed or subtitled options in Portuguese also available. Kimberly Clark, Correios and Oi are among the first advertisers on the digital network in Brazil. In the U.S., Crackle is attracting more than 11 million monthly unique visitors across its online, mobile and other connected devices, and has witnessed more than nine million mobile app downloads since its launch in April 2011. The streaming service is also available in the U.K., Canada and Australia.
CBS Interactive Music Group‘s concert webcast series, Live on Letterman, which just recently crossed the 100 million views threshold, will air a live webcast of indie band The Shins’ concert at Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City on Tuesday, March 20 at 9pm ET. The concert is timed with the release of the band’s latest album, and can be viewed live or on-demand via the series’ website. The concert will also be available live or on-demand through other CBS properties, VEVO, most of VEVO’s mobile apps and, for on-demand specifically, across VEVO’s web, mobile, connected and syndication platforms.
CMT.com has launched a new online series, titled Concrete Country, which will place a spotlight on independent alt-rock and roots singer/songwriters performing their original songs on a downtown sidewalk in Nashville, TN. The network is also prepping the launch of CMT EDGE, a new blog dedicated to music discovery, highlighting roots musicians. Curated by CMT.com writer/producer Craig Shelburne, the blog is expected to launch in the summer of 2012.
Adelphic Mobile has launched its Predictive Data Platform (PDP) for the mobile ad marketplace. The PDP features a predictive targeting technology called AudienceCube, which the company says systematically identifies, integrates and processes all types of data to provide a full picture of audiences in real time, which can then be used to better target and engage mobile audiences. Adelphic has also secured $2 million in seed funding from Matrix Partners and will direct it toward expanding the mobile ad platform. Antonio Rodriguez, general partner, Matrix Partners, will join Adelphic’s Board of Directors. The start-up was founded by Jennifer Lum and Changfeng Wang, two former executives at Quattro Wireless, the mobile ad network which later became Apple’s iAd program.
Bizo has launched BizIndex, a new service that allows web publishers to understand what types of professionals visit their sites. Segments covered by the platform include industry, functional area and company size. The BizIndex scores a website’s ability to reach different types of professionals against the “average site” on Bizo’s network. Bizo grabs summarized, anonymous data from every site using the company’s Audience Analytics product (1,500+ as of now).
Aereo is not going down without a fight. The Barry Diller-backed start-up, which wants to launch a monthly subscription service that allows consumers in the New York City area to watch, record and store live broadcast television over the internet via individual antennas in a large storage facility, has decided to file a countersuit against the broadcast networks who are suing Aereo for copyright infringement. In its lawsuit, Aereo claims that it is offering a service that allows users to do what they are already legally entitled to do. Filed in a U.S. District Court in New York City, the countersuit covers only one of the two lawsuits originally filed against the start-up. The other “will happen in due course,” said an Aereo spokesman to Reuters. Set to launch today (barring an injunction), the service comes with an initial free 30-day trial, followed by a monthly subscription plan of $12. At SXSW earlier this week, Barry Diller said he expects to expand Aereo to between 75 and 100 cities within a year.
LiveU, a company which provides portable video-over-cellular solutions that allow for the transmission of live video from any location, has signed a long-term deal with Sinclair Broadcasting Group to power electronic newsgathering operations at more than 20 of Sinclair’s television stations in the U.S. Per the deal, LiveU has already deployed more than 20 of its flagship LU60 ENG backpacks. The LU60 product is a bonded 3G/4G LTE backpack with proprietary RF technology for superior resiliency, up to 1080 HD video and sub-second latency for a satellite-like experience.

According to February 2012 data from Catapult Marketing, per eMarketer, 39% of U.S. shoppers have used or are interested in using Siri to look for coupons or deals; 35% to compare prices at the shelf; and 29% to check inventory at another store. The top retail categories among U.S. shoppers are food and groceries (44% who have used or are interested in using Siri for this category); electronics (39%); and clothing/apparel and home appliances (both at 33%). The number of people who are not interested in using Siri for shopping purposes stands at around 30%. Complemented by the ongoing rise in smartphone ownership and usage, retailers should expect more consumers to employ their mobile phones for comparison shopping both in and out of stores, says eMarketer. It predicts 68.6 million Americans will use a smartphone to conduct mobile research and browsing activities in 2012.
Movies with Friends is a new Facebook Timeline app from Fandango. In an effort to make movie-going “more social than ever,” Fandango says the app will allow users to share movie-based activities and recommendations on their Timeline and News Feed, and will get to see their friends’ movie picks via an activity bar on Fandango’s website. The app will also enable users to share their movie-going plans and invite others to join them. Other features available through the app include information on movie trailers, clips and celebrity interviews watched by a user or his/her friends, as well as articles read on Fandango’s Freshly Popped blog.

Kevin Krim has been appointed by CNBC to be its new Digital GM. At his new position, Krim will lead the development and execution of a cohesive digital strategy to grow CNBC’s digital business. He will report directly to Mark Hoffman, President, CNBC. As part of the hire, CNBC Digital’s existing organization will be restructured. TourWrist, the maker of a mobile and desktop-based virtual platform for capturing, sharing and viewing 360-degree panoramic photos, has announced that Dan Smigrod will come on board at the company as TourWrist’s new SVP and CMO. His responsibilities will include building third-party media, entertainment and technology alliances, as well as the use of traditional and social media to grow TourWrist revenue, membership and usage. Imani Greene has joined social media marketing agency New Media Strategies as VP/Media. In announcing her appointment, New Media Strategies’ GM Jack Macleod said, “Imani’s knowledge and experience will enable highly innovative strategies that build, sustain and optimize online community engagement, and deliver more holistic integrated solutions for our clients.”
Through a marketing campaign that makes almost too much sense: Guinness wants to celebrate this week’s St. Patrick’s Day by attempting to set a Guinness World Record for “The Largest St. Patrick’s Day Celebration.” If you enjoy the drink, and the holiday, you can partake in this effort by making an online pledge via Guinness’ website or Facebook page to enjoy a pint of Guinness during the holiday. In order to successfully set the record, Guinness World Record adjudicators will be stationed at official Guinness events around the globe to count the number of people who are celebrating the holiday, while also verifying the online pledges to assess if the celebration has achieved the record of “The Largest St. Patrick’s Day Celebration” ever (and the not-as-cool title of “Most Pledges Received for a Campaign”). As they say in the commercials, enjoy responsibly everyone.
